“How can I live true to myself when I often feel like I have to be a certain way to fit in.

Mary:
“Just as trees bloom in their own distinct way, we should strive to live authentically, embracing your natural selves. This is the essence of my behaviour and my fundamental identity – something inherent, unadulterated, and unimproved, existing just as it always has.
It is important to recognize that being true to oneself and embracing who you are is essential. Your inherent worth deserves respect without the need for pretence or false appearances, as pretending to be someone else only diminishes and weakens you.
However, it is crucial to understand the distinction between “being who you are” and “staying as you are.” If you settle for staying stagnant and resist growth, you will hinder your development and potential. By deeply contemplating your true identity and purpose in life, and by continually challenging yourself and making persistent efforts, you will witness the blossoming of your life’s mission, like a flower in full bloom.

Assumpta:
Can you elaborate on “our inherent worth deserves respect without the need for pretence or false appearances, as pretending to be someone else only diminishes and weakens you.”

Mary:
For example, my inherent worth refers to my inherent value and dignity that each individual possesses simply by being human. It is a recognition that every person has a unique set of qualities, experiences, and perspectives that contribute to their individuality and worthiness of respect.
Respecting your inherent worth means acknowledging and honouring yourself for who you truly are, without the need for pretence or false appearances. When you pretend to be someone else or put on a facade to fit societal expectations or gain approval, you deny your authentic self. This act of pretending can lead to a sense of disconnection, internal conflict, and a loss of personal power.
Moreover, pretending to be someone else diminishes and weakens you because it hinders your ability to fully express your true thoughts, emotions, and talents. It creates a barrier between your inner self and the outer world, preventing genuine connections and meaningful relationships from forming.
By embracing your authentic self and respecting your inherent worth, we give ourselves permission to be genuine, vulnerable, and true. It allows you to cultivate self-acceptance, self-love, and a sense of wholeness. Embracing your true identity not only strengthens your relationship with yourself but also empowers you to engage with the world from a place of authenticity and integrity.

Is there a faster way to become authentic, since many young people in our society are lonely and don’t know who they are?

Mary
Developing authenticity and finding oneself is a personal journey that requires introspection and self-discovery. While there may not be a shortcut to becoming authentic, there are a few things you can consider. Firstly, engage in SGI-activities where you can learn how to chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo that align with your values and interests, as this can help you explore your passions and build meaningful connections.
Additionally, seeking guidance from senior leaders in the SGI- Organisation and joining the SGI- community study group where you will be provided with valuable study materials and support along the way. Remember, the process of self-discovery takes time, and it’s important to be patient and kind to yourself throughout the journey.

Are young people in danger of becoming alienated from their communities, with the pandemic contributing to an “epidemic of loneliness?

Mary:
Yes, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the social lives of young people, leading to increased feelings of loneliness and isolation. The restrictions on social gatherings, closure of schools and colleges, and the shift to remote work and learning have disrupted the usual avenues for social interaction and community engagement. This disruption, along with the overall uncertainty and anxiety caused by the pandemic, has contributed to a higher prevalence of loneliness among young people. However, it’s worth noting that the pandemic’s impact on loneliness extends beyond just young people and affects individuals of all ages. It is important to address these challenges by fostering connections through virtual means, seeking support from friends, family, or mental health professionals, and gradually re-engaging with communities as the situation improves.

Take care of your voice: Maintain good vocal health by staying hydrated, avoiding excessive strain on your voice, and practising proper breathing techniques. Rest your voice when needed to prevent vocal fatigue or strain.
