“I firmly believe that every young person has the power within him or her to change the world.”
HER EXCLUSIVE MESSAGE
The “treasure” we wear unknowingly is our inner worth, hidden gifts, and unique combination of talents, strengths, and dreams. This includes qualities that cannot be stolen or taken away, and such as your unique perspective, your capacity for resilience, and your potential for growth and making a difference in the world.
The full story, known as the Parable of the Jewel Hidden in the Robe (Eriju-no-tatoe), is one of the most famous parables told by Shakyamuni Buddha in the Lotus Sutra (specifically Chapter Eight). Here is the story as traditionally recounted:
The Parable of the Jewel Hidden in the Robe:

Once upon a time, there was a man who lived a life of poverty and extreme hardship. He struggled daily, constantly seeking food and clothing just to survive.
This poor man had an old friend, who was now a very wealthy and generous public servant.
One day, the poor man visited his rich friend’s home. The friend welcomed him warmly, offering a magnificent meal with choice food and fine wine. The two spent the evening in joyful companionship, laughing and drinking until the poor man became completely intoxicated and fell fast asleep right there.
The Gift is Given
The rich friend, however, suddenly had an urgent matter of public business that required him to leave immediately for a distant place. He was greatly concerned for his friend’s future comfort but didn’t want to wake him.
As an act of immense generosity, the rich friend took a priceless, wish-granting jewel—a gem valuable enough to fulfill any of his friend’s desires—and carefully sewed it into the lining of the poor man’s robe. He left without saying a word about the gift.
Years of Ignorance
When the poor man awoke, he was completely unaware of the extraordinary treasure hidden in his coat. He found his friend gone, and so he left, continuing his wandering life.
For many long years, he traveled through foreign lands, enduring tremendous difficulties and hardships. He continued to toil relentlessly, barely managing to secure meager amounts of food and clothing, yet he was joyful and satisfied with these small, fleeting gains. He never knew he carried an immense fortune with him all along.
The Revelation
One day, years later, the poor man finally encountered his old, rich friend again. The wealthy man was shocked and saddened to see his friend in such a desolate and poverty-stricken condition.
The rich friend cried out to him:
“My dear friend, why do you live in such hardship for mere food and clothing? In the past, I wanted to ensure you would be able to live in comfort and ease. Before I departed, I took a priceless jewel, valuable enough to satisfy your every desire, and sewed it into the lining of your robe! It must still be there, and yet you have sought to live a life of poverty and struggle!”
The poor man was astounded. He finally examined the lining of his old, worn robe and, to his disbelief and overwhelming joy, found the magnificent jewel that had been hidden there all this time!
The Moral of the Story
The Buddha tells this parable to illustrate that every single person (the Poor Man) already possesses the ultimate, priceless treasure—the Jewel—which represents their inherent Buddha Nature or their vast, limitless potential for enlightenment. The Rich Friend is the Buddha, who placed this treasure within us, but we often forget or are unaware of it.
We chase after small, temporary pleasures (the meager food and clothing) and endure unnecessary suffering because we are ignorant of the unlimited spiritual wealth we carry inside. The purpose of the teaching is to awaken us to this truth so we can stop struggling and utilize the priceless wisdom that is already us.
The full story, known as the Parable of the Jewel Hidden in the Robe (Eriju-no-tatoe), is one of the most famous parables told by Shakyamuni Buddha in the Lotus Sutra (specifically Chapter Eight)
The Hidden Treasure in the Parable
The treasure was a magnificent, priceless jewel (sometimes referred to as a wish-granting gem).
- The Giver: The Generous Friend (the “Rich Man” in the parable).
- The Recipient: The Poor Man (the “Poor Boy” in your question).
- The Action: The friend secretly sewed the jewel into the lining of the poor man’s robe while the poor man was asleep.
- The Significance: This jewel was valuable enough to satisfy all the poor man’s needs and desires, completely ending his poverty.
Spiritual Meaning
In the context of the Lotus Sutra, the Priceless Jewel symbolizes the Buddha Nature or inherent wisdom and potential that lies within every person. The parable teaches that we often live in “spiritual poverty,” unaware of the vast, invaluable resources (the inner treasures) we already possess.
Reasons for the Awareness Gap
The difference in knowledge between the rich friend and the poor man is central to the parable’s teaching:
“Why did the generous friend know about the treasure, and the poor man was unaware of it?”
Focusing on the difference in knowledge
The Generous Friend’s Awareness
The rich friend, who represents the Buddha (or ultimate truth/wisdom), knew about the jewel because:
- He Placed It: He deliberately selected the priceless gem and sewed it into the lining of the poor man’s coat while he slept. It was an intentional act of profound compassion and generosity.
- He Understood Its Value: As a wealthy man, he knew the jewel’s worth was immeasurable and would immediately end his friend’s suffering.
The Poor Man’s Unawareness
The poor man, who represents all sentient beings, was unaware of the treasure because:
- He Was Asleep (Ignorance): He was literally asleep when the gift was given, symbolizing his state of ignorance (often called avidya in Buddhism). He was unaware of the immense potential that was bestowed upon him.
- He Was Focused on Scarcity: He was so consumed by the daily struggle for mere sustenance (food and clothing) that his mind was solely focused on lack and immediate survival. He had no frame of reference to suspect he possessed anything valuable.
- He Never Looked: He never examined his simple, old robe (symbolizing his own nature) for anything beyond its basic function. He was content (or resigned) to his life of hardship and didn’t believe a greater treasure could be his.
The Parable’s Spiritual Lesson
In essence, the parable highlights how we (the poor men) often live in a state of spiritual poverty, constantly struggling for small, temporary gains, while being completely oblivious to the inherent, limitless treasure (Buddha Nature/Inner Wisdom) that has been “sewn into our robes” (our very being) by the enlightened ones (the generous friend/Buddha). We suffer because of our ignorance of our own worth.
What is Buddha Nature or Buddhahood?
That’s a fantastic and crucial question. Buddha Nature and Buddhahood are central concepts in Mahayana Buddhism (the tradition that includes the Lotus Sutra), and they directly explain the meaning of the hidden jewel.
Here is a breakdown of what these terms mean:
Buddha Nature (Tathāgatagarbha / Buddhadhātu)
Buddha Nature (Sanskrit: tathāgatagarbha or buddhadhātu) refers to the inherent potential or pure essence for enlightenment that resides within every single sentient being (humans and animals).
Key Interpretations of Buddha Nature:
- The Seed/Potential (The Poor Man’s Jewel):
- It is the innate, unconditioned purity of the mind, often likened to a seed, embryo, or a hidden treasure (like the jewel).
- It means that becoming a Buddha is not about acquiring something new, but about uncovering or realizing what is already there.
- Luminous Mind:
- It is described as the luminous, true state of the mind which is naturally clear, free, and pure (visuddhi).
- This pure nature is constantly present, but it is obscured by temporary defilements and afflictions (like clouds covering the sun or the muck covering a golden statue).
- The Core of Goodness:
- It signifies that, at their core, all beings possess the fundamental qualities of a Buddha: wisdom, compassion, and boundless love. This core is eternal and unchanging.
The Parable of the Jewel Hidden in the Robe is one of the most famous ways the Buddha taught this idea: the priceless jewel is the Buddha Nature that the poor man (us) possesses but remains unaware of.
Buddhahood (Buddhatā)
Buddhahood refers to the result or the state of having fully realized and manifested one’s Buddha Nature. It is the ultimate goal of the Buddhist path.
Key Characteristics of Buddhahood:
- Complete Awakening (Bodhi): It is a state of perfect, full enlightenment where all ignorance, suffering, and mental afflictions have been completely eradicated.
- Omniscience: The full, unobstructed realization of the true nature of reality (Dharmakaya).
- Nirvana: The permanent cessation of suffering and the cycle of death and rebirth (samsara).
- Perfect Compassion: The complete, boundless ability to act with compassion (Karuna) for all beings, based on a clear understanding of reality.
➡️ In Summary:
| Concept | What It Is | Analogy from the Parable |
| Buddha Nature | The inherent potential for enlightenment that is already present in every being. | The Priceless Jewel 💎 sewn into the lining of the poor man’s coat. |
| Buddhahood | The fully realized state where that potential is completely manifested. | The poor man finally finding and utilizing the jewel, leading to a life of freedom and joy. |
Unlocking Your Inner Treasure: A Guide to Authentic Potential
We are constantly encouraged to “follow our dreams” and “maximize our potential,” but these phrases often lack a clear roadmap. Drawing inspiration from research and the profound wisdom of thinkers like Nichiren Daishonin, we affirm a foundational truth: our greatest treasure lies within us.
We can uncover this treasure by embracing the practice of chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo to foster self-awareness, set goals for growth, and engage in structured activities to understand our deepest aspirations.
1. Step into Self-Awareness: Discovering Your Authentic Self
The first and most critical step in realizing our potential is cultivating self-awareness. In the SGI, this journey involves an honest, deep look at how we interact with others, particularly during home visitations 🏠.
- Courage in Action: Home visits are where your true self is revealed. You must summon your courage and strength to genuinely connect and offer guidance.
- Reflecting on Impact: Pay attention to your values in action and the positive impact you have on the members you visit. This real-world interaction is the crucible where self-knowledge is forged.
- The Power of Feedback: The reflection we do when making a report, and the feedback received, serves as a crucial self-assessment tool. This structured process helps reveal your authentic talents and leadership style.
2. Cultivating Trust and Investment
By consistently using the framework of home visit activities and self-assessment:
- Trust Emerges: You begin to build deep trust—first in yourself and your abilities, then in your fellow members, and finally in the guidance of your senior leaders who engage you in this vital role.
- Identifying Your Power: This process clarifies your authentic self and reveals your unique talents and aspirations.
- Investment in Potential: Once this inner power is recognized, you naturally want to invest in yourself (developing your talents) and, crucially, in others, inspiring them to recognize the same potential within themselves.
3. The Result: Inclusive Leadership
When you recognize and utilize the limitless power within you, your capacity for leadership fundamentally changes. You become a leader whose actions are guided by inherent wisdom and compassion, ensuring you can’t discriminate 🤝. Your leadership is rooted in the conviction that all people possess the same priceless jewel of Buddha Nature.
Here are goal-setting approaches, framed within the SGI practice, designed to help you manifest the immense potential of the “jewel” within.
Goal Setting to Manifest Inner Treasure
To move from simply possessing Buddha Nature to actively using the wisdom and power of Buddhahood, you need goals that are both expansive (like the jewel’s worth) and focused (like the practice itself).
1. The Power of “Gohonzon-Centric” Goals
When setting goals, the focus shifts from merely accumulating external results to developing your inner life-state through practice.
| Type of Goal | Focus | How It Manifests the Jewel |
| Growth Goal | Challenging Your Weaknesses. Set a goal to conquer a specific limitation, fear, or negative tendency (e.g., procrastination, cynicism, short temper). | This purifies the mind (cleans the jewel), allowing your inherent wisdom to shine without obstruction. |
| Contribution Goal | Expanding Your Capacity for Action. Set a goal related to sharing Buddhism or supporting the SGI community (e.g., consistent home visits, successful discussion meetings). | This confirms the jewel’s power, proving that chanting and action lead to concrete positive results and stronger life-force. |
| Human Revolution Goal | Transforming Your Destiny. Set a long-term goal for a major life improvement (e.g., establishing financial stability, deeply healing a relationship). | This utilizes the jewel’s wealth to elevate your core life condition and destiny, reflecting Nichiren Daishonin’s teaching that “Earthly desires are enlightenment.” |
S.M.A.R.T. Goals with a Spiritual Anchor
The widely used S.M.A.R.T. framework becomes incredibly effective when each step is tied back to the power of the Gohonzon and your inherent Buddha Nature.
- Specific: Clearly define the desired outcome (e.g., Not “I want to be happy,” but “I will chant for 90 minutes daily to summon the wisdom needed to start my business project”).
- Measurable: Define clear metrics. How will you know the jewel has shone? (e.g., “I will successfully complete four home visits this month, recording the lessons I learn from each conversation.”)
- Achievable (and Awakening): The goal should be difficult enough to require tapping into your Buddha Nature (courage and wisdom). It shouldn’t be easy, it should force you to expand your life.
- Relevant (to Revelation): Ensure the goal aligns with your ultimate purpose—your human revolution—and helps you reveal your inner life condition, rather than just chasing fleeting desires.
- Time-bound (and Transformative): Set a deadline and commit to the transformative struggle required to meet it. The process is the goal.
3. Ikeda’s Guidance: Focus on the Vow
President Daisaku Ikeda often guides members to set goals rooted in Vow—a commitment to contribute to kosen-rufu (world peace through individual happiness).
”The true measure of a goal is whether it prompts you to deepen your resolve and chant with a renewed spirit.”
Instead of focusing only on the outcome, focus on the causality of the Vow. If your goal is to be a more supportive leader, your practice (the cause) is to chant with the determination to develop unshakable patience and wisdom daily. The supporting leadership (the effect) will naturally follow.
These methods help ensure your efforts aren’t just external striving, but are instead focused on drawing forth the immense treasure already contained within your life.
From Personal Treasure to Global Peace
The moment the poor man discovers the priceless jewel (his Buddha Nature), his life state immediately transforms. He realizes the vast wealth and potential he has possessed all along. However, the true ethical imperative of this realization is not self-enrichment, but sharing that truth with others.
1. The Transformation: Ending Personal Poverty
When the poor man recognizes the jewel, he ends his struggle for subsistence. Spiritually, this signifies:
- Confidence: He gains unshakable conviction in his inherent worth and potential.
- Freedom: He is liberated from the chains of ignorance, fear, and desire (avidya and samsara).
- Resource Utilization: He begins to use the wisdom and compassion (the qualities of the jewel) that were previously dormant.
2. Investing in Others: The Bodhisattva Path
A person who has uncovered their Buddha Nature cannot keep that joy and truth to themselves. This naturally leads to the Bodhisattva ideal—a commitment to helping all others attain the same enlightenment. This is your concept of “investing in others.”
- Sharing the Method: The goal is not just to give material aid (like the rich friend did initially), but to teach others how to look within their own robes for their own jewels. In SGI, this is the act of sharing the teachings (propagation) and supporting fellow members’ faith.
- Networking for Peace: When individuals successfully reveal their Buddha Nature, their lives emit positive energy, wisdom, and compassion. This is the basis for a peaceful network:
- One person’s Human Revolution (inner change) impacts their family and community.
- Many people undergoing the Human Revolution created a network of peace at the community and national levels.
- The Shared Treasure: This is what Nichiren Daishonin’s philosophy emphasizes: the goal is kosen-rufu (literally “to widely declare and spread peace and happiness”). The discovery of the jewel leads directly to the desire to create a peaceful country and a peaceful world.
3. Building the Peaceful Country
The cumulative result of this widespread “investment” (sharing the means for people to realize their potential) is the realization of a society founded on respect, dignity, and wisdom:
| Individual Discovery (The Jewel) | Collective Impact (The Peaceful Network) |
| Inherent Wisdom | Wise Governance and Dialogue |
| Boundless Compassion | Social Justice and Mutual Support |
| Unshakable Courage | Determination |
The poor man realizing his fortune makes him wealthy; the poor man then showing others their fortune helps build a world based on shared, limitless potential.
Economic Policy Rooted in Human Dignity
If the poor man, having found his priceless jewel (Buddha Nature), he decided to invest that realization in building a peaceful country, the resulting economic philosophy would be centered on human value and potential rather than just cash flow. This aligns perfectly with the SGI philosophy of elevating life.
| Current Economic Focus | The “Jewel-Centric” Economic Focus |
| Maximizing Profit/Cash Returns | Maximizing Human Potential/Dignity |
| Scarcity and Competition | Abundance and Collaboration (Drawing forth inherent wealth) |
| GDP as the Ultimate Metric | GNH (Gross National Happiness) and Human Development Index |
An economy rooted in the jewel concept would prioritize:
- Universal Education as Investment: Ensuring every citizen has the resources and opportunity to “uncover their own jewel” through high-quality education, job training, and personal development—seeing education not as a cost, but as the highest form of societal return.
- Dignified Labor: Ensuring all work contributes to human well-being and is fairly compensated, allowing every individual to feel the value of their contribution and not forcing them back into the “poverty” mindset.
- Sustainable Wealth: Using natural resources (the nation’s external treasure) in a way that preserves them for future generations, reflecting the eternal nature of the inner jewel.
The True Measure of Success: Beyond the Vault
The moment the poor man discovered the priceless jewel 💎 in his robe, his first impulse wasn’t hoarding; it was investing his newfound dignity in others—a commitment to helping them realize their own worth and build a network of peaceful, prosperous countries.
This transformation provides a profound lens through which to view modern success.
In today’s world, we have a great many billionaires and corporate giants who believe they are successful. And indeed, they are monumentally successful at the external task of making money 💰 and accumulating capital.

However, the parable reveals a deeper truth: Until they invest their resources, time, and influence primarily in advancing human dignity and unlocking the potential of people—rather than relentlessly pursuing only cash returns—they have not achieved authentic success.
Like the poor man who suffered daily, they remain caught in a form of spiritual poverty if their ultimate motivation is always looking for more money. True wealth, derived from the inner jewel, is measured by the quality of life it elevates, not the quantity of assets it accumulates. To be truly successful is to use your power to show the world that every single human being already carries a treasure of infinite worth.
Nkrumah as the “Generous Friend” Analogy
In the context of the analogy, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s actions and philosophy align with the generous friend 🤝 in several key ways:

1. Awareness of the “Hidden Treasure” (Potential)
The generous friend knew the poor man possessed a priceless jewel he didn’t realize he had. Similarly, Nkrumah’s worldview was rooted in the belief that the African people (the “poor man”) inherently possessed:
- Dignity and Self-Worth: A treasure stolen or obscured by colonialism.
- Vast Resources and Potential: Economic and human wealth that was being exploited or ignored.
Nkrumah saw the inherent value and capability of the Ghanaian and African people, a value they were being conditioned to forget or deny under colonial rule.
2. The Act of “Giving the Jewel” (Liberation)
The rich friend’s act was to provide the means for the poor man to escape his struggle. Nkrumah’s great mission was to provide the means for Ghanaians and Africans to escape oppression and poverty:
- Political Independence: This was the initial, visible “gift”—the necessary precondition for utilizing the hidden treasure.
- Economic Stance: His push for economic independence (e.g., industrialization, the Volta River Project) was the means to help the newly independent nations finally “look into their robes” and utilize their own economic resources for their own benefit, not foreign exploiters.
3. Fighting “Ignorance” (Neo-Colonialism)
The core tragedy of the parable is the poor man’s ignorance of his wealth. Nkrumah constantly warned against neo-colonialism, which he saw as a deliberate effort to keep newly independent states politically free but economically impoverished—a state of economic “ignorance” where the resource treasure remained locked away or exploited by outsiders.
⚖️ A Key Difference
While the analogy is strong, a crucial difference exists:
- Parable: The jewel was given and hidden by the rich friend.
- Reality: Nkrumah did not give the potential or wealth; he awakened the people to the wealth they already possessed (their resources, culture, and political will) and provided the tools (governance and economic policy) for them to claim it back.
So yes, we can argue that Nkrumah acted as a wise and generous leader who, like the rich friend, saw the immense, but unrealized potential of his people and sought to empower them to unlock their own economic and political treasures.
The Dialogue Begins

Cookieteegh (Host): Hello and welcome, dear readers, listeners, and viewers from around the globe! I’m Cookieteegh, your host, and I’m thrilled to be back with our special lifestyle and wisdom segment. Today, we have the distinct pleasure of speaking with an incredible figure in education and community upliftment.
Joining me today is Ms. Assumpta Gahutu—the Principal of Babies and Toddlers Daycare and, as many of you know her, the Co-Founder of the Assumpta Weekly Newsletter & Lifestyle Magazine. Welcome, Ms. Gahutu!

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: Thank you, Cookieteegh. It’s a genuine pleasure to connect with your audience.

Cookieteegh: The pleasure is all ours! Now, let’s dive right into the heart of our discussion. We’re here today to talk about your recent, deeply resonant newsletter article titled: “The Jewel in the Winter Coat” .
Let me start by asking you about that title. It speaks of extraordinary wisdom and humanity. I’m wondering, why did you choose this particular story—the parable from the Lotus Sutra—at this time? Does it hold a specific relevance to our modern world?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: Thank you for that excellent question, Cookieteegh. The answer is an emphatic yes, the article holds immense relevance for our time, perhaps more than ever.
The parable of the Jewel in the Winter Coat, or the Parable of the Jewel Hidden in the Robe, is about ignorance of inherent potential. The poor man was literally dying of hunger while a priceless fortune was sewn into his own coat.
In our time, we are drowning in a different kind of poverty: a poverty of spirit. We have global wealth, unparalleled technology, and mountains of data—our collective external ‘treasure’ is immense. Yet, everywhere you look, people are struggling with anxiety, despair, comparison, and a deep, nagging sense of inadequacy.
This is the modern tragedy: we are constantly chasing external validation, quick fixes, and material possessions, convinced that happiness is out there. Meanwhile, our Buddha Nature—our inherent capacity for courage, wisdom, and compassion—the true “Jewel”—lies dormant and forgotten within us. We are spiritually impoverished while sitting on a spiritual goldmine!
I chose this parable now to serve as a wake-up call. I want to encourage every person to stop the frantic search outside themselves and begin the deeply important work of self-awareness—to look into the lining of their own lives and finally utilize the power that has always been theirs. It is the only true pathway to building a peaceful and dignified world.

Cookieteegh: That analogy of “spiritual poverty” in an age of material abundance is very powerful. So, if the solution is to “look into the lining of our own lives,” what specifically is the first tool you recommend for uncovering that hidden jewel? Is it faith, introspection, or perhaps something more structured?
That’s an excellent follow-up question, Cookieteegh.
The First Tool: Chanting and Structured Awareness

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: If the solution is to look into the lining of our lives, the first tool is one that is both spiritual and highly structured: the practice of chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo combined with the framework of SGI activities.
It’s not enough to simply think about being self-aware; you need a system to pull that awareness out of the unconscious and into action.
The Chanting Foundation

The act of chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo is the deepest form of introspection. It’s the spiritual practice that taps directly into the Buddha Nature—the jewel itself. It’s like turning on the brightest light in a dark room. Chanting is what generates the wisdom and the courage necessary to honestly face our limitations and recognize our authentic, powerful self.
Structured Awareness Through Action
We then leverage specific SGI activities, such as the home visitations we discussed. Why are these so crucial?

- They Demand Courage: To genuinely engage with another person and offer guidance, you must pull out the courage and compassion (qualities of the jewel) that you didn’t know you had.
- They Provide Immediate Feedback: When you interact, you see your values, your strengths, and your reactions reflected in real-time. This is the self-assessment tool.
- The Report is the Reflection: When you make your post-visitation report, you are forced to analyze the interaction—what worked, what didn’t, and how you impacted that member. This structured reflection transforms a simple action into a profound moment of learning about your authentic leadership self.
So, the first step is a dynamic process: Chanting unlocks the power, and structured engagement like home visits provides the mirror and the method for you to see and utilize the jewel shining within. That continuous cycle of faith, practice, and study is the ultimate pathway to manifesting that potential.

Cookieteegh: That’s fascinating—it suggests success isn’t just about what you achieve, but who you become in the process of helping others achieve their own success. Thank you, Ms. Gahutu, for shedding such a brilliant light on this wisdom!
The Dialogue Continues: The Personal Inventory

Cookieteegh (Host): Ms. Gahutu, your explanation of the “spiritual poverty” in our time truly resonated. It compels us to turn inward. As we wrap up this profound discussion, I want to pose three questions directly to our audience, inspired by the essence of your article:
❓ Have You Ever Carried a Treasure Without Knowing It?
Cookieteegh (Host): Think about it, listeners: Have you ever looked back on a past hardship, a challenge you overcame, or a connection you let fade, and realized only later the immense gift or opportunity it actually was? Haven’t we all, at some point, been unaware of our hidden gifts, opportunities, and inner worth?
❓ So, What Treasure Are We Wearing Unknowingly?
Cookieteegh (Host): The poor man wore a jewel in his coat. What are we wearing right now? Ms. Gahutu, based on the wisdom you’ve shared, when we talk about the “jewel” sewn into our spiritual “winter coat,” what specific inner treasures are we most likely to be overlooking today?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: That is such a vital question, Cookieteegh. What we are wearing unknowingly isn’t a single gem, but a vast mine of potential. Today, the three most overlooked treasures are:
- Unshakable Courage (The Treasure of Faith): We are wearing the inherent potential to face any challenge—financial, emotional, or professional—without being defeated. We often forget we have this courage and instead let fear dictate our choices. We’re waiting for the fear to go away, when the jewel grants us the power to act in spite of the fear.
- Boundless Wisdom (The Treasure of Discernment): We wear the ability to make the correct choice, even in complex situations. We ignore this inner voice and instead rely on fleeting public opinion or external pressures. The wisdom of our Buddha Nature is the internal compass that guides us toward true happiness, yet we often leave it locked away, opting for confusion instead.
- Limitless Compassion (The Treasure of Connection): We wear the capacity for deep empathy and love that allows us to build powerful, lasting connections and contribute meaningfully to society. We often mistake this for simple kindness. This compassion is the engine for collective peace, yet we restrict it, often limiting it only to those who look or think like us, thereby perpetuating division and social poverty.
These are the three priceless jewels sewn into the lining of every person’s life—treasures that, once recognized and utilized, ensure we never have to live in spiritual or material poverty again.
The Dialogue Continues: The Roadmap to Potential

Cookieteegh (Host): Ms. Gahutu, that is a truly powerful framework! You’ve taken the lofty wisdom of the “Jewel in the Winter Coat” and given us a practical roadmap. Specifically, the steps you outline—Self-Awareness, Cultivating Trust, and Inclusive Leadership—provide the structure many people are missing.
❓ The Roadmap to Inclusive Leadership

Cookieteegh (Host): Let’s focus on that first step: “Step into Self-Awareness.” You emphasize that SGI home visitations are the key setting where our “true self is revealed.” For someone who might feel intimidated by this kind of deep engagement, how does the simple act of visiting someone else and listening actually help them “discover their authentic self” and find the courage you mention? It seems counterintuitive to find yourself by focusing on someone else.

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: That’s a wonderful point, Cookieteegh, and it gets to the very heart of the Buddhist principle of interdependence.
The reason you find yourself when you focus on someone else is that courage is a muscle that must be exercised outside of your comfort zone. When you sit down with a member during a home visit, you are not focused on your own problems; you are focused on helping them tap into their potential.
In that moment of genuine, outward-directed compassion, your ego defenses drop. You stop worrying about how you look or if you sound smart. You are forced to summon your highest life condition—your most authentic self—to offer guidance and encouragement.
The courage you display in that moment to connect and contribute is the Jewel of Buddha Nature manifesting. It’s only by acting for the sake of others that you realize, “Ah! I have this strength within me!” The feedback you receive, or even the positive change you facilitate in the member, serves as tangible proof that your inherent treasure is real and active. It becomes the crucible where self-knowledge is forged, precisely because it forces you to stop looking at yourself and start looking through yourself to serve a larger purpose.

Cookieteegh (Host): That reframes everything! So, true self-discovery isn’t a passive meditation; it’s an active engagement of courage for the benefit of another. Thank you so much for breaking down that powerful philosophy, Ms. Gahutu. It gives us a beautiful framework for turning potential into reality.
That is the natural and powerful next step! The dialogue will now move from personal discovery to global application and the critique of modern success.
The Dialogue Continues: The Bodhisattva Path

Cookieteegh (Host): Ms. Gahutu, that is the most inspiring vision. You’re saying that the ultimate ethical imperative of finding this inner jewel is not personal enrichment, but sharing that truth with others—what you call the Bodhisattva Path. It shifts the focus entirely from “what I can get” to “what I can give.”
❓ From Personal Jewel to Global Peace

Cookumtegh (Host): Let’s explore this transition from “Personal Treasure to Global Peace.” You state clearly that when the poor man finds his jewel, he immediately gains Confidence, Freedom, and the ability to utilize his dormant Wisdom and Compassion. But how does the act of “Investing in Others”—teaching them how to look within their own robes—actually scale up to create Wise Governance and the Determination to Abolish War and Conflict?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: This is where the wisdom of the Lotus Sutra becomes a blueprint for global change, Cookieteegh. It’s the principle of Human Revolution leading to Kosen-rufu (world peace).
The reason this scales up is because peace is not a negotiation; it’s a life condition.
- When one person experiences The Transformation (ending personal spiritual poverty), they move from fear and envy (the causes of conflict) to wisdom and compassion.
- The Investment in Others phase then begins. By sharing the method (the practice), you help others make that same shift. This creates a Peaceful Network where individuals are not defined by their differences but united by their shared potential.
- This network forms the foundation for Building the Peaceful Country. When citizens act from Inherent Wisdom, their demands on governance are for transparency and justice (Wise Governance). When they act from Boundless Compassion, they naturally reject discrimination and seek solutions for those in need (Social Justice). When they act from Unshakable Courage, they refuse to accept war as an answer (Determination to Abolish War).
The logic is simple: The poor man realizing his fortune makes him wealthy; the poor man then showing others their fortune helps build a world based on shared, limitless potential. That is the practical mechanism for peace.
❓ The Challenge to Modern Success

Cookieteegh (Host): That is profoundly articulated. Now, I want to take this wisdom and apply it to where most of the world measures success today: the economy. Ms. Gahutu, your philosophy offers a powerful critique of purely financial success.
Let’s talk about the modern billionaire. In today’s world, we have a lot of billionaires who think they are successful. Well, they are successful in making money, certainly. But according to the parable, until they invest their money primarily in human dignity and unlocking the potential of people, rather than prioritizing cash returns and further accumulation, they have not achieved authentic, complete success. Why is this relentless search for more money—even when they have billions—the definition of spiritual failure, according to the principle of the hidden jewel?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: That is the core difference between material success and authentic human success.
The rich friend in the parable placed a jewel of unlimited potential into his friend’s robe, providing a final solution to suffering. He acted from profound, pure compassion.

Today’s billionaire, who is always looking for money and invest in waging wars to kill innocent people, in a spiritual sense, they still acting like the poor man—desperately searching for external validation and security, despite having a massive vault. They are still obsessed with scarcity. They have not recognized their own inner jewel, which is the capacity to be satisfied, complete, and fully utilized in service of human value.
- The Problem: When success is defined only by the cash return, money becomes the master, not the tool. The individual sacrifices their innate compassion and wisdom (the jewel) for a pile of gold (the external coat).
- The Truth: Until they use that external wealth to fuel the Human Revolution of others—to create systems that empower people to find their own inherent worth—they are still slaves to the fear that they don’t have enough. They are still living in the shadow of ignorance, unable to use their true, inner wealth to benefit humanity.
True success, derived from the discovered jewel, means using wealth to illuminate the inherent worth of every person, thus contributing to the creation of that peaceful, dignified country. The wealth itself is just the tool; the impact on the human spirit is the true return.

Cookieteegh (Host): Ms. Assumpta Gahutu, that is a powerful charge to all of us, regardless of our bank account. It reminds us that the greatest investment we can ever make is in the boundless potential of the human spirit. Thank you for this absolutely enriching and vital dialogue.
This brings the discussion full circle, connecting the ancient spiritual wisdom to modern geopolitical liberation!.
The Legacy of the Generous Friend: Nkrumah’s Vision
Cookieteegh (Host): Ms. Gahutu, this is an absolutely brilliant final layer to your analysis. I am linking the spiritual wisdom of self-discovery directly to the political and economic liberation of a nation through the lens of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Nkrumah: Awakening the Treasure of Africa
Cookieteegh (Host): Let’s establish this powerful analogy clearly. You argue that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s actions and philosophy align with the generous friend 🤝 from the parable in three major ways. Could you summarize for our global audience how Nkrumah perceived the “jewel” within the African people?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: Certainly, Cookieteegh. Nkrumah’s genius was not just political; it was philosophical. He was the Generous Friend who saw the truth:
- Awareness of the “Hidden Treasure” (Potential): Nkrumah saw that the African people (the “poor man”) inherently possessed Dignity and Self-Worth and Vast Resources and Potential—a treasure stolen or obscured by colonialism. He saw the immense value that the people themselves were conditioned to forget.
- The Act of “Giving the Jewel” (Liberation): His fight for Political Independence was the initial, visible “gift”—the necessary precondition. His Economic Stance (like the Volta River Project) was the means to help these nations finally “look into their robes” and utilize their own economic resources for their own benefit.
- Fighting “Ignorance” (Neo-Colonialism): He constantly fought neo-colonialism—the deliberate effort to keep states politically free but economically impoverished. This economic “ignorance” kept the resource treasure locked away.
However, as you pointed out, there is a Key Difference: The parable’s friend gave the jewel; Nkrumah awakened the people to the wealth they already possessed (their resources, culture, and political will). He was a wise and generous leader who sought to empower them to unlock their own political and economic treasures. 🌟
Conclusion: The Jewel in the Winter Coat

Cookieteegh (Host): Ms. Assumpta Gahutu, this conversation has moved from ancient parable to personal empowerment, and finally to global leadership and economic justice. You have provided a profound definition of success—one rooted not in accumulation, but in the relentless commitment to Human Dignity.
We thank you for sharing the extraordinary wisdom contained within your article, “The Jewel in the Winter Coat.” 🧥💎 Your message is clear: whether we are struggling as individuals or as nations, the solution is never external. The greatest treasure, the source of our strength, wisdom, and peace, has been sewn into the fabric of our being all along. We simply need to look within and begin using it for the transformation of our lives and our world.

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu: Thank you, Cookieteegh. My deepest hope is that every reader and listener today accepts the challenge to realize their own jewel. True global peace begins with that single, inner discovery.Cookieteegh (Host): And with that powerful call to action, we close this segment. Thank you for joining us, dear international readers! Until next time, may you all find and utilize the priceless treasure that is inherently yours. Goodbye for now! 👋
