GLOBAL HEADLINE
Where There Is Unseen Virtue, There Will Be Visible Reward
The most enduring victories in life often begin in places few people notice.
Long before peace becomes visible in a society, someone chooses integrity over convenience. Long before communities experience transformation, individuals decide to create value, often without recognition, applause, or immediate reward.
In this special report, THE JEWEL GIRL explores the timeless principle of unseen virtue and visible reward, and its profound connection to the mission of securing the foundation for the peace of the land.
Because every lasting achievement begins with a cause. And every strong society begins with strong human character.
FEATURE REPORT
THE UNSEEN VIRTUE: The Foundation Nobody Sees
Reference: The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Volume 1, p. 907
In a world that often celebrates visibility, influence, and instant results, one of the most important forces shaping the future remains largely unnoticed.
That force is character.
The quiet decision to act with integrity.
The determination to persevere through difficulty.
The courage to uphold values when compromise would be easier.
These actions rarely make headlines. Yet they often lead to meaningful victories.

WHAT THIS ISSUE UNPACKS
SPECIAL INSIGHT: The Work Nobody Sees
Some of the greatest acts of courage are never publicly celebrated. Some of the most meaningful sacrifices are never recorded. Some of the strongest people continue doing what is right even when nobody notices. Yet these quiet actions may be laying the foundation for something far greater than themselves.
The principle of unseen virtue encourages us to look beyond immediate outcomes and focus instead on the causes we create every day.
The Power of Unseen Causes
- Integrity: Doing what is right even when nobody is watching.
- Courage: Standing firm despite uncertainty or opposition.
- Compassion: Creating value without demanding recognition.
- Perseverance: Continuing forward when results are not immediately visible.
The Question We Must Ask: The question is not: “What reward am I receiving today?” The deeper question is: “What kind of future am I creating through my actions today?”
FEATURE ANALYSIS: When Character Becomes the Foundation
Peace cannot simply be declared. It must be cultivated. A peaceful society depends on people who are willing to:
- Protect what is precious.
- Stand against injustice.
- Encourage those who have lost hope.
- Resist greed and destructive ambition.
- Build rather than destroy.
- Accept responsibility for future generations.
- Create value for others.
The foundation of peace is therefore not primarily political. It is human. The condition of society reflects the condition of the people who shape it.
SECURING THE FOUNDATION: What Are We Really Building?
Nations can build roads, bridges, airports, and skyscrapers. These achievements matter. But what happens when human character fails to develop alongside material progress? What happens when visibility becomes more important than responsibility? What happens when success becomes disconnected from conscience?
THE JEWEL GIRL invites us to consider a deeper question: “What kind of human beings are we becoming while building the future?”
Because the strongest foundation is not made of steel or concrete. It is made of character.
THE QUESTION FROM THE YOUTH: What Must We Cultivate Within Ourselves?
If the peace of the land depends upon the people, then the work must begin within each individual.
Seven Foundations of Inner Peace
- Courage: Stand for what is right.
- Wisdom: Distinguish truth from deception.
- Compassion: Create value and contribute to the happiness of others.
- Discipline: Remain committed when enthusiasm fades.
- Integrity: Refuse to compromise your principles.
- Responsibility: Recognise that personal actions affect society.
- Hope: Believe that today’s causes can create tomorrow’s victories.
Peace in the land begins with peace in the human heart.
📜 THE GOSHO PASSAGE & EDITORIAL BACKGROUND
In “Unseen Virtue and Visible Reward” (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, pp. 907–908), Nichiren writes:

“As I have often mentioned before, it is said that, where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward.”
He then explains to Kingo:
“Your fellow samurai all slandered you to your lord, and he also has wondered if it was true, but because you have for some years now honestly maintained a strong desire for your lord’s welfare in his next life, you received a blessing like this. This is just the beginning; be confident that the great reward also is sure to come.”
Historical Context
Shijō Kingo was a samurai and devoted disciple of Nichiren. His relationship with his feudal lord, Ema Mitsutoki, had deteriorated after Kingo’s fellow samurai made false accusations against him. Kingo lost standing and lands.

Nichiren repeatedly encouraged Kingo not to respond with anger or retaliation, but instead to demonstrate his sincerity through his conduct, maintain good relationships, support his family, and continue his practice. When circumstances began turning in Kingo’s favour, Nichiren reminded him that his lands could be restored and increased—which historically occurred six months later in 1278—because of his unseen sincerity and dedication.
Why This Matters to THE JEWEL GIRL
Victory begins before victory becomes visible. The world sees the reward, but it does not necessarily see:
- The years of sincerity behind it
- The courage to endure misunderstanding
- The discipline required not to retaliate
- The compassion shown when others are hostile
- The prayers and efforts made in silence
- The determination to remain true to one’s principles
What are we building when nobody is watching? The foundation of peace is built through unseen causes: a woman who refuses to answer hatred with hatred, a citizen who refuses corruption, a youth who chooses integrity in secret, and a leader who serves rather than exploits. When accumulated, these unseen causes transform into visible victory.
THE JEWEL GIRL REFLECTION
The Virtue Nobody Applauds
Perhaps the world will not notice today. Perhaps nobody will thank you. Perhaps your effort appears small.
Continue.
Roots do not announce their work beneath the earth. Rivers do not celebrate every drop that sustains their flow. And genuine character does not require an audience to remain faithful to what is right.
The foundation is being secured. Even when unseen. Especially when unseen.
GLOBAL VISION
From Unseen Virtue to Visible Victory
History is not shaped only by famous names. It is also shaped by ordinary people making extraordinary choices every day:
- A mother raising a child with integrity.
- A young person rejecting corruption.
- A woman finding the courage to speak.
- A citizen protecting the environment.
- A leader choosing service over self-interest.
Each action may appear small in isolation. Together, they become the architecture of a peaceful society. The future is built long before it becomes visible.
EDITORIAL CONCLUSION
SECURE THE FOUNDATION
Unseen virtue is never invisible to the future.
Every courageous action creates a cause. Every act of integrity strengthens the foundation. Every expression of compassion deepens human connection. Every individual who chooses value over selfishness contributes to the peace of the land.
The world may not see the foundation while it is being built. But it will one day see what that foundation has produced.
- SECURE THE FOUNDATION.
- CULTIVATE THE VIRTUE.
- BUILD THE CHARACTER.
- CREATE THE CAUSE.
- LET THE VICTORY BECOME VISIBLE.

THE JEWEL GIRL — GLOBAL SPECIAL REPORT
Where Character Creates the Future™
🎙️ PANEL DISCUSSION & DIALOGUE

COOKIETEEGH — HOST: Good day, and warm greetings to all our international readers joining us from across Ghana, Africa, and around the world.
Welcome to another special edition of THE JEWEL GIRL — Global Special Report, where we explore the questions of character, courage, responsibility and the kind of future we are creating through the choices we make today.
It is a pleasure to welcome our distinguished panellists: Okomfo-Black, Titan, and Jewel Girl.

COOKIETEEGH :
Thank you all for joining us and for taking the time to share your thoughts and perspectives with our readers worldwide. Today, we are unpacking a very profound theme: FROM UNSEEN VIRTUE TO VISIBLE VICTORY. And I must say, when I first reflected on this issue, I thought: This is very strong. And more importantly, it gives our readers a clear philosophical identity.
The central idea is powerful: the things that build a person, a community, and eventually a nation often happen long before anyone can see the results. And that connects beautifully with our recurring “SECURING THE FOUNDATION” theme.
- Because before we see the building, there must first be a foundation.
- Before we see character, there must first be choices.
- Before we see victory, there must first be causes.
- And before society experiences peace, there must be people who are willing to create the causes for peace.
But before I go into the wider implications of this theme, I would like us to begin with a passage from the Gosho written by Nichiren Daishonin to his disciple, Shijō Kingo.
📜 THE GOSHO PASSAGE
In “Unseen Virtue and Visible Reward,” found in The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, volume 1, pages 907–908, Nichiren writes

“As I have often mentioned before, it is said that, where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward.”
And Nichiren goes on to explain to Kingo:
“Your fellow samurai all slandered you to your lord, and he also has wondered if it was true, but because you have for some years now honestly maintained a strong desire for your lord’s welfare in his next life, you received a blessing like this. This is just the beginning; be confident that the great reward also is sure to come.”
Now, let us briefly consider the historical background.
Shijō Kingo was a samurai and a devoted disciple of Nichiren. His relationship with his feudal lord, Ema Mitsutoki, had deteriorated after fellow samurai made false accusations against him. As a result, Kingo suffered a loss of standing and lands.
Nichiren repeatedly encouraged Kingo not to respond with anger or retaliation. Instead, he encouraged him to demonstrate his sincerity through his conduct, maintain good relationships, support his family, and continue his Buddhist practice.
And when circumstances eventually began turning in Kingo’s favour, Nichiren encouraged him to remain confident that this was only the beginning.
BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US TODAY?

COOKIETEEGHM :
This is where I think the Gosho becomes particularly relevant to our lives. Because the story of Shijō Kingo is not simply a story about what happened to one samurai centuries ago. It raises a question about human behaviour.
What happens when people try to advance themselves not through their own efforts, character or contribution, but by attempting to diminish somebody else?
Kingo’s fellow samurai spoke ill of him and made false accusations against him. And unfortunately, we can recognise versions of this behaviour even today.
- There are people who attempt to win favour by discrediting someone else.
- There are people who would rather destroy another person’s reputation than develop their own ability.
- There are people who see another person’s progress as a threat and therefore try to pull that person down.
And this is where we must ask ourselves a very serious question: What kind of cause are we creating when we deliberately damage another person’s dignity?
To slander someone is not merely to speak negatively about them. When false accusations are deliberately created to damage someone’s reputation, livelihood, relationships or standing in society, the consequences can be devastating.
- It can destroy trust.
- It can damage a person’s image.
- It can deprive someone of opportunities.
- And in some circumstances, it can even threaten a person’s employment and ability to provide for themselves and their family.
So the issue of unseen virtue also requires us to examine the unseen motives behind our own behaviour.
Are we building ourselves? Or are we trying to build ourselves by destroying somebody else?
That distinction is extremely important.
THE WORK NOBODY SEES
And this brings us back to the central theme of THE JEWEL GIRL.
Think about a great tree. We see its trunk. We see its branches. We see its leaves. We see its fruit. But beneath the ground, there is an entire root system doing work that nobody sees.
- The roots do not announce their work beneath the earth.
- A river does not celebrate every drop that sustains its flow.
- And genuine character does not require an audience in order to remain faithful to what is right.
That is the meaning I take from the idea of unseen virtue.
Sometimes the most important work in our lives is happening when there is no applause. Nobody is watching. Nobody is congratulating us. Nobody is posting about it. Nobody is giving us an award.
Yet we continue.
- We remain honest.
- We remain compassionate.
- We remain courageous.
- We refuse to retaliate.
- We continue contributing.
- We continue developing ourselves.
- We continue creating value for others.
The foundation is being secured—even when it is unseen. Especially when it is unseen.
FROM UNSEEN VIRTUE TO VISIBLE VICTORY
And when we widen the lens beyond the individual, we begin to see something even more profound.
History is not shaped only by famous names. It is also shaped by ordinary people making extraordinary choices every day:
- A mother raising a child with integrity.
- A young person rejecting corruption even when corruption appears easier.
- A woman finding the courage to speak when silence would be more comfortable.
- A citizen protecting the environment even when nobody is watching.
- A leader choosing service over self-interest.
Each of these actions may appear small when viewed individually. But collectively, they become something much larger. They become the architecture of a peaceful society.
The future is built long before it becomes visible. And that brings us to the heart of today’s conversation.
❓ QUESTIONS TO THE PANEL

Okomfo-Black, Titan and Jewel Girl, our readers around the world want to hear your perspectives.
When you reflect on Nichiren’s teaching of unseen virtue and visible reward, and then connect it to our theme of SECURING THE FOUNDATION, what does this principle mean to you personally and socially?
- To Okomfo-Black: When we look at Shijō Kingo’s experience, what do you think it teaches us about integrity under pressure—particularly when other people attempt to damage our reputation?
- To Titan: We live in a world where visibility, recognition and public image can sometimes appear more important than character. What happens to society when people become more concerned with being seen doing good than actually doing good?
- To Jewel Girl: I would like to hear from you on the question at the heart of this special report: What are we building when nobody is watching? Is unseen virtue simply a personal matter? Or can the quiet choices of individuals eventually become the foundation upon which communities—and even nations—are transformed?
Panellists, the floor is yours.
PANEL RESPONSE

OKOMFO-BLACK
Integrity Under Pressure: The Test of Character
Thank you, CookieTeegh.
When I reflect on the experience of Shijō Kingo, the lesson that stands out most strongly is this: Character is tested when circumstances become unfair.
It is relatively easy to be calm when people are praising you. It is relatively easy to be confident when your reputation is secure.
- But what happens when others misunderstand you?
- What happens when false accusations are made against you?
- What happens when people attempt to diminish your standing for their own advantage?
This is the moment when integrity becomes visible.
Kingo’s greatness was not that he had enemies. Many people have enemies. His greatness was that he refused to become like those who opposed him. He did not abandon his principles. He did not allow bitterness to poison his heart. He continued acting with sincerity.
And eventually, that sincerity became his protection.
I believe this is one of the most important lessons for modern society. Today, reputations can be damaged in minutes. Rumours travel faster than truth. People sometimes form opinions without facts.
Yet the principle remains unchanged: A good name is not ultimately protected by anger. It is protected by consistent character.
When people attempt to destroy another person’s reputation, they reveal something about themselves. When a person continues to act with dignity despite adversity, they reveal something greater.
For me, securing the foundation means developing such strength of character that no external circumstance can force us to betray our values.
That is unseen virtue. And over time, it becomes visible victory.

TITAN
The Difference Between Looking Good and Being Good
Thank you.
The question that strikes me is this: What happens when appearances become more important than substance?
We live in a time when visibility has become a form of currency. Many people want:
- Recognition before achievement
- Influence before contribution
- Praise before effort
Unfortunately, when society rewards appearance more than character, people begin performing goodness rather than practising goodness. They become concerned with being seen doing the right thing rather than actually doing the right thing.
The result is a fragile society.
Why? Because performance cannot sustain peace. Only principle can.
A society built upon image will eventually face a crisis of trust. People begin questioning motives. Institutions lose credibility. Leadership loses legitimacy. Relationships become transactional. Everything starts looking impressive while becoming weaker underneath.
That is why I find the image of the foundation so powerful.
Nobody attends a ceremony to admire a foundation. People celebrate the building. Yet if the foundation is weak, the entire structure becomes vulnerable.
The foundation is discipline. The foundation is honesty. The foundation is responsibility. The foundation is consistency.
These qualities may not attract attention. They may never trend. They may never become headlines. But they determine whether a person can withstand pressure and whether a society can withstand crisis.
Key Distinction: Visible success without invisible virtue is unstable. Visible victory built upon unseen virtue is sustainable.
That, for me, is the distinction.

JEWEL GIRL
What Are We Building When Nobody Is Watching?
Thank you, CookieTeegh.
I believe this question sits at the very heart of our special report: What are we building when nobody is watching?
My answer is simple: We are building ourselves.
Every decision creates a direction. Every action plants a seed. Every choice becomes part of the person we are becoming.
Many people think character appears suddenly. It does not. Character is accumulated. It is built in small moments—moments when nobody is watching, moments when nobody would know if we compromised, moments when we could choose convenience but instead choose principle.
That is where the foundation is built.
The world often celebrates visible victories. But visible victories are usually the final chapter of a story that began much earlier:
- Before the achievement, there was discipline.
- Before the confidence, there was struggle.
- Before the success, there was perseverance.
- Before the visible reward, there was unseen virtue.
This is why I do not believe unseen virtue is merely a personal matter. Its impact reaches far beyond the individual.
- A compassionate person influences a family.
- A responsible family influences a community.
- A principled community influences a nation.
- And a nation shaped by value becomes a force for peace.
Transformation always begins somewhere. More often than not, it begins quietly.
- It begins when a young person rejects corruption.
- It begins when a mother teaches integrity.
- It begins when a citizen refuses dishonesty.
- It begins when a leader chooses service over self-interest.
These actions may seem small, but foundations are built one stone at a time. The future is built one decision at a time. And peace in the land is built one human revolution at a time.
That is why I believe unseen virtue matters so deeply. Because the future cannot see the causes we are creating today, but it will unquestionably live with the results.
So let us continue building. Let us continue encouraging. Let us continue creating value. Let us continue cultivating courage.
And let us remember: The roots do not announce their work beneath the earth. Yet one day the tree stands tall for everyone to see.
A STORY OF UNSEEN VIRTUE

Before I conclude, let me share a simple story.
There is an elderly woman known to many people as Auntie SIRI.
She sells yams at the Kaneshie Market. She lives in Apam, a considerable distance away.
Many people see her at her stall early in the morning and assume she simply arrives there like everyone else. But what many do not see is the sacrifice behind her presence.
Because Auntie SIRI knows that some of her customers arrive very early to purchase yams before going to work, she leaves Apam late at night and travels to Accra. Often, she sleeps at or near the market so that she can be ready before dawn to serve those customers who depend on her.
- Most people never witness that journey.
- They do not see her preparing at night.
- They do not see the long hours of travel.
- They do not see the discomfort she endures.
They only see the yams on display in the morning.
Yet that is exactly what unseen virtue looks like.
Auntie SIRI is not seeking applause. She is not waiting for recognition. She is simply fulfilling her responsibility with diligence and care.
- Through her effort, she creates peace for herself because she is able to earn an honest living.
- Through her effort, she creates peace for her customers because they can rely on her when they need her.
No television cameras follow her. No awards may ever be presented to her. But every journey she makes is a cause. Every act of reliability is a cause. Every sacrifice is a cause. And those causes become rewards in the lives of the people she serves.
That is why we must never underestimate the value of ordinary people doing extraordinary things quietly.
The future of society is often being built by people like Auntie SIRI—people whose names may never appear in history books, but whose character helps make life better for countless others.
That is unseen virtue. And one day, in one form or another, it becomes visible reward.
COOKIETEEGH — FINAL REFLECTION

Thank you, Okomfo-Black, Titan and Jewel Girl.
Listening to each of you, I think we have arrived at something fundamental.
- Okomfo-Black reminds us that character is revealed under pressure.
- Titan reminds us that appearance without substance cannot sustain trust.
- Jewel Girl reminds us that the transformation of society begins with the transformation of the individual.
Perhaps, then, the real meaning of SECURING THE FOUNDATION is not simply about protecting what we have already built. It is about asking whether what we are building is worthy of standing.
Because a nation can build roads, bridges, airports and skyscrapers. But if dishonesty becomes normal, if corruption becomes acceptable, if slander becomes a weapon, if selfishness becomes leadership, and if people begin to value appearance above character, then the foundation itself begins to weaken.
And that is why unseen virtue matters.
- The work nobody sees is often the work that determines everything people eventually see.
- The integrity nobody applauds today may become the trust people depend upon tomorrow.
- The courage nobody recognises may inspire someone else to stand.
- The discipline nobody notices may eventually produce extraordinary achievement.
- The compassion nobody rewards may transform a life.
- And the decision to remain principled when nobody is watching may become the cause that changes an entire future.
As we have heard in the story of Auntie SIRI, unseen virtue is not always found in grand gestures. Sometimes it is found in a market woman travelling through the night so that her customers can be served in the morning. Quiet dedication such as hers reminds us that peace, trust and progress are often built through simple acts of responsibility repeated day after day.
So perhaps the question before every one of us is not simply:
“What am I achieving?”
But:
“What am I becoming while I am achieving it?”
Because the future will inherit more than our buildings. It will inherit our values. It will inherit our examples. It will inherit the consequences of the causes we create today.
A peaceful society does not appear by accident. It is built through millions of choices made by ordinary people every day.
| Principle | Meaning |
|---|---|
| The Foundation | Character |
| The Method | Courage |
| The Practice | Integrity |
| The Reward | Trust |
| The Result | Peace |
So let us secure the foundation. Let us cultivate the virtue. Let us create the cause. Let us build the future. And let us have the patience and courage to allow what is unseen today to become visible tomorrow.
- SECURE THE FOUNDATION.
- CULTIVATE THE VIRTUE.
- CREATE THE CAUSE.
- BUILD THE FUTURE.
- LET THE VICTORY BECOME VISIBLE.
THE JEWEL GIRL™ Where Character Creates the Future™
THE JEWEL GIRL REFLECTION
Beyond Material Concerns

JEWEL GIRL :
I have also come to understand that Auntie SIRI is not solely focused on economic matters.
Its purpose goes beyond material concerns. At its heart are deeper questions of spirituality, identity, culture, history, and aspiration—questions that speak not only to Auntie SIRI herself, but also to the people she serves and the communities of which they are part.
Because prosperity is not measured only by what we possess. It is also measured by who we are becoming.
- Our economic choices are connected to our values.
- Our aspirations are connected to our identity.
- Our identity is connected to our history and culture.
- Our understanding of the future is connected to the spirit with which we build it.
This is why securing the foundation must go beyond buildings, institutions, and material progress. We must also secure the foundation of the human being.
Questions of the Heart
We must ask:
- What do we value?
- What do we remember?
- What do we believe?
- What kind of people are we becoming?
- And what kind of future are we creating for those who come after us?
Perhaps that is the deeper meaning of unseen virtue. The work of building a better future begins within us long before the world can see the results.
The future is not only something we build. It is something we become.
- SECURE THE FOUNDATION.
- CULTIVATE THE VIRTUE.
- BUILD THE CHARACTER.
- CREATE THE FUTURE.

The Vision of Assumpta Gahutu, Esq.
The ideas of the Principal of Babies Todds Daycare, Assumpta Gahutu, Esq., have had an enduring impact not only in Africa but across the globe. Her vision emerged at a time when the lingering effects of imperial and oppressive structures appeared to limit the possibilities for African-centred educational development.
Yet, through determination, compassion, and clarity of purpose, she forged a new path for early childhood education. Under her leadership, Babies Todds Daycare has grown into far more than a childcare facility; it has become a value-creating environment where the character of the future is gently formed.
Through this mission, she has nurtured the growth of young children whose lives will embody the values the world will need in the centuries to come. Her work reflects a profound belief: that the foundation of a just and humane society begins with how we educate and care for our youngest generation. In this way, the philosophy behind Babies Todds represents not simply an institution, but a lifelong commitment to shaping the character, dignity, and future of humanity.

- Ruched Off-the-Shoulder Drapery: Crafted with sleek satin-finish black fabric wrapped elegantly across the bustline, creating a graceful silhouette.
- Sheer Illusion Neckline & Ruby Embellishments: Translucent mesh at the upper chest is lavishly detailed with intricate red beadwork and gemstone fringe, resembling a jewel-encrusted collar.
- Scalloped Peplum Waist: Accentuated with rich crimson-red crystal and bead embroidery along the tailored scalloped hem, defining the waistline beautifully.
- The Slit (Skirt):
- Precision Tailoring & Mermaid Cut: The floor-length skirt hugs the waist and hips down to the knee before gently flaring into a trumpet silhouette.
- Lace Inset Details: Delicate tone-on-tone textured lace panels are seamlessly integrated along the front seams, honouring classic craftsmanship while adding depth and luxury.
Versatility in Black & Red
While rich in traditional inspiration, the dominant deep black base combined with sophisticated ruby red accents offers extreme versatility:
- Formal Dinner / Gala: The glamorous silhouette, embellished neckline, and designer Dior handbag accessory make it an absolute stunner for evening galas or award nights.
- Corporate / High-Profile Events: The structural perfection of the Kaba and structured mermaid skirt offers a modest, polished aesthetic suited for executive hosting and official brand appearances.
- Traditional Ceremonies & Funerals: Deep black with regal red accents pays respect to authentic Ghanaian royal and formal protocols, making it a powerful choice for solemn, high-profile memorial services and cultural ceremonies.
