In “The Coco Flower in Full Bloom”, Coco reflects onthe values that have shaped her journey:
“Those who embrace the teachings of perseverance and struggle will rise to great heights. Serena Williams, my hero, and my mentor, showed me that every battle is part of a greater purpose. Her legacy goes beyond the trophies; it’s in the strength, humility, and sincerity she embodies.”

Coco recounts the deep influence of Serena Williams in her journey. Inspired by Williams’ unmatched work ethic and resilience, Coco draws strength from her hero’s example. Her journey mirrors the powerful philosophy passed down from her spiritual mentors, including the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin:
“Those who believe in and practise the Mystic Law will surely rise to great benefit, equal to the Buddha.”
( “Letter to The Sage Nichimyo,”) The writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 323). A passionate spirit to grasp the essence of the Mystic Law will surely give rise to great benefits equal to the Buddha’s.
In this deeply personal article, Coco shares how her philosophy, rooted in resilience, faith, and the determination to succeed, empowers her to fulfil her potential. Despite obstacles, including balancing academics, tennis, and the struggles that come with life, Coco found the strength to push forward. Through hard work and inspiration drawn from the Williams sisters, she vowed to never slacken in her training and to always strive for greatness.
“I may be Black, but darkness does not define me,” the Coco Flower says. “In this darkness lies the strength and beauty that perseveres against all odds. My colour is not a burden but a reminder of the resilience within each of us.”

Dialogue: Coco Gauff and Assumpta Gahutu
A warm, inspiring conversation between Coco Gauff and Assumpta Gahutu, the CEO of Assumpta Newsletters, in celebration of Coco’s journey, resilience, and the empowering philosophy that shapes her path.
Asssumpta Gahutu: Good afternoon, Coco! It’s an absolute honour to sit down with you today. Thank you for joining us at Assumpta Newsletters. Your journey has been nothing short of inspiring, and we’re thrilled to dive into your story in this special edition.

Coco Gauff : Thank you so much for having me, Assumpta. It’s a privilege to be here with you, and I’m excited to share my journey with everyone.

Asssumpta Gahutu: We’re equally excited, Coco. Let’s start by talking about something that truly resonates in your story: Black excellence and resilience. The “Coco Flower” has become a symbol of strength, thriving even through the challenges of the world. Could you share with us what it means for you to carry that legacy forward?

Coco Gauff : Of course. For me, the “Coco Flower” is more than just a personal symbol—it represents the enduring strength and beauty of the Black experience. Despite the challenges we’ve faced, there’s a deep-rooted history of perseverance, resilience, and triumph. When I think about my journey, I know it’s not just about me. I’m part of something much bigger, something that has overcome so much. Being able to thrive as a Black woman in this space, where our presence wasn’t always welcomed, means a lot. It’s a daily reminder that, no matter the odds, we can and will bloom.

Asssumpta Gahutu: It’s incredibly powerful to hear you say that. Your journey has been one of immense growth. You’ve balanced household responsibilities, academics, and your tennis aspirations from a young age. And through it all, you’ve drawn inspiration from Serena Williams. Can you talk about how her legacy influenced your determination and career?

Coco Gauff : Serena was, and still is, my hero. Growing up, I watched her dominate on the court, but it wasn’t just her tennis that inspired me—it was her determination, her work ethic, and her heart. What I’ve learned from her is that it’s not about the trophies you win, it’s about how you carry yourself through it all. Serena’s humility, her strength, and her ability to inspire the next generation—are qualities I strive to embody. As a young player, I promised myself that I would work hard to be like her, not only in tennis but in life.

Asssumpta Gahutu : I can feel the admiration and gratitude you have for Serena. Her legacy goes beyond achievements on the court, and it’s clear that her example is one of selfless inspiration. Speaking of legacy, we also see a deep influence from the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin in your journey, particularly the concept of the Mystic Law. How has this philosophy shaped your growth, especially when faced with challenges?

Coco Gauff : The teachings of Nichiren Daishonin have been fundamental to my growth, especially during tough times. The idea that belief in the Mystic Law and a passionate seeking spirit can unlock one’s full potential resonated with me. It’s about not just being content with where you are but continuously striving for growth. Life has its struggles, but I believe that through faith and effort, we can transform our circumstances. This philosophy has given me the mental strength to push through the toughest days and stay focused on what truly matters—growing and becoming the best version of myself.

Asssumpta Gahutu : That’s so powerful, Coco. Your message of empowerment shines through. One of the most striking parts of your journey is your declaration, “I may be Black, but darkness does not define me.” It’s a powerful statement that speaks to the resilience and strength within. How do you hope this message resonates with young people, particularly those who may feel their challenges define them?

Coco Gauff: I want every young person to know that your circumstances do not define you. The challenges, the obstacles, the moments when you feel like giving up—they don’t have to be the defining moments of your life. It’s about how you rise above them. My message is simple: within each of us, there’s an incredible strength, a fire that refuses to be extinguished. No matter where we come from, no matter what we’ve faced, we can bloom—just like the Coco Flower. I hope that my journey can inspire others to tap into that resilience and realize that greatness is within all of us.

Asssumpta-Gahutu : That’s an incredibly empowering message, Coco. Your story is one of determination, faith, and the unyielding pursuit of your dreams. This edition promises to be a beacon of hope for many readers. Before we wrap up, what would you say to young athletes, particularly those balancing so many responsibilities like you did growing up, about fulfilling their potential?

Coco-Gauff: I’d say, don’t be afraid to dream big, but understand that the journey won’t always be easy. Balancing responsibilities, whether it’s school, family, or other commitments, can be tough. But what matters most is that you keep moving forward, keep working hard, and stay focused on what you want to achieve. It’s not about perfection—it’s about persistence. And remember, just like the Coco Flower, you have everything inside of you to blossom, no matter the odds.

Asssumpta Gahutu : Before we close, Coco, I’d like to ask you one more question. The title of this article, “The Coco Flower in Full Bloom” and the content “Fulfilling My Potential” reflect a philosophy that has guided your journey. You’ve reached incredible heights in your career, and your resilience and focus have been key to your success. Do you believe that if Black people uphold a similar philosophy—focusing on self-growth, community building, investing in higher education, creating businesses, and utilising their resources—they can fulfil their potential for good, not just for themselves but for their communities as well?

Coco Gauff: That’s a profound question, Assumpta. I believe that. The philosophy of believing in one’s potential and never settling for less can be transformative for individuals and entire communities. When we focus on education, on empowering ourselves with knowledge, and on building businesses that serve our people, we’re not only creating opportunities for economic growth but also for cultural and social empowerment. Investing in higher education is key—it’s the foundation for developing the leaders of tomorrow.
When we create businesses and utilise our resources, we start to build generational wealth and, more importantly, we shift the power dynamics. It’s not just about acquiring material possessions, like cars and big buildings—it’s about creating a sustainable future, one where we control our destinies, from the products we create to the communities we build.
This philosophy, for me, is all about taking ownership of our future and making sure our growth is grounded in a sense of purpose and a vision for the greater good. It’s about working together, supporting one another, and lifting each other. When Black people embrace their potential and work collectively, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.
We’ve always had the strength, the creativity, and the resilience—now, it’s about channelling those qualities into purposeful action for the greater good. It’s about leaving a legacy that not only uplifts us but also enriches future generations. I truly believe we can build communities that thrive, that are self-sustaining, and that provide opportunities for success to everyone within them.

Assumpta Gahutu: Thank you for that powerful response, Coco. Your words inspire not just athletes, but people from all walks of life to look inward and take action for the greater good of their communities.

Coco Gauff: Thank you, Assumpta. I believe in the power of community, and of uplifting one another, and I’m excited to see what the future holds when we all begin to fulfil our true potential.

.Assumpta Gahutu: Thank you so much for sharing your incredible journey with us, Coco. Your story is truly inspiring, and I know it will touch many hearts. We look forward to sharing this special edition with the world on November 19th.

Coco Gauff: Thank you, Assumpta. It’s been an honour to share my story with you. I hope it inspires others to keep pushing, keep believing, and keep growing. I’m excited to see where this journey takes us all!

This dialogue beautifully highlights the key points: Coco’s journey, her admiration for Serena Williams, the influence of Nichiren Daishonin’s teachings, and her empowering message of resilience and self-belief. It sets the stage for an inspiring read, one that blends sports, spirituality, and personal triumphs, encouraging readers to fulfil their potential.
