The Nigerian Reality: Beyond Policy to People
The statement, “Prosperity is built not just by policies, but by people who genuinely care for one another,” directly addresses the core paradox of modern Nigeria. While the nation is rich in human and natural resources and boasts countless government policies and initiatives, widespread challenges like poverty and inequality persist.
1. The Shortfall of Policies (The “Not Just By Policies” Part)
Nigeria has had numerous comprehensive national plans and economic policies over the decades aimed at development. However, the positive impact is often limited due to factors stemming from human failure:
- Corruption and Mismanagement: Even the most brilliantly written policies (e.g., poverty alleviation, infrastructure projects) can fail because the funds or resources intended for them are diverted or misused. This systemic lack of integrity, or the failure of people to “genuinely care” for the public good, directly sabotages policy effectiveness.
- Political Instability and Ethnic Bias: Policies that should benefit all citizens often become tools for political patronage or are implemented to disproportionately favor one ethnic or religious group over others. This absence of genuine, universal care fuels resentment and deepens existing divisions, making national prosperity impossible to achieve collectively.
2. The Power of People (The “Built by People Who Genuinely Care” Part)
In the absence of consistent, effective governance, Nigerians have historically relied on their social capital—the strength of community and personal initiative—to survive and thrive. This is where the principle of “genuine care” truly builds resilience and prosperity:
- Bridging the Gaps in Social Services: When public services fail (e.g., healthcare, education, security), local communities, NGOs, and individuals often step in. For example, local philanthropists building schools or providing scholarships, or neighbors forming vigilance groups to address insecurity—these are acts of prosperity built by people caring for their immediate community.
- The Informal Economy and Gives Back: Much of Nigeria’s real economic activity happens in the informal sector, driven by personal networks, trust, and shared risk. Icons like Hilda Baci are examples of using personal success and visibility to generate social good, employment, and hope that extends beyond their individual businesses—they are using their hands to serve a greater purpose.
- Unity Against Division: The challenges Hilda Baci highlighted—rising theft, religious tension, and inequality—are all symptoms of a breakdown in communal care. By promoting shared meals and shared culture, she is demonstrating that friendship replacing suspicion (genuine care) is the foundational policy needed to lower the barriers that allow poverty and insecurity to thrive.
Ultimately, for Nigeria, genuine care translates into accountability, integrity, and prioritizing the collective well-being of the diverse populace above self-interest, tribe, or faction. It is the ethical engine that makes good policies work.

”Your dream is for a Nigeria where Friendship replaces suspicion and Unity replaces rivalry.”
”Hilda, we highlight that the key challenges for Nigeria stem from these very issues, and after years of political turmoil, the first priority is to restore trust in both citizens, politicians, and governance mechanisms.”
”Welcome, Hilda. What’s your perspective or opinion on the article title, ‘A Recipe For Nigeria’s Future: Beyond the Kitchen’?”
A Dialogue for Change: Hilda Baci’s Response
Hilda Baci (Nigeria):
”Frema, thank you so much for that incredibly powerful introduction, and a warm greeting to all Assumpta Weekly News Magazine readers around the world. It’s a genuine honour to be here and to speak on something far more important than any recipe I’ve ever created.”
”My perspective on the title, ‘A Recipe For Nigeria’s Future: Beyond the Kitchen,’ is that it’s perfectly accurate, and intentionally challenging. For a long time, I was happy to use my kitchen to celebrate our rich culture. But the truth is, you can’t fully celebrate when the house is burning. The issues you listed—poverty, insecurity, and political tension—they are the bitter ingredients that contaminate our national dish.”
”The title is a call to action because it tells Nigerians and the world that my platform is no longer just for culinary entertainment. The ‘Recipe for Nigeria’s Future’ isn’t about jollof rice; it’s about the ethical ingredients we choose to put into our society. The ‘Beyond the Kitchen’ part means that every single Nigerian, from the politician to the street vendor, has a responsibility to shift their focus from self-interest to shared service.”
”We can have the best economic policies on paper, Frema, but if the people implementing them—or the people whose cooperation is needed—are driven by greed, tribalism, or indifference, the policy will fail. That is why I believe so deeply that ‘Prosperity is built not just by policies, but by people who genuinely care for one another.’ This genuine care is the missing ingredient we need to restore the trust you mentioned. Once we choose love, dignity, and togetherness, everything else, from security to the economy, can begin to heal.”
Frema-Adunyame (Ghana):
”That is a profound and deeply honest response, Hilda. You’ve placed the accountability squarely back on the people. Let’s focus on that core principle of ‘genuine care.’ Many citizens feel overwhelmed, powerless against the system. When you say, ‘Every meal I serve is an act of service,’ how does that connect to the huge problems of insecurity and crushing economic inequality? How does a plate of food spark peace when villages are suppressed and people are starving?”
The Link Between Service and National Crises
Hilda Baci (Nigeria):
”That is the crucial question, Frema, and it goes to the heart of why I’ve shifted my message. People feel powerless because they focus on the scale of the problems—millions in poverty, thousands displaced by insecurity. Solving those requires resources and policy, yes, but those large systems are built on micro-interactions.”
1. Fighting Economic Inequality with Dignity
”When I say every meal I serve is an act of service, I’m talking about restoring dignity. Crushing economic inequality makes people feel invisible and disposable. When I prepare food, whether for a client or for a large community outreach, it is prepared with intention and responsibility. It says: ‘You matter. You deserve quality.’“
- The Model of Effort: My principle, ‘Establishing her clients’ happiness… by her own hands,’ highlights that true economic transformation must be rooted in ethical effort and personal integrity. If every business, every civil servant, every market seller operated with that level of genuine care and commitment to the person they are serving, it would immediately stamp out the transactional dishonesty that fuels petty corruption and widens the inequality gap.
- Empowerment: When people realize they can create value and happiness through their own honest efforts, they stop waiting for policies and start building their own prosperity.
2. Connecting Care to Combating Insecurity
”Insecurity—the rising theft and religious tension—is essentially a result of broken trust and failed community. In a society where people genuinely care, they become their neighbour’s keeper. Insecurity thrives in the dark corners created by suspicion and rivalry.”
- Shared Meals, Shared Humanity: Food is the great equalizer. When people sit down to share a meal, the tribal lines, the religious differences, and the political arguments momentarily fade. That shared space fosters the Friendship that replaces suspicion. This isn’t just theory; it’s anthropology. By promoting a ‘Shared Table,’ we are restoring the basic human bond that makes a community willing to protect itself, not just from external threats, but from internal breakdown.
- Giving Voice: Suppressed villages feel they have no voice because the official channels of care have failed them. When an influential figure uses their platform, as I am doing now, to articulate their pain and highlight their reality, we are essentially serving them a plate of recognition and support. This is a direct act of genuine care that helps restore faith and spark peace, proving that some people do still care.
”Ultimately, Frema, you cannot legislate genuine care, but you can demonstrate it. And that demonstration is the only sustainable way to build trust, reduce insecurity, and create a truly prosperous economic climate.”
Frema-Adunyame (Ghana):
”Hilda, that is incredibly powerful. You’ve reframed the entire national conversation. You’ve essentially taken the failure of governance and policy and placed the immediate solution—the ‘genuine care’ and ‘dignity’—into the hands of every citizen.”
”The analogy of using your kitchen to foster dignity and shared humanity as a way to combat the hopelessness that drives insecurity and poverty is not just inspiring; it’s a tangible, actionable philosophy. It brings the monumental task of national transformation down to the level of personal responsibility and community integrity.”
”You’ve given us the crucial link: that before we can fix the policies, we must fix the moral compass of the people involved, and that starts with the simple act of truly caring for the person right in front of you.”
”Now, let’s turn our attention to the media’s role. As a media practitioner, I see how easily suspicion and rivalry are fueled by misinformation and divisive narratives, which you hope to replace with friendship and unity. For our global readers, who are deeply interested in the stability of West Africa:”
”How can the media, and specifically platforms like the Assumpta Weekly News Magazine, best support this ‘Recipe for Nigeria’s Future’? What role should we play in shifting the narrative from crisis and division to one of unity and genuine care?”
Hilda’s Response: The Media’s Role in National Healing.
Hilda Baci (Nigeria):
”Frema, that’s an essential question. The media’s role, especially in Africa right now, is perhaps the most critical component in shifting the narrative. If my cooking is about feeding the stomach and the soul, the media is about feeding the mind with the right information.”
1. Prioritizing Genuine Care Over Crisis
”Right now, the media often operates on a model that prioritizes sensationalism and crisis—it focuses on the ‘burn’ because that sells. That constant focus on religious tension, political squabbles, and economic collapse, while important, often drowns out the quiet, consistent efforts of genuine care happening on the ground. It fosters that sense of being overwhelmed and powerless.”
- The Media’s New ‘Menu’: The media needs to consciously shift its focus. Instead of solely chasing the narrative of rivalry and suspicion, you must equally and prominently spotlight the stories of fri
