ASSUMPTA:
The earth, from my perspective, is nothing short of a magnificent miracle. It is pulsating with vibrant and living phenomena, showcasing the preciousness and wonder of life itself. This realisation has driven me from the early days of my professional career as the principal of Babies and Toddlers Daycare, to encourage fellow Namibians, especially young children, to develop an awareness of and deep appreciation for our planet and the life that thrives within it.

Within this context, we are faced with what Makiguchi referred to as the ultimate question. This question invites us to reflect on the fundamental purpose and meaning of our existence and our connection to the world around us. It compels us to explore how we can live in harmony with the earth, recognizing our responsibility as custodians of this incredible gift.
By instilling this consciousness and appreciation for the earth in young children, we lay the foundation for a sustainable and compassionate future. We empower them to become active participants in preserving the environment, fostering a sense of stewardship, and nurturing a deep respect for all forms of life.

Embracing the earth as a miracle and recognizing the interconnectedness of all living things can guide our actions and decision-making. It prompts us to prioritise environmental sustainability, advocate for social justice, and work towards a world where all individuals, regardless of age or background, have the opportunity to thrive and contribute positively to the well-being of our planet.
In essence, the ultimate question that Makiguchi presents confronts us with the profound task of living in harmony with the earth and embracing the miracle of life. It calls upon us to cultivate a deep reverence for nature, inspire future generations, and work towards a more compassionate and sustainable world for all.

WEEKERS:
I was born here on earth; lived on earth; inspired by the earth; The earth is my home. how can we observe, and make contact with, our surroundings?
ASSUMPTA:

In our interactions with our environment, we should regard people, animals, trees, rivers, rocks, or stones in the same light as ourselves and realising that we have much in common with all of them.

WEEKERS:
Will this kind of interaction prompt us to feel or consciously think, “If I were in their or its place, what would I feel or do?”

ASSUMPTA:
Sympathetic interactions occur when you perceive or feel another person or object you are in contact with as a part of yourself or as belonging to your own kind.

WEEKERS:
In a small town, there lived a teacher named Mr. Thompson. From a young age, Mr. Thompson had always felt a deep reverence for nature and a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things. His heart swelled with wonder at the beauty of the natural world and the intricate web of life that sustained it.
As Mr. Thompson began his teaching career, he quickly realized that he wanted to share this sense of wonder and reverence with his students and fellow human beings. He longed to inspire in them a deep appreciation for the natural and social environments that surrounded them.
In his classroom, Mr. Thompson created a joyful and engaging learning environment. He infused his lessons with stories of nature’s awe-inspiring wonders, captivating his students’ imaginations and igniting their curiosity. He encouraged them to explore the world around them, to notice the delicate intricacies of a butterfly’s wings or the whispered secrets hidden in a blooming flower.

Beyond the walls of the classroom, Mr. Thompson organized field trips to nearby parks and nature reserves. He led his students through towering forests, bustling with life, and taught them to listen to the gentle whispers of the wind and the rhythm of the earth beneath their feet. He showed them the beauty in every creature they encountered, urging them to tread lightly and respect their natural habitats.

Mr. Thompson also sought to foster in his students a deep sense of connection to their social environment. He encouraged them to understand and appreciate the diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences of their classmates. He organized community projects, where his students collaborated with people of different backgrounds, transforming them into agents of positive change.
Word of Mr. Thompson’s teaching style and passion spread throughout the town. Parents, community members, and even fellow teachers were inspired by his ability to instil a profound sense of wonder and interconnectedness in the hearts of his students.
With his gentle words and infectious enthusiasm, Mr. Thompson reminded everyone around him of the preciousness of life and the beauty that surrounded them. Each day, he strove to communicate the importance of nurturing both the natural and social environments, for they were intertwined in creating a harmonious existence for all.
Years later, as Mr. Thompson reflected on his teaching journey, he saw the impact he had made. His students had grown into compassionate individuals, deeply connected to the world they inhabited. They, in turn, had inspired others to cherish and protect the wonders of nature and the rich tapestry of humanity.

ASSUMPTA:
It’s clear the teacher believed strongly in the concept of humans being closely connected to and interdependent with the natural world, viewing this connection as essential to understanding human identity and the purpose of our existence.

WEEKERS :
Indeed. The teacher’s perspective on the interconnectedness between humans and the natural world is thought-provoking and underscores the importance of recognizing our relationship with the environment

ASSUMPTA:
“How can children appreciate and navigate life’s interconnectedness in our complex world marked by war and corruption?”

WEEKERS:
Helping children appreciate life’s interconnectedness involves fostering empathy, teaching about diverse perspectives, and emphasising the impact of individual actions on the broader world. Encourage critical thinking, promote kindness, and provide opportunities for them to engage in activities that highlight cooperation and global awareness. Open conversations about current events, emphasising positive examples, can also contribute to their understanding of the complex world around them.
