This is a great cultural and fashion analysis from Serwaa Amihere’s perspective. It highlights the deep-rooted values that influence Ghanaian women’s dressing styles.
Why Do Ghanaian Women Dress Conservatively?
Serwaa Amihere Explains the Cultural & Fashion Influence
As a journalist and fashion enthusiast, Serwaa Amihere shares her insights on why many Ghanaian women embrace conservative dressing and how this tradition continues to shape modern fashion choices.
“I was born and raised in Ghana, and I’ve always seen conservative female dressing as an expression of our cultural and social values. Modesty and respectability are highly regarded in Ghanaian society, and these principles influence how many women choose to dress.”
Cultural & Social Influences on Ghanaian Women’s Dressing
1️⃣ Cultural Norms & Tradition
Ghana has a long-standing tradition of valuing modesty in personal presentation. Traditional attire, such as the Kaba and slit (a tailored blouse with a long wrap skirt), made from vibrant African prints like Kente, Ankara, or Batakari, reflects a deep cultural appreciation for elegance and respectability.
2️⃣ Social Expectations & Professionalism
Women in Ghana are often encouraged to dress modestly, especially in professional and formal settings. Clothing choices are influenced by societal expectations that emphasize grace, dignity, and subtle elegance over revealing styles.
3️⃣ Fashion Trends & Local Brands
While global fashion influences are present, Ghanaian fashion trends largely favour modesty. Brands like Office&Co by SA have gained popularity by promoting sophisticated and conservative looks that resonate with women both in Ghana and internationally.
4️⃣ Weather Considerations
Despite Ghana’s warm climate, many women opt for lightweight yet full-coverage fabrics to stay cool while maintaining cultural decorum. Office&Co by SA exemplifies this balance by designing breathable, elegant corporate wear.
5️⃣ Dress Codes in Schools & Workplaces
Many institutions in Ghana have strict dress codes that require conservative attire. This reinforces modest dressing as a norm beyond the workplace, influencing everyday fashion choices.
6️⃣ Respect for Tradition & Generational Influence
Elders and traditional leaders encourage modest dressing as a sign of respect. These values are passed down through generations, shaping the fashion choices of modern Ghanaian women.
Footwear & Accessories in Conservative Ghanaian Fashion
✅ Closed or Modest Shoes – Sandals, flats, low heels, and classic high heels are common.
✅ Minimal Jewelry & Makeup – Light, understated accessories and natural makeup complement a polished look.
✅ Respectable Hairstyles – Extravagant styles are rare; many opt for elegant, neatly styled hair.
Preserving Ghanaian Fashion Heritage
“As a journalist and fashionista, I see it as my duty to honour and transmit our cultural traditions to the next generation—both in Ghana and abroad. Modesty is not just about dressing; it’s about identity, confidence, and the pride of being Ghanaian.” – Serwaa Amihere.

Join us in this exclusive conversation between me Cookieteegh and you Serwaa-Amihere, where we discuss fashion as a universal language, the evolving role of Ghanaian women in the professional space, and the beauty of cultural heritage in modern fashion.
We invite you to immerse yourself in this inspiring dialogue, as we celebrate the richness of Ghanaian identity, empowerment, and global influence.
Cookieteegh:
Serwaa, you’ve built a reputation as one of Ghana’s most influential journalists. How do you see journalism as a tool for connecting Ghana to the world?
Serwaa Amihere:
Journalism is all about storytelling, and stories have the power to bridge cultures. Through my work, I highlight Ghana’s progress, challenges, and triumphs, ensuring our voices are heard globally. Whether it’s politics, business, or fashion, journalism makes Ghana visible on the world stage.
Cookieteegh:
Fashion is also a powerful storytelling tool. How do you think Ghanaian fashion, particularly from brands like Office&Co by SA, plays a role in global connections?
Serwaa Amihere:
Fashion is a universal language. It tells the world who we are, where we come from, and where we’re going. Office&Co by SA is a perfect example—it takes Ghanaian craftsmanship and transforms it into corporate fashion that resonates worldwide. Their designs reflect elegance, confidence and sophistication, making every woman feel powerful,no matter where she is.
Why Do Ghanaian Women Dress Conservatively?
Cookieteegh: Ghanaian women are often known for dressing conservatively. Can you share some insights into this cultural influence?
Serwaa Amihere:
Absolutely. I grew up seeing the modest, elegant dress as a reflection of our values—respect, dignity, and self-respect. The kaba and slit, made from traditional prints like Kente, Ankara, or Batakari, represent more than just clothing; it’s an identity. We remain deeply rooted in our heritage even as we embrace modern styles.
Cookieteegh: What are some main influences shaping Ghanaian women’s fashion choices?
Serwaa Amihere: There are several key factors:
1️⃣ Cultural Norms & Tradition – Ghana has a long-standing tradition of valuing modesty in personal presentation. Traditional attire reflects elegance and respectability.
2️⃣ Social Expectations & Professionalism – Women in Ghana are often encouraged to dress modestly, especially in professional and formal settings. Grace, dignity, and subtle elegance are favoured over revealing styles.
3️⃣ Fashion Trends & Local Brands – While global influences exist, Ghanaian fashion trends largely favour modesty. Office&Co by SA has gained popularity by promoting sophisticated, conservative looks that resonate with women both in Ghana and internationally.
4️⃣ Weather Considerations – Despite Ghana’s warm climate, many women choose lightweight yet full-coverage fabrics to stay cool while maintaining cultural decorum. Office&Co by SA exemplifies this balance by designing breathable, elegant corporate wear.
5️⃣ Dress Codes in Schools & Workplaces – Many institutions in Ghana have strict dress codes that require conservative attire, reinforcing modest dressing beyond the workplace.

Serwaa Amihere:
They do it beautifully by merging Ghanaian craftsmanship with modern professional wear. Their designs aren’t just clothes; they’re statements of ambition. Women who wear Office&Co by SA feel powerful, confident, and connected to their roots and the global corporate world.
Cookieteegh:
What advice would you give young Ghanaian women looking to embrace tradition and modern professional elegance?
Serwaa Amihere:

Office&Co by SA understands this balance—they create timeless pieces that allow women to own their presence in any professional setting while celebrating their Ghanaian identity.
