Introduction

Assumpta-Gahutu
Many who hear my name Assumpta-Gahutu envision a figure of serene beauty, someone who effortlessly embodies tranquillity and contentment. The image of a person basking in a peaceful setting, smiling with a knowing mission, is what most people imagine. However, beneath this serene exterior lies a deeper, more complex reality.

From an early age, my parents have been my pillars of strength, guiding me to maintain my composure and find inner peace. Their teachings went beyond simply cultivating a tranquil mindset. They instilled in me the understanding that true ambition requires an unyielding spirit and the courage to face a relentless series of challenges.
My journey has been shaped by this profound lesson: ambition is not a pursuit limited to serene moments. It is a continuous, rigorous struggle that demands overcoming both internal doubts and external obstacles. Success, they taught me, is not merely about reaching goals but about the relentless pursuit of self-improvement and resilience in the face of adversity.

Assumpta-Gahutu
As I navigate the path of ambition, I have learned to balance the tranquillity within me with the dynamic energy required to overcome life’s hurdles. This duality embracing serenity while confronting struggle defines my approach to leadership and personal growth.
Through their wisdom, I understand that the path to ambition is not paved solely with peaceful moments but also with the strength to face and conquer the challenges that come my way. This perspective allows me to embrace my ambitions fully, knowing that each struggle and triumph contributes to my growth and fulfilment.”
The Obvious Truth of Assumpta-Gahutu’s Leadership

Tsasi: Good morning, Assumpta. I hope you’re doing well today.

Assumpta: Good morning, Tsasi. Yes, I’m doing well. Thank you for asking. How about you?

Tsasi: I’m doing well, too. I was thinking about your leadership perspective, and it made me note that your basic human emotions such as fear, doubt, passion, lust, and anxiety are always kept in the black bag.

Assumpta: That’s an interesting observation, Tsasi. It’s true that in our roles, we often have to manage and contain those emotions to effectively lead. Finally, your observation of the “Black Bag” is so precise with what Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism categorises this seemingly infinite range of life states into ten inner “worlds.” This concept of the “Ten Worlds” offers a useful framework for understanding both the changeable nature of our moods and the basic nature or tendencies of our character. More significantly, it provides us with a sense of the great possibility inherent in life at each moment.

Tsasi: Can you elaborate on these Ten Worlds?

Assumpta: The principle of the Ten Worlds forms the foundation of the Buddhist view of life. The worlds are, in ascending order of the degree of free will, compassion, and happiness one feels: (1) hell, (2) hungry spirits, (3) animals, (4) asuras, (5) human beings, (6) heavenly beings, (7) voice-hearers, (8) cause-awakened ones, (9) bodhisattvas, and (10) Buddhas. It fascinating. It really aligns with how we navigate our emotions and states of being. Exactly. The same is true with my black bag, where I put my emotions, fear, hunger, and other basic instincts. It helps me manage them so that I can lead effectively.

Tsasi: Are you sure and certain that you wanted to lead in this competitive role, and you have thought through the implications?

Assumpta:
One of the first questions I ask myself as an aspiring leader is, “Who do I seek to lead and why?” Perhaps a leader of a small daycare, and this is how it all started. Becoming a leader, while it offers evident rewards, also means becoming deeply involved in the lives of those whose work and efforts fall under my authority. One of my best friends, a teacher, once told me, “You try taking young children and nurturing them to become Namibia’s valuable citizens who will one day lead the country, with all their problems and issues.”

Tsasi: Are you ready to do this in conditions of normalcy, not under warfare or hatred?

Assumpta: As the principal in charge of Babies and Todds Daycare, alongside my dedicated teachers who understands me well, I navigate the responsibilities of leadership every day with them.
It’s true. We are also leaders who are constantly being approached by the parents of the children and, many times, by the children themselves with their problems and questions. And these questions are often not just simple inquiries but dilemmas that require thoughtful solutions, aiming for resolutions that won’t need to be revisited.

Tsasi: It’s a challenging role, but one that is incredibly rewarding. Seeing the children grow and knowing that we are contributing to their future is worth all the effort.

Assumpta: Indeed, Tsasi. Leadership here means more than managing, it means shaping lives and nurturing the next generation of leaders. This journey is not just about ambition but also about balancing achievement with morality, ensuring that we guide these young minds with integrity and compassion. Examining the characteristics of genuine leadership during this tumultuous time for change, the fate of every nation and organization depends upon the wisdom of its leaders.”
In terms of content, the hallmark of genuine leaders is that they work harder than others and impart courage to everyone.

Tsasi : Thank you for Assumpta for emphasizing the importance of a leadership revolution for the Babies and Toddlers. “Fresh development and a bright future for the Daycare hinge on the teachers who are leaders themselves continuing to grow, breaking through their limitations, and applying themselves with a completely new attitude and commitment. It is crucial for leaders to guard against growing careless or arrogantly complacent.

Assumpta : The objective of the Babies and Toddlers is to bring about a positive change in society, ushering in “a new era.” Therefore, its teachers are first and foremost serious about developing their own lives, nurturing strength, and wisdom.

Tsasi : Indeed, the acknowledgment of teachers and mentors is crucial in any journey of learning and growth. Their guidance and wisdom shape our understanding and ability to practice what we’ve learned. As Nichiren emphasizes in his “Letter to Misawa,” it is essential to practice correctly and be aware of the influences that can lead us astray, even when we possess wisdom.

They should aim to strengthen the bonds within the community, ensuring that everyone feels valued and supported. This sense of mission, shared by both teachers and leaders, creates a foundation for a cohesive and thriving group, whether it involves Babies and Toddlers or any other area of life. By recognizing and honoring the contributions of all involved, we cultivate an environment where everyone can flourish.
