Thank You, Madrid: A Second Home in Difficult Times
Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands recently unveiled a commemorative plaque at the Plaza de Oriente in Madrid, dedicating a serene tulip garden to the Spanish capital and its peopleâa deeply personal gesture of gratitude.
Princess Catherine Amalia
âMadrid is my second home,â Amalia shared. âEspecially in a particularly difficult time for me.â
Her words reflect a heartfelt appreciation for the city that embraced her during a challenging chapter of her life. Forced by security concerns to temporarily relocate from the Netherlands, Princess Amalia was able to continue her studies at the University of Amsterdam from Madridâa gesture made possible by the generosity and solidarity of the Spanish people.
Symbolism in Bloom: A Garden of Unity
The tulip garden, adorned with a flower that stands as a national emblem of the Netherlands, is more than a giftâit’s a symbol of unity, resilience, and shared humanity. It quietly embodies the Dutch philosophy of âReverence for Lifeâ, a principle that honours all existence with dignity and compassion.
As Princess Amalia herself expresses, âVisiting Spain is always like receiving a warm hugânot only for us, but also for our eldest daughter, the Princess of Orange.â
Her act resonates deeply with the Buddhist principle of the Bodhisattvaâone who carries the joys and burdens of others as their own. By embracing this spirit of solidarity, Amalia reflects a royal compassion that transcends borders.
Princess Amaliaâs gesture aligns with the spiritual principle of the Bodhisattva in Buddhismâone who seeks to understand and share in the lives of others, carrying their joys and burdens as if they were their own.
By offering this garden, the Princess is not simply making a diplomatic gesture; she is embodying a deeper message: that when we honour life in its many forms, when we extend empathy beyond our borders, we diminish the need for arrogance, conflict, or division.
Imagine a worldâimagine a Europeâwhere such reverence shapes our actions. How much more peaceful, joyful, and unified could our lives be?
Princess Amaliaâs quiet act in Madrid reminds us that leadership is not always about grand speeches or sweeping reforms. Sometimes, it is found in a garden of tulips, blooming softly in a foreign city, whispering hope, healing, and the simple truth that life, in all its forms, is sacred.

Overview: “Reverence for Life”
A Reflection on Princess Catharina-Amaliaâs Humanism, Compassion, and Global Relevance
In this special Royal Insight edition of Assumpta Weekly Magazine, we present âReverence for Lifeââa moving feature on Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange, whose symbolic tulip garden gift to Madrid speaks volumes beyond royal diplomacy.

At the heart of this gesture lies a worldview grounded in what may be called Dutch Humanismâa faith in the inherent dignity of all people, and a belief that even in times of adversity, individual lives carry transformative potential. Her words, “Thank you, Madrid. Especially in a particularly difficult time for me,” characterise a philosophical stance rooted in deep empathy and shared humanity.
This view harmonises profoundly with the Lotus Sutraâs message and Nichiren Buddhismâs central tenet: that all people are inherently Buddhas. Princess Amaliaâs reverence for human dignity and her expression of gratitude reflect a universal compassion that transcends religion, culture, and nationality.
Her action is more than symbolicâit embodies a life-sized paradigm of leadership. In a world overwhelmed by impersonal forces and global crises, her humane approach to leadership insists on reconnecting with the real lives of real people. It is a call to refocus global decision-making on the interconnectedness of all life, where individual transformation becomes the seed for global peace.

“A World in Bloom: Grace in Uncertain Timesâ
As we mark the close of this yearâs Easter season on April 21st, we pause to reflect on the extraordinary grace found in everyday acts of service. Across nations and cultures, people have answered the call to care for others with selflessness, resilience, and quiet courage.
In this spirit, we bring you âReverence for Lifeââa deeply moving feature that invites us into the thoughts of Princess Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange, in an exclusive dialogue with our own Cookieteegh, the young royal shares her perspective on compassion, leadership, and the sacred bonds between peopleâbonds that transcend borders.
From Madridâs tulip garden to the philosophies of Dutch Humanism and Buddhist compassion, this edition is a tribute to those who honour life with dignity and devotion.
May these pages offer inspiration, and may each story remind us of the light we carry together.
With reverence,
Assumpta.
In the tulip garden, where soft sunlight now casts longer shadows. A nearby fountain murmurs gently. The conversation deepens, warm with understanding.

Cookieteegh:
Your Highness, may I sayâyou carry not only your title with grace, but also a kind of visual language that speaks before any words are said. Today, for instance, your choice of dressâthe rich ikat print, the deep burgundy huesâit all seems to whisper stories of heritage, strength, and rootedness.
Is fashion, to you, more than just personal expression? Do you see it as a way of communicating something deeper?

Princess Amalia:
Absolutely. Fashion, for me, is a quiet kind of diplomacy. When I choose what to wearâespecially during public appearancesâI think about what it says beyond appearance: Does it honour the moment? Does it reflect my identity and my values?
This particular dress by Saloni, for example, carries the ikat print, which speaks to a centuries-old textile tradition shared across continentsâfrom Southeast Asia to Central Europe. Itâs a reminder that we are connected through threads, through craft, through care.
And burgundy? Itâs a colour of warmth, of courage. I wanted something that reflected the gravity of memory, but also the joy of being here in Madrid, in a place that gave me light when I needed it most.

Cookieteegh:
Itâs a kind of storytelling through fabric, then. Not unlike this garden, both are composed, symbolic, and intentional.
And that leads me to something else I must ask: Youâre part of a generation often described as âthe changemakersââyoung people who are rethinking leadership, inclusivity, and global justice. How do you see your role, not just as a royal, but as a young leader in a rapidly shifting world?

Princess Amalia:
I often reflect on what it means to grow into a role shaped by tradition while living in a time that demands transformation.
I see my generation as inheritors, yesâbut also as architects. Weâre building something new on foundations laid by those before us. For me, that means listening more than speaking, learning from communities I engage with, and never losing sight of the humanity behind every policy, every protocol.
Whether itâs climate, mental health, or education, I ask: How are real people affected? And how can we respond with dignity?

Cookieteegh:
That spiritâof compassionate architecture, if I may call it that, feels like a powerful philosophy. One that aligns not just with Dutch values of equality and openness, but also with broader spiritual traditions that see leadership not as dominion, but as service.

Princess Amalia:
Thatâs beautifully said, Cookieteegh. My mother often reminds me: âTrue leadership begins when you understand that you are here for others.â And I hold that close.

Cookieteegh:
And may your words echo across generations, reminding us that leadership is not born of status, but of spirit. Of presence. Of reverence.
Before we part, is there one message youâd like to leave with readers across the world, especially young people finding their way?

Princess Amalia:
Yesâdonât wait to be perfect before you begin. Let kindness be your compass, curiosity your fuel, and courage your signature.
And remember: Even in uncertainty, the smallest gestureâa tulip planted, a stranger helpedâcan carry light. Reverence for life begins with how we live today.
[They rise together, standing beneath the open sky. The garden blooms behind themânot as decoration, but as testimony. To hope. To memory. To the sacredness of being alive together.]

âReverence for Lifeâ
A Royal Perspective on Compassion and Connection. A Dialogue Between Cookieteegh & Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange
[Scene: The serene tulip garden at Plaza de Oriente, Madrid. Spring sunlight bathes the flowers in gold. A quiet breeze stirs. Cookieteegh approaches the Princess, dressed in her signature ikat-print dress, exuding grace and calm dignity.]

Cookieteegh:
Your Royal Highness, Princess Catharina-Amalia,
With the deepest reverence, I thank you for welcoming me into this space of reflection, both literal and symbolic. It is an immense honour to share in this dialogue with you today, surrounded by the bloom of unity and the quiet testimony of resilience this garden offers.

Princess Amalia:
Thank you, Cookieteegh. Itâs a privilege to be here with youâand to have this moment to speak heart to heart, soul to soul. This garden, like this conversation, is rooted in gratitude. Iâm honoured to share it with you.

Cookieteegh:
This Monday, 21st April, marks the closing of this yearâs Easter seasonâa time that continues to astonish me, year after year. Not only for its spiritual significance, but for the sheer humanity it evokes.
Across the globe, weâve seen people take up the quiet privilege of serving one another, not from compulsion, but from compassion. It moves me each Easter to witness that, even in uncertain timesâeconomically, socially, and emotionallyâso many still rise to care. Their selflessness, steadfastness, and warm hearts shine like lights against a troubled horizon.
How do you, Your Highness, reflect on such acts of shared humanity during seasons like these?

Princess Amalia:
That is beautifully said, Cookieteegh. And I feel it deeply too. Thereâs something extraordinary about how people come together during these sacred timesânot for recognition, but out of love, responsibility, and reverence for life itself.
During my own time in Madrid, particularly at a moment in my life that was shadowed by personal difficulty, I witnessed this very spirit in the everyday kindness of strangers. Spain welcomed me not as a royal, but as a person in need of refuge. The warmth of that embrace reminded me that compassion is the most dignified form of power we possess.

Cookieteegh:
And in that embrace, you offered something backâa living symbol in this tulip garden. A gift not only of beauty, but of meaning. Itâs more than a tribute to a cityâitâs a quiet declaration of unity, isnât it?

Princess Amalia:
Yes, that was my intention. The tulip, though small, carries stories of resilience, migration, and shared heritage. In offering this garden, I hoped to create a space where people could feel held by nature, by memory, by shared humanity.
This gesture was personal, but it also speaks to something bigger: a vision where compassion guides our decisions, and where reverence for lifeâevery lifeâbecomes our shared compass.

Cookieteegh:
That resonates profoundly. In many spiritual traditions, from the Bodhisattva path in Buddhism to the tenets of Dutch Humanism, we see the same call: to carry the burdens of others as if they were our own, to stand with them in joy and sorrow.
Your Highness, youâve been described as a âbeacon of youthful compassion.â But what gives you the courage to lead with tenderness in a world that often values strength only in hardness?

Princess Amalia:
Thank you for those generous words. I think true strength lies in the willingness to remain open, especially when it would be easier to close off. Leading with tenderness doesnât mean lacking resolve. It means acknowledging our shared vulnerability, and from that, building a truer kind of powerâone grounded in empathy and respect.
This garden, these conversations, and the choices we make in private and publicâeach is a chance to honour that philosophy. Thatâs the leadership I hope to live into: not just as a Princess, but as a human being.

Cookieteegh:
And may we all aspire to such leadership, whether in palace halls or community streets. As we conclude today, one question lingers in my heart: What message do you hope this gardenâand this momentâwill leave with those who encounter it?

Princess Amalia:
That life, in all its complexity, is sacred. That even in our darkest hours, connection is possible. And that when we act with reverenceâfor the earth, for each otherâwe plant seeds of peace that may bloom far beyond our sight.
The two stand in silence, letting the wind carry the words into the rustling tulip petals. Hope, humility, and harmony remain, gently blooming.
