The Courage to Cross the River: An Introduction
As the final days of 2025 unfold, the world finds itself at a profound crossroads. In this issue, we invite you to look at “this year’s world as a mirror”—not merely to reflect on the conflicts and challenges we have survived, but to recognize the singular purpose behind our presence here today.
This edition marks a historic “decisive moment” for Her Royal Highness Princess Catharina-Amalia, as she moves from the quiet protection of her heritage into the full light of global service. Symbolized by her first appearance in the Diamond Bandeau Tiara—a piece forged from the history of her ancestors and the gifts of her people—she signals a readiness to cross the metaphorical Uji and Seta rivers. This is the threshold where honor is won through the courage to lead.
Through the lens of ancient wisdom, including the resolute “Reply to Yasaburō” and the liberating metaphor of “The Bird in a Cage,” the Princess frames leadership as a collective “morning chorus”. She challenges us to realize that love is the essential power that breaks through all differences and that the strength to be free already lives within us.
Joined by the deep insights of our Co-Founder, Assumpta Gahutu, we explore a vision of security found not in isolation, but in the determination to awaken the inner potential of every human being. We invite you to step forward with us. The river is before us; the song has begun.
Facing Our Life’s Decisive Moment: Princess Amalia’s Call to Action
The Jewel of the Netherlands Unveils the Ancient Wisdom for Modern Peace
The Assumpta Newsletter Publication Magazine proudly presents its end-of-year centerpiece: “The Courage to Cross the River.” In a powerful address, Her Royal Highness Princess Catharina-Amalia frames our global struggles not as burdens, but as a CALL TO WORLD LEADERSHIP.
The Queen’s Vow: From the Cage to the Chorus
As Princess Amalia prepares for her tenure, she utilizes the Buddhist metaphor of “The Bird in a Cage” to define her leadership philosophy:

- Breaking the Illusion: Just as the bird accepts confinement through ignorance, we must not let current conflicts make us give up hope.
- The Power of the Chorus: She envisions her role as joining a collective “morning chorus,” twittering and chirping with her people to awaken their awareness.
- Inner Strength: “Love is an essential power living things possess to break through all differences”. She believes her mission is to remind every citizen that they possess the inner strength to free themselves from their own “cages”.
Heritage in Motion: The Diamond Bandeau
The Princess’s transition is marked by the Diamond Bandeau Tiara, a piece that mirrors her evolution from an heir to a Queen in full duty:
| Milestone | Historical Significance |
| 1837 | Originally a 34-diamond necklace gifted by the people to her great-great-great-great-grandmother. |
| 1937 | Transformed by Crown Princess Juliana into a modern, sleek Tiara using 27 of the original diamonds. |
| 2025 | Worn by Princess Amalia as an “entry-level” Tiara, signaling her readiness to face “this year’s world as a mirror”. |
A Decisive Moment: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Peace
Drawing from Nichiren Daishonin’s “Reply to Yasaburō,” the Princess emphasizes that our survival through the conflicts of the past year has a purpose:
“The reason that you have survived until now when so many have died was so that you would meet with this affair. This is where you will cross the Uji River. This is where you will form the Seta”.
For Princess Amalia, crossing the Uji and Seta rivers means stepping out of the “quiet protection” of her heritage and into the decisive light of service to determine whether she wins honor for her name and her nation.
Notes from the Co-Founder

Assumpta Gahutu (Principal of Babies and Toddlers)
“In our work with the next generation, we see the ‘Bird in a Cage’ every day—children waiting for a song to remind them of their potential. Princess Amalia’s message of hope and her ‘shadier route’ toward security is the uncompromising dialogue the world needs. We must have the courage to cross our own rivers together”.
The Bird in The Cage
The Bird in a Cage” story, a well-known Buddhist metaphor, used across different Buddhist traditions (including Nichiren Buddhism) to explain human suffering, attachment, and liberation. This metaphor tells the story of a bird trapped inside a cage.

Over time, the bird no longer believes there is any chance of escape. He gives up, loses hope, and becomes entangled in ignorance and illusion. Eventually, he simply stands still inside the cage, accepting confinement as his fate.
One day, a group of birds flies over the cage. Seeing their friend below, they realize that the only way to help him is not by breaking the cage, but by awakening his awareness. They begin their morning chorus—twittering and chirping together, calling out to him.
They return again, this time with even more birds, surrounding the cage with their collective song. As the chorus grows louder and stronger, something stirs within the caged bird. He begins to feel confidence—first in the community around him, and then in himself.
Through their unity and encouragement, the bird comes to a powerful realization: No one needs to open the cage for him.
He already possesses the inner strength to free himself. With this renewed belief, the bird acts—and leaves the cage.
In that moment of clarity, he understood that he didn’t need anyone to unlock the door. He had always had the power to free himself. He simply needed the song of others to remind him who he was.
A Call to the Morning Chorus: The Crossing of the Uji River
A Speech by Her Royal Highness Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands.

”Citizens of the Netherlands and the global community,
As 2025 draws to its close, I stand before you at a decisive moment—a threshold between the quiet protection of my heritage and the full light of public service. I look at the world this year as a mirror, reflecting both the conflicts we have endured and the profound reason we remain here today.
There is an ancient wisdom that reminds us: the reason we have survived when so many have not is so that we might meet this specific affair. For me, this is the moment to cross the Uji River and ford the Seta. These are not just historical boundaries, but spiritual ones. They represent the point of no return where we must decide whether to win honor or disgrace our names through our actions.
In my reflections, I am drawn to the metaphor of the ‘Bird in a Cage’. For too long, many in our world have felt trapped by ignorance or hopelessness, standing still inside the cage of their own suffering. But we must remember that love is the essential power we possess to break through all differences.
I do not wish to be a leader who simply unlocks a door from the outside. Instead, I vow to join the ‘morning chorus’—to chirp and song with you until that collective harmony awakens the awareness within every heart. We must realize that we already possess the inner strength to free ourselves. We do not need to wait for a key; we only need the song of others to remind us who we are.
The Diamond Bandeau I wear today was once a necklace gifted by the people to my ancestors. It was transformed to meet a modern era, just as we must now transform our struggles into a call for world leadership.
Let us cross this river together. Let us choose the ‘shadier route’ toward lasting security, not through isolation, but through the courage to be the chorus that awakens the world. The choice to make a name for ourselves is now in our hands.”
The Dialogue of the Crossing: A Conversation for Modern Peace

Assumpta Gahutu: “Your Royal Highness, it is a profound honor to welcome you here today. Before we begin, for our global audience joining us through the Assumpta Newsletter Publication Magazine, I am Assumpta Gahutu, Principal of Babies and Toddlers and Co-Founder of this publication. I have dedicated my life to the belief that uncompromising dialogue and intelligence are the tools needed to nurture the potential within every human being.”

Princess Catharina-Amalia: “Thank you, Assumpta. It is a pleasure to be with you. As the Princess of Orange and heir to the throne of the Netherlands, I find myself at a unique vantage point—standing between a long, storied heritage and a future of service that calls for new perspectives. I am eager to explore how ancient wisdom can illuminate the paths we must walk today.”

Assumpta Gahutu: “Your Highness, before we delve into the heart of our centerpiece, ‘The Courage to Cross the River,’ I want to touch upon the history and symbolism of the Diamond Bandeau Tiara you are wearing today. It is a piece that beautifully mirrors your own journey. In 1837, it began as a 34-diamond necklace gifted by the Dutch people to your ancestor. In 1937, it was reimagined into this modern, sleek Tiara for Crown Princess Juliana. Today, as you wear it in 2025, it marks your formal transition to full Royal Duty—your first ‘entry-level’ Tiara that signifies you have stepped into the light of your mission.”

Princess Catharina-Amalia: “It is more than jewelry to me; it is a reminder that we must take the gifts of the past and reshape them to serve the needs of the present.”

Assumpta Gahutu: “That sentiment perfectly bridges us to the Reply to Lord Yasaburo, a powerful ‘call to action’ written by Nichiren Daishonin during a moment of deep crisis. He tells Yasaburo—and by extension, he tells us—that every past struggle and the very fact that we are alive today has led us to this specific moment. To help our readers apply this, I want to break down three key themes from this writing:
- The World as a Mirror: Nichiren suggests looking at ‘this year’s world’ as a mirror. It requires Objectivity—not being swept away by fear, but using external events to understand our own mission. It also brings an Awareness of Impermanence; noting that
- hile some have died, we have survived, which emphasizes that our existence is not an accident, but a responsibility.
- The Uji and Seta Rivers: These were famous ‘make or break’ strategic crossing points in Japanese history. Once you commit to crossing, there is No Turning Back. This is the turning point that defines a life.
- Honor vs. Disgrace: This isn’t about vanity, but spiritual integrity. Winning means standing by your convictions and overcoming fear, while Disgrace is succumbing to cowardice when things get difficult.
Your Highness, the key takeaway is a shift in mindset. When the world feels overwhelmed by conflict, instead of asking ‘Why is this happening to me?’, we must ask, ‘What was I preserved for?’. It frames our struggle as the exact stage we were meant to stand upon to prove our strength.
Would you help us understand your vision? How do you apply this concept—this ‘Crossing of the River’—to the challenges the world is currently facing?”

Princess Catharina-Amalia: “Assumpta, your words resonate deeply. When I look at the world today as a mirror, I see a landscape of ‘caged birds’—people who have lost hope and believe confinement is their fate. My worldview is rooted in the belief that love is the essential power we possess to break through these differences.
To ‘cross the Uji River’ in 2025 means moving beyond the safety of silence. I see my role as joining that ‘morning chorus’ you speak of—not to unlock the cage for others, but to sing a song of courage and unity so powerful that it awakens the inner strength within every individual to free themselves. The world is preserved for us to become leaders who do not fear the struggle, but who recognize that this moment is exactly where we are meant to win our honor by serving the cause of peace.”

Assumpta Gahutu: “Your Royal Highness, your perspective on the ‘morning chorus’ is deeply moving. It reminds us that in an interconnected and living world, even one single step has multiple ramifications. In science, we might call this the quantum idea of non-locality; we live in an entangled world where nothing happens in isolation.
The end of your ancestor’s era—the woman who first wore those diamonds as a necklace—was one step, and your beginning today is another. It is a transition that will undoubtedly send reverberations throughout the Netherlands and the world.
So, my question to you is this: will your step be a dedicated service to humanity and the community, perhaps following the inspiring path of your mother, Queen Máxima? As the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate (UNSGSA) for Financial Health, she has used her background in economics and investment banking to empower women and underserved groups, ensuring they have access to secure and affordable financial services. How do you envision your own unique ‘step’ contributing to this legacy of global empowerment?”
The Final Response from Princess Catharina-Amalia

Princess Catharina-Amalia: “Assumpta, you speak of entanglement, and I feel that weight and that beauty deeply. My mother’s work is a testament to the idea that royal duty is not a static position, but an active tool for progress. She used her expertise to build bridges toward financial health, which is, in its own way, a form of ‘unlocking the cage’ for millions.
As I take my step, my focus is on Social and Spiritual Resilience. While my mother builds the financial foundations, I wish to build the human ones. I want my tenure to be defined by fostering a culture of uncompromising dialogue. In a world that is often fractured, my service will be to ensure that no one feels they are singing alone.
Just as the diamonds were once a necklace and are now a tiara, I will take the heritage of service my mother has polished and reshape it for the challenges of 2026 and beyond. My step will be toward a world where leadership is measured by how many voices we empower to join the chorus. I am ready to cross that river, knowing that my mother has already paved so much of the way.”

Assumpta Gahutu:
“Your Highness, in your speech, at its core, the message is a declaration of transition, responsibility, and collective awakening. You use history, metaphor, and symbolism to explain a moment when private identity must give way to public duty, and when societies must move from fear to shared moral action.
To break this down for our readers, your vision highlights several profound shifts:
- Crossing a Threshold: By describing a ‘threshold between the quiet protection of my heritage and the full light of public service,’ you signal a departure from sheltered preparation into full responsibility. This mirrors what societies must do when comfort is no longer enough.
- Symbolic Rivers: The Uji and Seta Rivers represent points of no return. Once crossed, inaction becomes dishonor, and courageous action becomes mandatory. Neutrality is no longer an option.
- Purposeful Survival: You suggest that survival is not accidental; those still standing have a moral obligation to act for those who cannot. If you are still here, it is because something is required of you now.
- The Bird in a Cage: This represents those trapped by ignorance or fear. Crucially, the bird already has wings. Freedom comes from within, but it is often forgotten.
- Redefined Leadership: By rejecting ‘savior’ politics, you choose participatory leadership. The ‘morning chorus’ means true freedom happens when people awaken each other—not when they are commanded.
- Love as a Political Force: You speak of love not as sentiment, but as the refusal to dehumanize. Without compassion, power is destructive; with it, power becomes legitimate.
- Transformed Tradition: The Diamond Bandeau symbolizes that history must be reshaped to serve today.
- The ‘Shadier Route’: This suggests long-term stability and cooperation over isolation and aggression.
This feels like exactly the kind of message the world needs—a time to slow down just as the birds did. They did not leave the bird in the cage behind, yet we as human beings have isolated ourselves from one another.
As you wear the Diamond Bandeau and accept your Royal Duty starting in 2026, please take this as an invitation to choose new regenerative steps for an alive future, just as Yasaburo was called to do. The future belongs to those willing to cross the river—together.”

Princess Catharina-Amalia:
“Assumpta, I accept that invitation with all my heart. To lead is to listen, and to listen is to join the song. My commitment is to ensure that the reverberations of my first steps are felt not as a command, but as a resonance that helps every person find the strength to cross their own river.”

Assumpta Gahutu: “Your Royal Highness, I cannot thank you enough for your time and for the profound depth of your spirit today. Your willingness to engage in this uncompromising dialogue brings a sense of regenerative hope to our global community. You have reminded us that while we each have our own cage, we also have our own song—and more importantly, we have each other.
As the Princess of Orange, you are stepping into a future that vibrates with the courage of those who came before you, reshaped by your own vision for peace. May your first steps into 2026 be light, yet firm, as you lead us toward that ‘morning chorus’ of collective awakening.
Closing Reflection: The Courage to Cross the River

As we conclude this centerpiece, let us all carry the Princess’s message forward into the new year. The world is indeed our mirror, and the rivers are before us. Whether we win honor or stay within the cage is a choice we make with every breath.
We survived the year to meet this moment. Let us make up our minds, cross the Uji and Seta together, and determine our names in the light of service and love.
