✉️ Editor’s Note
There comes a moment when we begin to question the way we understand life—its rhythms, its struggles, and its beauty. What if everything we have been taught about pain and joy is only part of a deeper truth?
This month, IMAGINE – Works From The Heart invites you into a powerful reflection rooted in music, emotion, and the philosophy of living fully. At the core of this issue lies a simple, yet transformative idea:
Suffer what there is to suffer. Enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life—and continue creating value, no matter what happens.
This is not just a statement—it is a way of life.
🎶 Cover Story: Beyond the Artist
In this edition, we explore the untapped potential and evolving identity of Ayra Starr. Known globally for her paradigm-shifting sound in Afrobeats, she represents far more than artistry—she represents a distinct way of thinking, feeling, and becoming.
For too long, the narrative of struggle has been told by those who admire strength from afar, yet fail to see the shared humanity beneath it. Strength is celebrated, but the raw emotions, questions, and uncertainties that shape it are often overlooked.
This issue challenges that narrative. It calls us to look deeper—beyond expectations, beyond labels, and beyond surface perception.
Who is Ayra Starr, truly?
- A teacher of emotional truth?
- A philosopher hidden within melody?
- Or simply an artist whose honesty resonates across the world?
Perhaps she is all of these—and more.
🌊 Theme Reflection: Lessons from Colorado
Inspired by the emotional depth of her hit track “Colorado,” this issue explores the rhythm of life itself—uncertain, layered, and ever-changing. Like the song, life carries moments of longing, waves of vulnerability, and emotional storms that refuse to be ignored.
Yet, within these experiences lies something powerful: the ability to transform pain into beauty, confusion into wisdom, and emotion into art.
Afrobeats reminds us that rhythm is not born in perfect conditions; it emerges from movement, from struggle, from life as it is. To live courageously is not to escape discomfort, but to move through it with dignity, openness, and creativity.

The IMAGINE – Works From The Heart Interview
In this special edition, we present an exclusive and intimate conversation that promises to redefine how you view Ayra Starr. Ghana’s premier voice, Cookieteegh Shirley, sits down with the artist for a moment of rare reflection, depth, and truth.
Together, they explore:
- Identity & Growth: Navigating meteoric global fame while protecting the inner self.
- Creativity & Vulnerability: The lived experience of a young African voice rewriting global culture.
- The Mindset: The underlying philosophy that keeps her grounded in the midst of the industry whirlwind.
This is not just an interview. It is a conversation that peels back the layers—revealing the thinker behind the rhythm.
✨ Why This Issue Matters
This edition goes far beyond standard music journalism. It serves as an intentional blueprint for:
- Understanding life through the duality of emotion and experience.
- Redefining strength as a delicate balance of vulnerability and courage.
- Embracing creativity as an active response to life—not an escape from it.
It reminds us that we do not need perfect conditions to begin. We only need the willingness to feel, to reflect, and to create.
🔔 Final Word
As you prepare to open this issue, remember: Life is not meant to be avoided—it is meant to be experienced. Fully. Honestly. Courageously.
And within that experience lies the greatest lesson of all: That we can all create beauty, even in the midst of the storm.
🎤 THE IMAGINE – WORKS FROM THE HEART INTERVIEW
Ayra Starr — A Philosopher in Rhythm

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
Good day to our distinguished readers around the world.
Wherever you are joining us from—across Africa, Europe, the Americas, and beyond—we welcome you to another global edition of IMAGINE – Works From The Heart.
Today, we gather not just to listen, but to reflect, to feel, and to explore the deeper rhythms that shape our lives.
And to you, Ayra Starr—welcome. It is truly an honor to have you with us in this dialogue.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
Ayra Starr, we are delighted to welcome you to this global conversation and to introduce you once again to our international readership—not only as an artist, but as a voice of depth, influence, and evolving meaning.
You are a global Afrobeat musician whose presence continues to shape the sound and direction of contemporary music. And while “Colorado” is not tied to a single narrative or individual, it resonates alongside the broader Afrobeat ecosystem—where collaboration and shared influence with artists such as Johnny Drille and Young Jonn enrich the cultural landscape.
Yet, beyond the sound, beyond the rhythm, and beyond the melody—your work reveals something deeper.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
When we truly listen to “Colorado,” when we take the time to break down its message, it becomes clear that what you have created goes far beyond a love song.
It positions you—perhaps unexpectedly—as a philosopher of human experience.
- A philosopher of emotional truth.
- Of perspective.
- Of vulnerability.
- Of healing.
And in that space, you stand as a leading African female voice—one that not only expresses but also opens doors, creating pathways for many Afrobeat artists across Africa and the world.
Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
This brings us to the heart of today’s theme:
A Philosopher in Rhythm
Lessons from Colorado — Through Storms and Rhymes, We Can Find Beauty in the Struggle
What if the way we understand life… has only scratched the surface?
This issue explores your evolving identity—not just as a global chart-topper, but as a voice shaping a new perspective on resilience, emotion, and what it means to live fully.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
As we listen to “Colorado,” we encounter a story that reflects the complexity of being human.
At first, it feels like love—simple, uplifting, transformative.
The idea of being “high like Colorado” becomes more than a metaphor. It becomes a state of elevation—a moment where love expands us, lifts us, and allows us to feel beyond our limits.
In that space, you show us that love is not passive—it is energizing, immersive, and deeply transformative.
But then, almost quietly, another layer unfolds.
Questions emerge:
- “Tell me wetin I do?”
- “Ṣe you get another someone?”
And suddenly, we are face-to-face with uncertainty. With fear. With vulnerability.
You remind us that the deeper we love, the more we risk. That attachment carries within it the possibility of loss—and yet, we continue anyway.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
What stands out most is your openness.
You do not hide emotion—you embrace it.
You show us that to be vulnerable is not to be weak, but to be courageous. That to love deeply is to accept risk, and that risk itself becomes a form of strength.
At the same time, you challenge perfection—rejecting materialism, rejecting appearances, and reminding us that connection is not built on status, but on authenticity.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
And perhaps most powerfully, “Colorado” refuses to separate joy from pain.
It allows both to exist:
- Joy and longing
- Hope and doubt
- Fulfillment and unease
It reflects life—not as a single emotion, but as a coexistence of many.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
And this is where the deeper lesson begins to reveal itself.
That we cannot avoid vulnerability. We cannot eliminate uncertainty. We cannot experience joy without risking pain.
Growth, in its truest form, emerges from learning how to move through these tensions.
And so, the philosophy becomes clear: Life is not defined by the absence of storms, but by our ability to find meaning, beauty, and growth within them.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host) — Final Question
So Ayra, let me bring this reflection to you.
Seen from this perspective, you are not simply telling a love story.
Are you, through your music, illustrating a universal human journey—one that involves:
- Loving deeply
- Facing uncertainty
- Embracing imperfection
- And continuing forward despite emotional risk?
And more importantly—is it within that very journey that you use your music to transform people… guiding them toward something more meaningful, more reflective, and ultimately more constructive in the way they see themselves and the world?

Ayra Starr — A Philosopher in Rhythm

Ayra Starr (Response)
On Music, Purpose, and Awakening
Thank you so much for that reflection—it’s powerful to hear my music interpreted in such a deep and thoughtful way.
I think, for me, everything really starts with honesty. When I’m creating, I’m not necessarily trying to define a philosophy or explain life in clear terms. I’m simply expressing what I feel in real time—the confusion, the love, the vulnerability, the questions. But I’ve come to realize that when you are honest enough, those personal emotions begin to reflect something universal.
So yes, in a way, it becomes more than a love story. It becomes a journey. A journey of feeling deeply, of questioning, of learning, and of growing through those experiences.
There’s something important I’ve come to believe: Many people see Afrobeats as entertainment, but I believe music can be much more than that. Throughout human history, artists, storytellers, and musicians have always helped people make sense of life—its joys, its struggles, its contradictions.
And that’s what inspires me.
I’m drawn to the idea that music can awaken something within us.
Because no matter where we come from, we all experience similar things—love, loss, disappointment, hope, growth, change. Those emotions connect us in ways that go beyond language or culture.
For me, music is never just about success or recognition. It’s about truth. It’s about connection. It’s about creating something that allows people to pause and reflect—even if just for a moment.
Songs have a way of reaching people in spaces where words alone sometimes cannot. They can comfort you, challenge you, or even shift how you see yourself and your life.
And when it comes to a song like “Colorado,” I wasn’t trying to separate joy from pain, or clarity from confusion—because in real life, they don’t exist separately.
- You can love someone and still feel unsure.
- You can feel happy and still carry fear.
- You can be strong and still be vulnerable.
That duality is real. And I think that’s what makes the experience human.
So when you ask if I’m illustrating a universal journey—loving deeply, facing uncertainty, embracing imperfection—I would say yes, but not in a calculated way. It’s simply the truth of what it means to feel. And I think music, when it’s real, naturally captures that.
As an artist, I try to be intentional about that truth. I want my music to speak to the human experience—the struggles we face, the lessons we learn, and the strength we discover along the way. Not as something distant or perfect, but as something real and evolving.
And if, through that honesty, people find meaning… if they find comfort, or clarity, or even just the courage to feel more deeply—then that means everything to me.
Because at its best, music does more than entertain. It helps us become more aware… more compassionate… and more alive to the beauty and complexity of life.
🎤 THE IMAGINE – WORKS FROM THE HEART INTERVIEW
Ayra Starr — A Philosopher in Rhythm

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
Ayra, thank you for that—truly.
Your response carries a depth that goes beyond music. There is a sense of intention, awareness, and emotional clarity in the way you speak about your craft. It’s rare, and it’s powerful.
Listening to you, one begins to understand why your work resonates so widely—not just as sound, but as something that feels lived, experienced, and deeply human.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
And that leads me to this question—one that many of our readers around the world may already be reflecting on:
Is this why you are often perceived, or even described, as “The Philosopher in Rhythm”?
Is it because your music does not simply entertain, but invites people to think, to feel, and to confront parts of themselves they may not always acknowledge?

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
And beyond that—I’d like to understand something more personal.
What truly drove you to continue pursuing music? Was it always clear to you that this would be your path?
Or was there a defining moment—an experience, a realization, or even a challenge—that pushed you to stay committed to your voice, your sound, and your purpose despite the uncertainties that come with this journey?
🎤 THE IMAGINE – WORKS FROM THE HEART INTERVIEW
Ayra Starr — A Philosopher in Rhythm

Ayra Starr (Response)
Thank you so much—that question really means a lot to me.
I don’t know if I deliberately set out to become “The Philosopher in Rhythm,” but I understand why people might see it that way. For me, it’s never been about trying to teach or to define things too clearly—it’s about expressing truth as honestly as I can. If that honesty makes people reflect, question, or understand themselves a little more, then maybe that’s where the philosophy comes in.
Because at the end of the day, real music makes you feel—but it also makes you think.
When I reflect on what truly drove me to continue pursuing music, it goes much deeper than passion alone. It came from what I saw growing up. I am from Benin, in Africa, and there were moments—real, raw moments—where I witnessed the struggles around me. The reality of people trying to survive, trying to find joy in the middle of difficulty… it stayed with me.
It made me ask myself a question that has never really left me:
“What can I do to make others happy?”
That question became a kind of turning point for me. Music became my answer. It wasn’t just something I enjoyed—it became something purposeful.
With the help of my brothers, we started writing songs, experimenting, performing wherever we could. It was simple at first, but it was honest. And in that honesty, I began to see the impact—even in small ways.
That’s when I doubled down. Not just on music as a career, but on music as a responsibility. Because I realized that even in difficult circumstances, people still look for something—something to hold onto, something that lifts them, even for a moment.
And music can do that.
- It can bring light into heavy spaces.
- It can remind people that they are not alone.
- It can carry emotion when words feel insufficient.
So my journey has always been driven by that awareness. Not just creating for the sake of creating, but creating with intention—knowing that somewhere, someone might hear a song and feel understood, or comforted, or seen. And that matters to me.
In that sense, the growth as a musician is not just technical or professional—it’s emotional, it’s human. It’s about learning how to communicate more truthfully. How to express more clearly. How to connect more deeply.
So yes, if people hear something philosophical in my music, I think it comes from that place—from lived experience, from observation, and from a genuine desire to turn feeling into something meaningful.
Because for me, music is not separate from life. It is life—translated into rhythm.
🎤 THE IMAGINE – WORKS FROM THE HEART INTERVIEW

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
Ayra, thank you for sharing that—it was deeply grounding and inspiring.
You’ve spoken beautifully about your roots, your purpose, and the emotional depth behind your music. But beyond the sound—there is also something equally powerful in how you move.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
Afrobeats today is not only heard—it is seen, felt, and experienced through dance.
From Africa to Europe, and across the Americas, we’ve watched how Afrobeat culture has traveled globally, influencing not just music, but movement itself. There’s a unique energy in African dance—one that carries both freedom and storytelling.
In your performances, there’s a particular style that stands out.
- It’s expressive yet controlled…
- Playful yet intentional…
The movement of the hands, the subtle shaking of the waist, the gentle steps forward and back—it feels organic, almost like the body is responding directly to the rhythm rather than following choreography. And in many ways, it has helped people connect more deeply with Afrobeat, making the experience more immersive and accessible to global audiences.

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
So I’d love to explore that part of your artistry.
Can you tell us more about this dance style—how it came about, what it represents to you, and whether it was something you consciously developed or something that naturally evolved from your connection to music and your African roots?
🎤 THE IMAGINE – WORKS FROM THE HEART INTERVIEW
Ayra Starr — A Philosopher in Rhythm

Ayra Starr (Response)
Dance, for me, is never an afterthought. It is simply the physical translation of the rhythm. In Afrobeats, music and movement are born from the same umbilical cord; you cannot truly have one without the other.
When you describe it as organic, that is because it comes from a place of pure feeling rather than rigid structure. Growing up in Benin and Nigeria, dance isn’t just something you learn in a studio—it’s a social language. It’s how we celebrate, how we protest, and how we release energy. So when I am on stage, my body is just reacting to what the music is doing to my spirit.
I didn’t sit down to consciously manufacture a specific global dance style. Instead, it naturally evolved from a mix of my African roots and the contemporary energies I absorb as a young woman navigating the world today.
- The hands are about storytelling and guidance—they draw the audience into my space.
- The waist and the steps are about grounding—retaining that raw, traditional African center gravity while keeping the energy modern and free.
It is playful because life requires a certain lightness to survive, but it is intentional because every movement carries weight.
To our international readers, what I want you to understand is that African dance is an open invitation. It’s designed to be accessible because rhythm belongs to everyone. When people across the Americas, Europe, or Asia mirror these movements, they aren’t just copying choreography—they are tapping into a collective human frequency of joy and resilience.
It’s another way of proving that our stories, no matter how localized they start, are universally understood when translated through rhythm.
🎤 THE IMAGINE – WORKS FROM THE HEART INTERVIEW

Cookieteegh Shirley (Host)
Ayra, your words carry a profound weight that forces us to look beyond the surface of global stardom. In this sense, what had become a bleak phase for Afrobeats has been transformed into a bright and hopeful future through your intentionality.
