Infusing Self-Expression and Empowerment in African Culture
Having lived through the hardships of poverty in Nigeria, I have come to firmly believe that Africa must become a continent that champions its unique and diverse culture. Only through the power of culture can we foster a true recovery from the legacy of oppression and the cycle of poverty. Culture, in its many forms—music, dance, poetry, and fashion—is a foundation for self-expression and empowerment that can inspire transformation from within.

Artists like Tiwa Savage embody this belief, using their talents not only to entertain but to uplift and inspire change. By embracing her heritage, expressing her personal experiences, and advocating for social equity, Tiwa demonstrates the vital role that culture plays in empowering individuals and communities. Her artistry is a reminder that our stories, values, and expressions are powerful tools for change, capable of uniting people across borders and helping Africa to rise from within.
Through culture, we can preserve our identity, fuel resilience, and promote a vision of a prosperous Africa. When we celebrate and invest in African voices and artistic expression, we lay the groundwork for a future where our culture is a beacon of hope, strength, and progress.
These expressions of self and empowerment are not intended to provoke hatred or diminish the respect owed to feminism; rather, they celebrate the idea that art is “the blossoming of human life and the triumph of the spirit.” Art, in this view, is a form of liberation—a way to express our deepest experiences, struggles, and aspirations.

When individuals strive to transcend their suffering and bring forth joy and peace for others, a natural, radiant joy emerges within. This joy, when channelled into music, dance, drama, or even bold and unapologetic displays of self, becomes a powerful force. Whether it’s a song that speaks to resilience, a dance that moves the soul, or a playful moment on the beach shared with a friend, these expressions are essential facets of artistic freedom.
In these moments of honest expression, art is truly born—art that resonates with the audience, that reflects humanity’s capacity to overcome adversity, and that allows each individual to realise their full potential. Such art is magnificent because it transcends boundaries, capturing both vulnerability and strength and ultimately transforming personal experience into a shared celebration of life and spirit.
Assumpta Newsletter & Lifestyle Magazine Interview Featuring: Tiwa Savage, The Poetess Unveiled.

Assumpta: “Somebody’s son, come find me one day…” Tiwa, those words echo like poetry, don’t they? Before we even begin, let me say—it’s an honour to speak with you. Your music resonates like an anthem for so many, connecting to hearts and hopes in a truly powerful way.

Tiwa: Thank you so much! It’s wonderful to be here with Assumpta. I’ve always felt music is a shared experience—a way of letting our stories sing together. I’m grateful my music can bring people that sense of connection and strength.

Assumpta: Assumpta newsletter publication recent magazine titled “The Poetess Unveiled.” We believe your artistry speaks far beyond music, capturing harmony, resilience, and dignity. How does that description resonate with you?

Tiwa: I’m deeply touched by it. For me, music is a canvas where I express not only my journey but also the emotions we all share. Whether it’s love, resilience, or the strength to move forward, I aim to bring something true and relatable into every song. I feel music is not just sound; it’s a way to reflect life, to uplift, and to empower.

Assumpta: Indeed! Take us back to your beautiful song, “Somebody’s Son Go Find Me One Day.” Released in 2021 as part of your Water & Gari EP, it resonated with so many—those searching for love and those who believe in love’s arrival. Can you tell us what inspired that song?

Tiwa: That song came from the heart. I wanted to capture that feeling of longing and hope. It’s a song about faith in love and believing that even if things feel uncertain, love will find its way. For many people, it became a reminder that hope and love go hand in hand, and that’s something I always want to communicate.

Assumpta: It’s beautiful. Your approach has also made you a symbol of self-expression and empowerment within African culture. As someone who’s seen both struggle and triumph, how do you see your music contributing to this vision of an empowered Africa?

Tiwa: Having grown up in Nigeria, I understand the resilience it takes to keep going despite hardships. I’ve always believed that Africa must honour its culture and celebrate our stories through music, dance, fashion, and art. By embracing my heritage, and my own story, and speaking up for equity, I hope to show that our culture is powerful and that art can truly bring change. Every part of our identity—our struggles, our dreams—has value, and sharing these through music makes us stronger together.

Assumpta: It certainly does. And your style—your tattoos, your fearless fashion—it all speaks volumes, showing that self-expression in every form is not about rebellion but about liberation, as you once said, “the blossoming of human life and the triumph of the spirit.”

Tiwa: Exactly. I want people to see that there’s freedom in embracing who you are. Whether it’s a song, a style choice, or even a simple tattoo, each expression holds part of my story. When I choose to show that vulnerability and strength, I hope others feel encouraged to do the same.

Assumpta: That’s such a powerful message. Your artistry, your advocacy—every bit of it merges to create something much larger than trends. Your work truly resonates with people who are searching for joy, peace, or a sense of identity. Would you say that’s part of your mission?

Tiwa: Absolutely. When I perform, I’m not just thinking of the song itself but of the way it can uplift someone’s spirit, inspire a movement, or even offer a sense of healing. I believe that’s where art finds its true purpose—not just in entertaining but in reminding people of their power, their beauty, and their worth. Each person has a story, and when we share it, we create something magnificent.

Assumpta: Beautifully said, Tiwa. Thank you for sharing your journey with us today. It’s clear you are a poetess in every sense, and we’re honoured to feature your voice in Assumpta Newsletter & Lifestyle Magazine. May your artistry continue to inspire and uplift, bringing Africa—and the world—closer to a place of unity and self-empowerment.

Tiwa: Thank you. It’s been such a pleasure. I hope to keep sharing my story and inspiring others to embrace theirs fully because that’s where true beauty lies.
