Introduction: The Beauty Beyond the Surface
In a world overflowing with filters, trends, and impossible beauty standards, it’s easy to forget where true beauty begins. As society pushes quick fixes and external perfection, many silently struggle, chasing validation through appearance while neglecting the deeper roots of confidence and well-being.

Enter Linda-VO, the radiant chef and lifestyle muse redefining what it means to be beautiful in today’s world. Her mantra, “Think Healthy, Get Beautiful,” isn’t just a catchy phrase—it’s a call to return to wholeness. Through mindful eating, inner work, and self-love, she invites us to shift our focus from the surface to the soul.
In this special feature, we explore Linda-VO’s philosophy, grounded in both culinary artistry and Buddhist wisdom. This isn’t just about food or fashion—it’s about living fully, joyfully, and fearlessly in your own skin.
Linda-VO:

In many parts of the world, for example, thousands—about 2–3% of the population—struggle with diabetes, often due to excessive sugar in their food and alcohol consumption. These health challenges sometimes result in severe complications, including amputations. Yet, instead of addressing the root causes, society tends to emphasise appearance over well-being.
There is a growing obsession with external beauty—spending hours in front of mirrors or at the gym—not to nurture health, but to fix what is perceived as flawed. True beauty, however, begins from within. It is shaped by how we nourish our bodies and minds.
Think Healthy, Get Beautiful invites us to a lifestyle of mindful eating and balanced living. It’s about embracing a fearless, joyful approach to life—seeing beauty not just in the mirror, but in the choices we make every day.

As Nichiren Daishonin teaches, “When the skies are clear, the ground is illuminated.” In the same way, when we illuminate our minds with wisdom and compassion, the beauty of our lives shines through.
Think Healthy, Get Beautiful: A Deeper Look into True Confidence and Beauty:
In recent years, there’s been a growing trend among young men and women to do whatever it takes to appear more attractive. From detailed skincare routines and intense workouts to more alarming practices, such as starvation diets, steroid use, or even cosmetic surgeries that involve breaking facial bones, many are chasing ever-changing standards of physical beauty.
While there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your best or caring for your health and hygiene, the problem arises when we allow fleeting trends and rigid beauty ideals to define our worth. Fashion changes, appearances shift, and societal standards evolve—but inner strength and beauty are timeless. True happiness and confidence come not from the mirror, but from within.
Linda-VO Reflects: “How We Perceive Is Key”
Drawing on Buddhist philosophy, Linda-VO shares a powerful insight:

“We each see the world through our lens. How we view ourselves and others shapes our experience of beauty. Real transformation begins with how we think and feel inside.”
Buddhism explains that life is made up of five components that shape how we experience the world:
- Form – the physical aspect of life, including the body and the five senses.
- Perception – how we take in external information through our senses and mind.
- Conception – how we interpret what we perceive.
- Volition – our intent and will to act.
- Consciousness – our awareness and ability to integrate the above.
As SGI President Daisaku Ikeda explains, form represents the material side of life, while the other four are spiritual. But they’re inseparable: how we look is intertwined with how we think, feel, and act.
For example, someone driven by hunger or desire may see the world through scarcity and need, while someone at peace may perceive joy and opportunity, even in the same situation. This perspective, known in Buddhism as the Ten Worlds, reminds us that our state of life shapes how we see ourselves and others.
Beauty Is Found in Unshakable Confidence
Linda-VO’s mantra—“Think Healthy, Get Beautiful”—invites us to live with mindfulness, balance, and purpose. Through daily chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and consistent self-practice, we raise our life state and unlock the courage, wisdom, and compassion needed to transform insecurity into empowerment.
This is what Buddhism calls human revolution—an ongoing journey of self-growth.
As Ikeda Sensei wisely says:
“Self-confidence comes from hard work and effort… Only those who challenge themselves, even after failing, can develop true, unshakable confidence. Self-confidence is synonymous with an invincible will.”
So rather than chasing society’s often unrealistic beauty ideals, we can live passionately, support others, and transform our inner world. That’s when our true beauty shines—confident, radiant, and real.

The quote I used by in the article—”When the skies are clear, the ground is illuminated.”—originates from Nichiren Daishonin’s writing titled “The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind” (Kanjin no Honzon-shō), dated April 26, 1273. In this work, Nichiren writes:
“When the skies are clear, the ground is illuminated. Similarly, when one knows the Lotus Sutra, one understands the meaning of all worldly affairs.”
—Nichiren Daishonin, The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 376
This metaphor illustrates how clarity in understanding the Lotus Sutra leads to a comprehensive insight into the nature of all worldly phenomena. Just as a clear sky allows the ground to be fully illuminated, a clear and enlightened mind perceives the true essence of life and its challenges.
I adapt this teaching to emphasise that by illuminating our minds with wisdom and compassion, our inner beauty naturally radiates outward, aligning with Nichiren’s philosophy that inner transformation leads to external harmony.
Here’s our dialogue styled like a feature interview between Cookieteegh and myself based on the article “Think Healthy, Get Beautiful”, perfect for a digital magazine:

Cookieteegh:
Good day, beautiful people! I’m thrilled to welcome you to this very special feature in Assumpta Weekly Magazine. Today, we’re diving into a philosophy that’s redefining health, beauty, and the modern African lifestyle.
The headline reads: “THINK HEALTHY, GET BEAUTIFUL.”
And joining me is none other than the glowing force behind this message—celebrated chef, wellness advocate, and cultural muse—Linda-VO.
Linda, welcome! Let’s begin with that powerful title. Think Healthy, Get Beautiful—what does it mean to you?

Linda-VO:
Thank you so much, Cookieteegh. I’m honoured to be here with you—and with all the readers of Assumpta Weekly!
To me, Think Healthy, Get Beautiful is a return to wholeness. It’s about shifting our focus from superficial standards to nourishing our lives from the inside out. When we eat mindfully, practice self-love, and live boldly, beauty isn’t something we chase—it radiates naturally.

Cookieteegh:
Inspiring! Now let’s talk about your cover story from Lifestyle & Flair Magazine.
COVER STORY: Linda-VO — The Chef Who’s Redefining Culinary Chic;
In the heart of the modern culinary scene, a bold new voice is rising—one that’s as vibrant in flavour as it is in fashion.
Meet Linda-VO, the chef and lifestyle icon who’s stirring up more than just sauces.
Dressed in a striking red ensemble that effortlessly turns heads, Linda-VO isn’t just making meals; she’s making statements.

Linda-VO:
Thank you, Cookieteegh. Known for my love of bold spices, elevated comfort food, and sleek design, my presence in the kitchen is about more than cooking—it’s performance, it’s passion.
“Cooking is my art,” I like to say. “But confidence is my secret ingredient.”
Behind the selfies and style is a serious dedication to health, creativity, and cultural connection.

Cookieteegh:
So you mean that…
The kitchen isn’t just where you work—it’s your runway, your sanctuary, and your stage.

Linda-VO:
Exactly. But it’s not all glamour. I’m deeply committed to wellness, authenticity, and community.
I want women to know they can thrive in their skin, without compromising flavour, culture, or joy.
From mastering recipes to embracing body positivity, I share that journey with honesty and pride.
“For me, lifestyle is all about balance: indulgence and health, fashion and function, hustle and self-care—it’s all part of the recipe.”

Cookieteegh: Linda, it’s so refreshing to hear your perspective on beauty. The idea of focusing on inner health and well-being, rather than just appearance, really stands out. Can you share more about how you integrate mindfulness into your daily routine, especially in the context of food and self-care?

Linda-VO: Thank you, Cookieteegh. Mindfulness is at the core of everything I do. In terms of food, I believe that what we consume should nourish not just our bodies, but our minds too. I always encourage mindful eating—taking the time to truly savour each bite and appreciating the food for its ability to sustain us. This approach helps us tune into our bodies and understand what they truly need, rather than simply eating out of habit or for comfort.

Cookieteegh: That’s such a beautiful approach! It sounds like it’s about finding balance. In today’s fast-paced world, people are often consumed with external appearances, sometimes to the point where they neglect their health. How do you feel we can shift this focus from outward beauty to inner well-being?

Linda-VO: It is all about perspective. Our culture often promotes the idea that beauty is about fitting a certain mould, a mould that is constantly shifting. But true beauty, as I see it, comes from a place of self-love and balance. When we focus on nurturing ourselves, body and mind, the outward appearance naturally aligns with that inner harmony. It’s not about denying the desire to look good, but about understanding that real beauty stems from a deep sense of peace within yourself.

Cookieteegh: You’re right. I think so many people are chasing after an ideal without realising that the most sustainable form of beauty comes from self-acceptance and growth. How do Buddhist teachings inform your perspective on beauty and confidence?

Linda-VO: Buddhism teaches us that our perceptions are deeply connected to our state of life. For example, when we feel at peace, we naturally see the world—and ourselves—in a more compassionate and beautiful light. But when we are driven by fear or insecurity, our perceptions become distorted, and we see flaws where there are none. That’s why I emphasise the importance of chanting Nam-Myoho-Renhe-Kyo, of grounding ourselves in wisdom and compassion. It’s through this process that we unlock true confidence, one that doesn’t depend on external validation but on an unshakable belief in our worth.

Cookieteegh: I love that! It’s so powerful to think about beauty as something that comes from within and doesn’t rely on fleeting trends. It’s about cultivating that internal strength and self-assurance. How do you think we can encourage others to adopt this mindset?

Linda-VO: It starts by reclaiming my self-worth. Through Buddhist practice, you gain inner confidence and self-worth, and now am helping others through my newsletter articles to do the same.
It also starts with leading by example. When we live authentically, showing up in the world with confidence and kindness, we inspire others to do the same. We also need to create spaces where people feel safe to explore their self-worth without the pressure of comparison. That’s why my message is always: “Think Healthy, Get Beautiful.” It’s about the small daily choices we make to nurture ourselves—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—that lead to true beauty.

Cookieteegh: That’s such an empowering message. You’re reminding us that beauty isn’t a destination, but rather a journey of self-awareness and growth. It’s about embracing who we are, flaws and all. And I love the idea that, through practice and mindfulness, we can unlock our fullest potential.

Linda-VO: Exactly. Life is a constant opportunity for growth, and our beauty comes from our ability to rise, learn, and evolve. As Nichiren Daishonin says, “When the skies are clear, the ground is illuminated.” It’s a reminder that when our minds are clear, free of confusion and self-doubt, we see the world—and ourselves—in a clearer, more beautiful light.

Cookieteegh: That’s such a beautiful thought, Linda. It truly is about inner clarity illuminating our external world. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insights today. I’m sure many will find inspiration in your words to embrace their unique beauty.

Linda-VO: It’s my pleasure, Cookieteegh. Remember, the beauty that comes from a deep sense of self-awareness and compassion is timeless, and that’s something worth nurturing every single day.

Cookieteegh:
That’s so powerful. And it ties beautifully into your reference to Nichiren Daishonin’s quote:
“When the skies are clear, the ground is illuminated.”
You connect that to self-awareness and compassion as the true path to beauty. Can you speak more about that?

Linda-VO:
Absolutely. This quote reminds us that inner clarity, just like a clear sky, allows our external world to shine.
When we cultivate wisdom, compassion, and gratitude, our perception of life changes.
Instead of seeing flaws, we begin to recognise strength. Instead of comparison, we find joy.
It’s not just philosophy—it’s the secret to confidence, radiance, and resilience.

Cookieteegh:
And that, Linda-VO, is exactly what today’s readers need to hear. Beauty isn’t bought. It’s built from how we think, feel, and feed ourselves.

Thank you for sharing your light, flavours, and fearless approach to life. We can’t wait for the full feature on Wednesday, May 14th, 2025. Your glow-up starts here!
