EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: COOKIETEEGH SPEAKS WITH JOSLEYN DUMAS ON KENTE WELLNESS
A Dialogue on Tradition, Healing, and Legacy

Setting: A cosy studio draped with vibrant Kente fabrics, symbolizing the rich culture of Ghana. Cookieteegh, the charismatic media personality, sits across from Joselyn Dumas, who radiates grace in a regal Kente ensemble.

Cookieteegh: Joselyn, welcome to Aboronoma Monthly! We are thrilled to have you here.

Joselyn Dumas: Thank you so much! It’s always a pleasure to discuss Kente and the role it plays in preserving our dignity and well-being.

Cookieteegh: “Kente Wellness – Preserving Dignity” has become a movement! What inspired you to start this initiative?

Joselyn Dumas: Kente is more than just a piece of cloth—it embodies our history, our struggles, and our victories. Growing up, I watched elders wear Kente with such pride, but I also realized that many young people don’t fully understand its significance. Kente Wellness is about reconnecting with our roots, promoting self-care, and fostering a deep sense of identity and respect.

Cookieteegh: That’s powerful! How does Kente Wellness integrate traditional Ghanaian practices into modern self-care?

Joselyn Dumas: Great question! Kente Wellness is built on three pillars: ancestral healing, storytelling, and mindfulness. We reintroduce traditional herbal remedies for physical well-being, use storytelling to pass down wisdom and encourage mindfulness through cultural practices like drumming, dance, and meditation.

Cookieteegh: So, it’s about holistic wellness—mind, body, and soul?

Joselyn Dumas: Exactly! True wellness isn’t just about diet and exercise. It’s about feeling connected to something greater than yourself. When we wear Kente with knowledge of its meaning, we carry the strength of our ancestors with us.

Cookieteegh (Interviewer): Ghana is often associated with peaceful landscapes, a place where one can relax and clear their mind. The images of fast and efficient public transport, vending machines, and the countless churches across the country often come to mind. But we also know that anxiety disorders are a challenge many face. As someone who has lived in Ghana for 33 years, what do you think is Ghana’s greatest offering in times of mental distress?

Joselyn Dumas: I believe Ghana’s greatest offering is its cultural dignity. There’s something deeply soothing about witnessing people wear Kente or engage in dances like Adowa. Those expressions of our heritage carry such power and pride. I’ve experienced how Ghana’s cultural transmission can help in moments of anxiety. For me, the country’s rich traditions and its people’s sense of unity gave me a sense of grounding that helped ease my anxiety.

Cookieteegh (Interviewer): That’s truly inspiring to hear. It’s amazing how Ghana’s culture, with its deep-rooted traditions and vibrant music, has had such a positive impact on you. The sense of belonging that comes from embracing these practices, like wearing Kente or dancing Adowa, can indeed provide a strong sense of peace. I can see how it would give you a sense of connection and resilience, not just to your roots, but to your community as well. It sounds like the cultural dignity of Ghana provided you with a space for healing and personal growth.

Joselyn Dumas: Absolutely, the unity in Ghana’s culture fosters this collective energy that is both healing and uplifting. Cultural pride helps us feel secure in who we are, and when you’re connected to that, it makes facing life’s challenges a bit easier. It’s something I am truly grateful for.

Cookieteegh: Joselyn, what inspired you to launch Kente Wellness?

Joselyn Dumas: Kente is more than a cloth—it is a link to our history, culture, and identity. Kente Wellness was born out of my desire to reconnect us with our roots, fostering a sense of pride, mindfulness, and healing.

Cookieteegh: How does Kente Wellness merge traditional practices with modern well-being?

Joselyn Dumas: Through ancestral healing, storytelling, and mindfulness, we bridge the past and present. Kente helps us reconnect with our heritage, nurturing not only our physical health but also our mental and spiritual well-being.

Cookieteegh: It’s a holistic approach. What’s next for Kente Wellness?

Joselyn Dumas: We’re expanding our workshops, collaborating with artisans, and promoting cultural pride through new storytelling programs. Our mission is to deepen the connection between cultural traditions and modern wellness.
