Mark your calendars and join us!
Is TikTok a National Security Threat – or a Smokescreen for Superpower Rivalry?
If TikTok is deemed a national security threat by the US, it’s difficult to imagine other Western nations like the UK reaching a different conclusion. The core fear is that the Chinese-owned app could allow sensitive user data to fall into the hands of China’s ruling Communist Party.
Yet, the political spectacle surrounding TikTok points to something more complex. Former President Donald Trump’s inconsistent stance on the app – oscillating between threats of banning it and pushing for its partial sale to a US company – underscores the influence of geopolitics and economic leverage. This isn’t just about security; it’s about power and control in an era where data rules the world.
Data: The New Oil
The debate over TikTok highlights a deeper truth: data has become the new oil of the digital economy. It powers innovation, drives growth, and shapes global power dynamics. The US push for TikTok to sell its operations underscores the immense value placed on controlling data.
The data we leave behind – our digital footprints – has become the ultimate currency, the new gold. Why? Because data feeds AI algorithms, making them smarter, faster, and more efficient. These technologies, in turn, generate unprecedented wealth for companies and governments, driving the geopolitical struggle over platforms like TikTok.
AI and the Technological Revolution
We are living through an autonomous technological revolution, where AI is transforming lives at an exponential rate. The fundamental goal of technology remains to reduce costs – financial, labour, and time – to achieve more with less.
Consider the evolution of computation:
Before the advent of machines, humans (mostly women) worked as “computers,” performing complex calculations manually. The development of digital computers eliminated this labour, drastically reducing costs and revolutionizing productivity. Today, AI extends this progress further, automating tasks once thought to be inherently human.
The Bigger Picture
As AI evolves, the value of data will only grow. The TikTok debate is more than a question of social media or security; it is a battle over control of the most valuable resource of our time: data.
But beyond data lies a larger issue: our unhealthy obsession with the abstract concept of wealth – currency.
The Worship of Currency and Its Consequences

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu, CEO of Assumpta Newsletters Publications and principal of Babies and Toddlers Daycare, highlights the deeper crisis underlying these geopolitical struggles. The dominance of speculative financial assets – estimated to be four times the global GDP – reflects a dangerous fixation on wealth as an abstraction, devoid of connection to real goods or services.
Currency itself has no inherent value; its worth lies solely in exchange. The financial markets have severed it from tangible realities, creating a world where the pursuit of wealth is unbound by any real or natural limits. This obsession, as French philosopher Gabriel Marcel described, is a “spirit of abstraction” – a destructive process that alienates us from concrete realities and values.
The worship of money goes beyond material desire. It captivates and ensnares, pushing societies into behaviours they might otherwise avoid. This fixation exacerbates global inequality, destabilizes labour markets, and fuels environmental destruction. It has become evident that blind faith in free competition and unregulated markets to solve all problems was misplaced. The world’s challenges cannot be addressed by economic mechanisms alone.
A Call for Humanitarian Competition
In this era of data wars and technological revolutions, it is imperative to move beyond the worship of money and the abstraction of wealth. Instead, we must focus on creating systems of humanitarian competition that prioritize equity, sustainability, and the well-being of society.
The TikTok debate may appear to be about national security, but it reflects a much larger battle over values, priorities, and the future of our interconnected world. The question is not just who controls the data – but what kind of world we wish to build with it.
Dialogue Between Nana Ama McBrown and Ms. Assumpta Gahutu
Nana Ama McBrown:
Good evening, viewers! Welcome to Onua-TV, where we bring you in-depth conversations on the issues shaping our world today. I’m your host, Nana Ama McBrown, and I’m thrilled to have a very special guest with us this evening—Ms. Assumpta Gahutu, the visionary CEO of Assumpta Newsletters Publications and principal of Babies and Toddlers Daycare. Ms. Gahutu, welcome to the show!

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
Thank you, Nana Ama. It’s an absolute pleasure to be here and share this platform with you to discuss such an important topic.

Nana Ama McBrown:
We’re excited to have you! Now, today’s discussion revolves around a very hot topic: TikTok. Some call it a national security threat, while others say it’s just a smokescreen for superpower rivalry. But what caught my attention is your perspective on why data has become the new currency, the new oil, and even the new gold. Could you elaborate on this for us?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
Of course, Nana Ama. The idea of data as the new oil or gold speaks to its immense value in the modern world. In the 20th century, oil was the driving force of economies—it powered industries, wars, and global dominance. Today, data has taken its place as the world’s most valuable resource. Why? Because data fuels innovation, decision-making, and technological advancements in ways we’ve never seen before.
Every time we use a smartphone, browse social media or even shop online, we generate data—our preferences, behaviours, and patterns. This data feeds artificial intelligence algorithms, making them smarter and more efficient. For companies, this translates to better services, targeted ads, and, most importantly, massive profits. For governments, it becomes a tool for surveillance, power, and influence.

Nana Ama McBrown:
That’s fascinating. But what makes data so much more valuable than, say, oil or traditional currency?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
Unlike oil, data doesn’t run out—it grows and multiplies exponentially. The more we interact with technology, the more data we create. What makes it even more powerful is how it drives automation and artificial intelligence. For example, AI systems use our data to learn, predict, and improve—whether it’s self-driving cars, virtual assistants, or healthcare diagnostics.
But here’s the key: data doesn’t just inform businesses; it gives them control. When companies or governments control data, they control people’s decisions, economies, and even narratives. That’s why data has become a geopolitical weapon—it’s not just about money; it’s about influence.

Nana Ama McBrown:
Influence? Can you explain how that works in real-world terms?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
Sure. Let’s take TikTok as an example. The US government argues that TikTok poses a national security threat because the data it collects could end up in the hands of the Chinese government. While this may be a valid concern, the underlying issue is that controlling data means controlling people’s attention and, ultimately, their behaviour.
Social media platforms like TikTok have the power to shape trends, opinions, and even elections. This is why countries are battling over who controls these platforms. It’s not just about entertainment or apps—it’s about who gets to influence the minds and decisions of billions of people.

Nana Ama McBrown:
Wow. That makes the TikTok debate sound much bigger than just a social media ban. So, is the US justified in its actions?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
It’s a complex issue. On one hand, nations can protect their data and citizens. On the other hand, we must question whether these actions are truly about security or superpower rivalry. The US wants control of TikTok because it understands that data is power. However, we also need to remember that no country, including the US, is completely innocent regarding data collection and surveillance.

Nana Ama McBrown:
That’s a great point. Let’s shift gears slightly. You’ve mentioned that data is now currency. What do you mean by that?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
When I say data is currency, I mean it’s now a medium of exchange—just like money. Companies like Google, Facebook, and TikTok offer free services, but in return, we give them something far more valuable: our data. They use this data to predict our behaviour, sell targeted ads, and generate billions of dollars in revenue.
In essence, we are trading our privacy and personal information for convenience. But unlike traditional currency, where the value is fixed, the value of data grows over time as technology evolves. That’s why it’s so lucrative.

Nana Ama McBrown:
I see. And does this data-driven economy come with risks?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
Absolutely. One of the biggest risks is inequality. Just as oil-rich countries became powerful, data-rich companies and nations are now dominating the world. This has created massive disparities in wealth, access, and influence.
Another risk is the loss of privacy. We’ve reached a point where we’re being monitored 24/7—by governments, corporations, and even hackers. This level of surveillance raises ethical questions about consent, security, and control.
Finally, there’s the issue of environmental impact. Storing and processing data requires massive energy consumption. In some ways, the data economy is contributing to the very climate crisis we’re trying to solve.

Nana Ama McBrown:
You’ve given us so much to think about. Before we wrap up, how can individuals and societies navigate this data-driven world responsibly?

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
It starts with awareness. People need to understand the value of their data and take steps to protect it—whether that means reading privacy policies, limiting app permissions, or using secure platforms.
On a larger scale, governments and organizations must prioritize transparency and ethics. We need regulations that ensure data is used responsibly and equitably. As a society, we must move away from the obsession with profit and focus on creating systems that benefit everyone—not just the powerful few.

Nana Ama McBrown:
Wise words, indeed. Thank you so much, Ms. Gahutu, for shedding light on this critical topic. It’s been an absolute pleasure having you here.

Ms. Assumpta Gahutu:
Thank you, Nana Ama. The pleasure was mine. I hope this conversation inspires people to think critically about the role of data in our lives.

Nana Ama McBrown:
