Introduction

Davido’s songs have been favourably embraced by audiences worldwide, evoking a powerful connection that’s hard to believe—a great love inspired by music.
There’s joy and love in Davido’s melodies, whether it’s an electrifying Afrobeat anthem or a collaboration like “Blow My Mind” with Chris Brown. Each track carries a heartbeat, a soul, a connection that resonates deeply with listeners. The beats and techniques bring beautiful sounds, but beyond the rhythm, they deliver something more profound—”Joy and Love.”
Perhaps there’s something inherent like music itself, in the power of a song sung with passion, that stirs the imagination of humans.
Is it the thrill of the guitar’s strum, the pulse of the drums, or the soulful resonance of the organ? Or perhaps, it’s the seamless harmony of all these elements, bound by the spirit of the artist, that makes Davido’s music so unforgettable. Let’s discover it together.

Assumpta-Gahutu, the CEO of Assumpta News and Lifestyle Magazine and the principal of Babies and Todds Daycare is captured here sharing a beautiful and profound reflection:
“This year, we have all embraced how love and mindfulness can transform the world. A parent’s love is immeasurably profound, leaving an indelible mark on our lives. If we cherished each ordinary day with the same reverence as Christmas, our world would overflow with peace and joy. Love and peace are the essential forces that sustain our planet.” Asssumpta-Gahutu.

Dialogue Between Cookieteegh and Davido for Assumpta Weekly Magazine

Cookieteegh: Hello, Davido! It’s such an honour to have you here for this special edition of Loving, presented by Assumpta Weekly Magazine. How are you feeling today?

Davido: Hey, Cookieteegh! Thanks for having me—it’s a pleasure to be here. I’m feeling great and excited about sharing my story with everyone. Afrobeat has been such a big part of my life, and I’m grateful for platforms like this to talk about it.

Cookieteegh: Your music captivates listeners through a harmonious blend of instruments and rhythms, each contributing to your distinctive Afrobeat sound. The vibrant strum of guitars, the pulsating beats of drums, and the soulful resonance of organs intertwine seamlessly, creating an unforgettable auditory experience. This fusion is evident in tracks like “Feel” from your album Timeless, where mid-tempo rhythms are enriched with horns and saxophone riffs, showcasing your ability to blend traditional African sounds with contemporary music styles.
Such intricate layering not only highlights your musical versatility but also reflects your dedication to producing songs that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide. Could you share more about your creative process in achieving this unique sound?

Davido: Thank you for the kind words. My creative process is deeply rooted in my cultural heritage and personal experiences. I strive to create music that resonates with people on multiple levels, blending traditional African elements with modern sounds to craft something authentic and fresh. In the studio, I experiment with various instruments and rhythms, aiming to capture the essence of Afrobeat while infusing my unique style. Collaboration is also key; working with talented musicians and producers allows for a rich exchange of ideas, resulting in the intricate layering you mentioned. Ultimately, my goal is to connect with listeners worldwide, sharing the joy, love, and resilience inherent in our culture through my music.

Cookieteegh: That’s wonderful to hear! Let’s dive right in. Your journey has been nothing short of remarkable. From Atlanta, Georgia, to becoming one of the biggest Afrobeat icons in the world—what was that transition like for you?

Davido: You know, it’s been an amazing journey, but it wasn’t always easy. Growing up in Atlanta, I was surrounded by a different kind of music scene—hip-hop and R&B were the dominant sounds. I started off making beats and producing music, but I always felt like there was something missing.
When I moved to Lagos in 2011, everything changed. It was like I reconnected with my roots. The energy, the culture, the music—it was all so vibrant. That’s where I found my sound, my identity. My debut single, Back When, and later Dami Duro, really marked the beginning of my Afrobeat journey.

Cookieteegh: It’s incredible how you embraced your roots and created something so powerful. Let’s talk about what happens behind the scenes. Can you share some intimate glimpses into your personal and professional life? What keeps you grounded?

Davido: Behind the scenes, it’s a mix of chaos and magic. I’m constantly travelling, recording, and performing—it’s a lot. But my family keeps me grounded. My kids, my fiancée, and my team—they’re my backbone.
Professionally, it’s all about hard work and staying true to my vision. I spend hours in the studio perfecting every beat and lyric because I know my fans deserve the best. But at the same time, I make sure to take moments to breathe, reflect, and just enjoy life.

Cookieteegh: That balance comes through in your music—it’s joyful yet meaningful. Afrobeat has become a global movement, connecting people across cultures. What does that mean to you as an artist?

Davido: It means everything to me. Afrobeat is more than just music—it’s a celebration of who we are as Africans. It’s about love, resilience, and unity. When I see people from different countries vibing to my songs, it reminds me that music truly is a universal language.
It’s not just about me—it’s about representing the culture and opening doors for the next generation of artists. That’s why I keep pushing boundaries, collaborating with international artists, and spreading the Afrobeat message.

Cookieteegh: Your passion is so inspiring. Speaking of collaborations, your work with Chris Brown on Blow My Mind was a massive hit. How do you approach these cross-cultural projects?

Davido: With an open mind and a lot of respect. Collaborating with someone like Chris Brown was a dream come true because he understands music at such a deep level. We didn’t just make a song—we created a vibe that resonated with people everywhere.
When I work with international artists, it’s about finding common ground while staying true to Afrobeat. It’s beautiful to blend different sounds and cultures into something unique.

Cookieteegh: It truly is! Lastly, what should fans expect from this special edition of Loving?

Davido: My music connects people through the knowledge of the good and bad experiences life has offered me.
I spend more and more time improving my songs before they come out just because I want my listeners to understand the message I put across. It’s like I represent a book and transmit knowledge that should not be taken for granted. That is how I share knowledge with my listeners, my nation, the world, and my community.
Under the influence of music, “No African is left behind.”
This is my story, but it’s also a celebration of the culture and the people who’ve supported me every step of the way.

Cookieteegh: That sounds amazing! Thank you so much, Davido, for sharing your journey and insights with us. We can’t wait for everyone to experience Loving.

Davido: Thank you, Cookieteegh! And big thanks to Assumpta Weekly Magazine for this platform. Afrobeat to the world!
