The Power of Compassion in Journalism:

“Compassion is rooted in respect for the inherent dignity of life, our own and others’âand a desire to see that dignity triumph.”

Serwaa Amihere:
“A Buddhist friend of mine once told me that true compassion is not sentimentality or mere pity. It is empowerment. It is about believing in peopleâs potential and ensuring they have the tools to thrive.”
As a journalist, my mission has always been to inform, educate, and uplift. But in the course of my work, I realized that many Ghanaians unknowingly rely on products made with toxic and harmful materialsâcompromising their health and well-being. Thatâs when I knew I had to do more than just report the news.
I entered the world of advocacy and ethical advertising to ensure that the products we use every dayâwhat we cook with, what we clean with, what we wear and furnish our homes withâare safe, healthy, and of the highest quality.
This is not just business. This is a movement.

Many people around the world say that Ghana and Africa are emerging as the next significant marketplaces because they recognize the excellence within us.
They see influential figures like author Owusuaa-Gyimah Addo and actress-philanthropist Joselyn Dumas commanding the stageâachievements that resonate deeply with my mission as a journalist to inform, educate, and uplift Ghanaians, which is incredibly encouraging.
I hold Gwen Owusuaa-Gyimah Addo and Joselyn Dumas in high regard for their compassion, courage, and integrity; I never take their efforts for granted. My career as a journalist is vital because I strive to deliver accurate information to my people, drawing on my background as a journalist to engage and inspire. I have passionately refined my approach to spotlight essential everyday productsâranging from food, spices, clothing, and detergents to Flora hygiene tissues and childrenâs products.
Many of these daily essentials are imported into our country, and our citizens often use them without knowing their true composition. Thatâs why I have pioneered an innovative advertising strategy to thoroughly evaluate these imported products and eliminate any toxic elements, ensuring the health and well-being of Ghanaians. This, I believe, is true innovation.

Dialogue Between Cookieteegh & Serwaa Amihere:

đ¤ Hosted by Cookieteegh | Featuring Serwaa Amihere
Opening the Dialogue

Cookieteegh: “Good evening, Ghana! Welcome to this special edition of Assumpta Weekly Lifestyle & News Magazine, where we donât just report the newsâwe ignite change. And today, I have the absolute pleasure of speaking with a woman who embodies truth, integrity, and action. Sheâs not just a journalist; sheâs a movement. Ladies and gentlemen, letâs give a warm welcome to the one and only Serwaa Amihere!“

Serwaa Amihere: “Thank you so much, Cookieteegh! Itâs an honor to be here, and Iâm truly excited for this conversation.”
The Journalistâs Awakening to a Hidden Crisis

Cookieteegh: “Serwaa, youâve built a reputation for asking the tough questions, for holding power to account. But this time, it wasnât a politician or a corporate giant you were questioningâit was the very products we use every day. Take us back to that moment. When did you realize that something was seriously wrong with the everyday essentials Ghanaians rely on?”

Serwaa Amihere: “Cookieteegh, it was a defining moment in my career. As journalists, we uncover hidden truths, but this was personal. I started investigating the everyday products we cook with, clean with, and wear, and I was shocked at what I found. Many of these itemsâimported in large quantitiesâcontained toxic chemicals, carcinogens, and harmful substances that pose serious health risks.”
“What struck me most was that even the Ministry of Trade and industry :
In Ghana, and other regulators who control imported household products fall under multiple ministries and regulatory agencies, including:
- Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI) â Oversees trade policies, import regulations, and consumer protection laws related to household products.
- Ministry of Health (MoH) â Works alongside regulatory bodies to ensure imported products meet health and safety standards.
- Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) â Responsible for setting and enforcing quality standards for imported and locally manufactured goods, including household products.
- Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) â Regulates and ensures the safety of household consumables such as cleaning agents, cosmetics, and personal care products.
- Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) â Customs Division â Enforces import duties and ensures compliance with product regulations at ports of entry.
had not taken responsibility to address this crisis. The information was there, the risks were clear, but no action was being taken. Thatâs when I realizedâI couldnât just report the news. I had to step in and innovate.”
A Journalist Becomes an Innovator:

Cookieteegh: “Thatâs powerful. You saw a gapâwhere institutions failed to actâand instead of waiting for change, you became the change. But Serwaa, you didnât just stop at exposing the truth. You took a bold step into a whole new industry: advertising. Why advertising?”use

Serwaa Amihere: “Because advertising is power. It shapes what we buy, what we trust, and ultimately, what we consume. I realized that if I wanted to protect Ghanaians from harmful products, I had to go beyond exposing the problemâI had to introduce the solution.”
“So, I entered the world of ethical advertisingânot to sell just any products, but to curate and promote essentials that are safe, high-quality, and truly beneficial to our people. I wanted to ask the questions the manufacturers werenât asking: Whatâs really inside our spices? Are our household cleaning products safe? What kind of diapers are we putting on our babies?”
“And if a product didnât meet the highest standards? I wouldnât touch it. This isnât just businessâitâs about protecting lives.”
Exposing the Dark Side of Imported Goods

Cookieteegh: “And letâs talk about those imported goods. Serwaa, Ghana, like many African countries, has become heavily dependent on foreign products. But most consumers have no idea what theyâre bringing into their homes. What are some of the most alarming discoveries you made?”

Serwaa Amihere: “Where do I even begin? The level of neglect is shocking. Here are just a few examples:”
â
Cooking spices filled with excessive preservatives and synthetic chemicals, which can cause long-term health issues.
â
Baby diapers containing harmful bleaching agents, leading to skin irritation and rashes in infants.
â
Washing soaps with undisclosed industrial-grade chemicals that damage both skin and the environment.
â
Furniture made with toxic adhesives, releasing fumes that can cause respiratory problems over time.
“And whatâs worse? These products flood our markets without proper scrutiny. They enter Ghana legally, but with no accountability. Meanwhile, our locally-made, safer alternatives struggle to get the same recognition and support.”
The Shift Toward Ethical Consumerism:

Cookieteegh: “So thatâs what led to Everyday Essentialsâyour movement to promote products that serve the people, rather than harm them. Tell us about the brands youâve partnered with and why they stand out.”

Serwaa Amihere: “Absolutely! I wanted to give Ghanaians a better choiceâproducts that are genuinely safe and beneficial. Thatâs why I carefully curated the Everyday Essentials lineup. Each of these brands represents quality, sustainability, and ethical production:
đ Flora Organic Diapers & Tissues â Free from harsh chemicals, gentle on babies, and eco-friendly.
đ Sankofa Cooking Spices â Authentic Ghanaian flavors, made without toxic preservatives.
đ Tango Washing Soaps â Powerful on stains, yet safe for skin and the environment.
đ Kitea Household Furniture â Locally crafted, toxin-free, and built to last.
“These are more than just products. They symbolize a shiftâa movement towards ethical consumerism, where Ghanaians donât have to compromise their health for convenience.”
Holding Leaders Accountable

Cookieteegh: “Serwaa, youâve taken a bold stance. Youâre challenging the status quo, calling out negligence, and pushing for accountability. Have you faced any resistance?”

Serwaa Amihere: “Oh! When you shake a system that profits from deception, expect pushback. Some companies see me as a threat because Iâm exposing what theyâd rather keep hidden. But I remind themâI am not against business; I am for ethical business. If your product is safe, it should have nothing to fear.”
“And to policymakersâthis is a wake-up call. The Ministry of Health cannot afford to be silent anymore. We need stricter regulations, better product testing, and transparency in our consumption. Ghanaians deserve better.”
A Call to Action: Be Part of the Movement:

Cookieteegh: “Serwaa, this is more than a campaignâitâs a revolution. How can Ghanaians join you in this fight for healthier, safer everyday essentials?”

Serwaa Amihere:
â
Stay Informed â Read Assumpta Weekly Lifestyle & News Magazine and learn the truth.
â
Make Conscious Choices â Support ethical brands and reject harmful products.
â
Hold Brands Accountable â Demand transparency from the companies selling to us.
â
Advocate for Change â Urge leaders to enforce stronger product safety regulations.
“And most importantlyâspeak up. If you suspect a product is harmful, question it. If a company refuses to disclose its ingredients, challenge them. Because when consumers unite, industries are forced to change.”
Closing the Dialogue:

Cookieteegh: “Serwaa, tonight, you havenât just informed usâyouâve empowered us. This is how journalism should be. This is how advocacy should look. And this is how Ghana rises. Thank you for your fearless leadership.”

Serwaa Amihere: “Thank you, Cookieteegh. And to everyone listeningâremember, change starts with awareness, but it only happens with action. Letâs build a healthier, safer, and more empowered Ghana, together.”
