One might think it is obvious in a military conflict who has won and who has lost. But is it? It seems to be commonly accepted that the Americans lost the Vietnam War, even though they won all or most of the actual battles on the ground. Wars, modern military theory states, are not won on the battlefield – they are won in people’s minds, in the cognitive domain. To secure the support of the population for participating in military operations, a government must present good, persuasive reasons.

 Such reasons have come to be called “war narratives”. A war narrative can be seen as a reason whose job it is to bolster the conclusion that participation in a war, often far away from home territory, is legitimate and right. In this chapter, we discuss the content and function of war narratives: what they say, why they arise, the audiences they are aimed at, and how they fare over time. This latter issue is particularly important, we suggest, because war narratives may erode if or when counter-evidence piles up as military events unfold. If that happens, the narrative becomes a liability to its narrator. The audience becomes skeptical and retracts its support – the narrative fails to persuade, and the war might be lost.

Hungary and Slovakia have expressed reservations about continued financial and military support to Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has opposed additional EU funding for Ukraine, advocating instead for supporting peace initiatives. Similarly, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Slovakia would cease financial and military aid to Ukraine, emphasizing a preference for diplomatic solutions.

 In Germany, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has doubled its vote share to 20.8%, becoming the second-largest party. In France, Marine Le Pen’s recent conviction for embezzlement and subsequent five-year ban from running for office have led to public demonstrations and claims of political bias, significant political shifts and growing public dissatisfaction with traditional political establishments. Of course, the challenges we face are immense. But I believe—and we can choose to believe—in the latent power of humanity to do good and to drive change.

There is always something each of us can do to help build a more peaceful and sustainable planet for future generations. Sometimes, it’s as simple as a smile to a neighbor.

No matter how small, every drop of hope matters. Every act of kindness and courage creates a ripple. And one day, those ripples will grow—and flourish.

As someone who works with early childhood education, I see firsthand what happens when governments ignore the foundational needs of society. While leaders invest in weapons, many parents in so-called “developed nations” can’t afford daycare, nutritious meals, or proper healthcare for their children. They have forgotten that real power is not demonstrated through tanks on parade but through how a nation nurtures its young, supports its mothers, and protects its most vulnerable.
