Lewis Hamilton’s inspiring story mirrors Nichiren Daishonin’s emphasis on “Never Regressing in Faith.”
As Nichiren Daishonin writes: “Carry through with your faith in the Lotus Sutra. You cannot strike fire from Flint if you stop halfway. Bring forth the great power of faith, and be spoken of by all the people of Kamakura, both high and low, or by all the people of Japan, as ‘Shijō Kingo, Shijō Kingo of the Lotus school!’”
Nichiren encourages: “Even a bad reputation will spread far and wide. A good reputation will spread even further, particularly if it is a reputation for devotion to the Lotus Sutra. Explain all this to your wife too, and work together like the sun and moon, a pair of eyes, or the two wings of a bird. With the sun and moon, could there be a path of darkness? With a pair of eyes, no doubt you will see the faces of Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, and the Buddhas of the ten directions. With a pair of wings, you will surely fly in an instant to the treasure land of Tranquil Light.”

Join us for this insightful exploration of Lewis Hamilton’s journey, his connection to resilience, and the timeless wisdom of Nichiren Daishonin.
Introduction

Lewis Hamilton will feature in Assumpta Sport Magazine, sharing his heartfelt tribute to Michael Schumacher and reflecting on his journey in an article titled “Learning From a Champion”. This piece will also appear in Assumpta Champions Magazine.
In the article, Hamilton draws inspiration from Nichiren Daishonin’s Gosho, “Earthly Desires Are Enlightenment” (WND, Vol. 1, p. 319), particularly the emphasis on unwavering faith. Quoting the Gosho, he writes:
“Carry through your faith in the Lotus Sutra. You cannot strike fire from a flint if you stop halfway.”
(Earthly Desires Are Enlightenment: The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, p. 319).

Hamilton reflects on how these teachings have shaped his resilience and perseverance—values that resonate deeply in his career and legacy.
Hamilton also acknowledges the profound impact Michael Schumacher had on motorsport, crediting him as an inspiration for the qualities that have defined Hamilton’s success.
“Michael Schumacher is among the greatest our sport has ever seen,” Hamilton writes. “When you grow up with a passion for motorsport, certain figures become your heroes, and Michael was undoubtedly one of mine. His speed, work ethic, determination, and consistency—the sheer length of his career at the highest level—is nothing short of admirable.”

Hamilton’s tribute goes beyond Schumacher’s racing achievements, emphasizing the values he demonstrated off the track:
“When I think about Michael’s legacy, it’s not the trophies or accolades that stand out—it’s the family he and Corinna built together. Their strength, humility, and sincerity speak volumes about the man Michael was.”
Hamilton reflects on the rare bond he shares with Schumacher as the only two drivers in Formula 1 history to achieve seven world championships. He recalls matching Schumacher’s record at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, a defining moment in motorsport history.
While their careers followed distinct paths—Schumacher’s dominance with Ferrari from 2000 to 2004 and Hamilton’s success during Mercedes’ hybrid era—both have left an indelible mark on the sport.
Looking ahead, Hamilton reveals his ambition to bring Ferrari another championship when he joins Scuderia Ferrari in 2025—a feat achieved only by Kimi Räikkönen since Schumacher’s historic reign.
Lewis Hamilton :
My name, Lewis Hamilton, is celebrated worldwide—by people of all statuses, from the highest to the humblest, and by those from Jamaica, Africa, and English descendants alike—as “Shijō Kingo, Shijō Kingo of the Lotus School!”

A bad reputation may spread far and wide, but a good reputation travels even farther. My name has become synonymous with devotion to my craft, exemplifying the highest standards in my career as a Black athlete. I have demonstrated to the world that Black and white individuals can work together to achieve remarkable success and victory.
As the Gosho states: “Work together like the sun and moon, a pair of eyes, or the two wings of a bird.

I strive to embody this spirit, illuminating the immense potential of unity and cooperation across all devices. My legacy is one of perseverance, equality, and triumph.
Dialogue between Lewis Hamilton and Tsasi

Tsasi: Good evening, Lewis. It’s truly an honour to sit down with you today, especially as we approach the release of this special edition of Assumpta Sports Magazine. How are you feeling about sharing your story and reflections with the world?

Lewis Hamilton: Thank you, Tsasi. It’s a pleasure to be here. Honestly, I’m excited and humbled at the same time. Sharing my journey and the lessons I’ve learned along the way is something I’ve always felt passionate about. The idea of inspiring others, especially by connecting my experiences to Nichiren Daishonin’s teachings, feels incredibly meaningful.

Tsasi: That’s wonderful to hear. Speaking of Nichiren Daishonin, your reflections on the Gosho, “Earthly Desires Are Enlightenment”, are deeply inspiring. How has this teaching shaped your mindset, both in and out of the racing world?

Lewis Hamilton: The Gosho reminds us of the power of faith and perseverance. The line, “Carry through your faith in the Lotus Sutra. You cannot strike fire from flint if you stop halfway,” has always resonated with me. It’s a call to remain steadfast, even when the odds are against you. This mindset has been a cornerstone of my career—whether it was breaking barriers as a Black athlete in Formula 1 or pushing through challenges on and off the track.

Tsasi: That determination truly shines through in your story. In the feature article, you reflect on Michael Schumacher’s impact on motorsport. What is it about Schumacher that inspires you the most?

Lewis Hamilton: Michael’s achievements in the sport are legendary, but it’s his work ethic, consistency, and passion that I admire most. He was relentless in his pursuit of excellence, and that’s something I’ve always aspired to emulate. Beyond the trophies, though, it’s the values he upheld—his dedication to his family, and his humility—that have left a lasting impression on me.

Tsasi: Your tribute to Schumacher highlights the humanity behind the legend, which is so touching. But you’ve also made history, becoming one of only two drivers to achieve seven world championships. How does that shared milestone shape your legacy?

Lewis Hamilton: It’s surreal, to be honest. Sharing that rare achievement with Michael is an incredible honour. But what stands out is how our journeys differ yet align in their impact. Michael’s era with Ferrari and my time with Mercedes have shown that no matter the circumstances, commitment to the craft and pushing the boundaries can redefine what’s possible.

Tsasi: And now, with your upcoming move to Ferrari in 2025, you seem poised to write a new chapter in your legacy. What are your hopes for this next phase of your career?

Lewis Hamilton: Ferrari has a legacy unlike any other team, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to that. My goal is clear: to bring another championship to Ferrari, a feat that hasn’t been achieved since Kimi Räikkönen in 2007. It’s going to be a challenge, but as the Gosho teaches, unwavering faith and dedication can make the impossible possible.

Tsasi: Your words are truly inspiring, Lewis. Lastly, your message about unity—about showing the world that people of different backgrounds can come together to achieve greatness—is so powerful. How do you hope this message will resonate with your audience?

Lewis Hamilton: I hope it shows that success isn’t just about individual achievement but about collective effort and breaking barriers together. As the Gosho beautifully states, “Work together like the sun and moon, a pair of eyes, or the two wings of a bird.” When we align our strengths and support one another, there’s nothing we can’t achieve. My legacy isn’t just about winning races—it’s about illuminating the path for others to believe in themselves and unity.

Tsasi : Can you tell the readers which area of your life you nurtured and developed before becoming a

Lewis Hamilton: That’s a great question, Tsasi. If I had to pinpoint one area of my life that I nurtured and developed before becoming a champion, it would be my resilience.
From a young age, I faced challenges that could have easily discouraged me. Growing up as a Black kid in a predominantly white sport, I experienced prejudice and doubt from others. But instead of letting those moments define me, I focused on building my mental and emotional strength.
A big part of this resilience came from my father, Anthony Hamilton. He has always been there for me, not just as a father but as a mentor and motivator. He worked multiple jobs to support my early racing career, sacrificing so much to make sure I had the opportunities I needed. My dad taught me the value of hard work, determination, and never backing down in the face of adversity.

I also developed an unwavering sense of discipline. Whether it was practising in go-karts during my childhood or dedicating myself to fitness and strategy as I moved up the ranks, I learned that consistency and hard work are key to success.
Finally, I nurtured my faith—not just in myself, but in something greater. My connection to teachings like those of Nichiren Daishonin played a huge role. They reminded me to persevere, never give up, and see obstacles as opportunities to grow.
With my dad’s support and the lessons I learned along the way, I was able to build the mindset that has carried me through every victory and setback in my career.

Tsasi: Would you say you knew what to do because you spent this preparation period strengthening your sense of self, clarifying what you truly want, and identifying what you value in life?

Lewis Hamilton: That preparation period was crucial for me. I took the time to strengthen my sense of self, understanding who I am and what drives me. It wasn’t just about becoming a great driver—it was about clarifying what I wanted to stand for and the values I wanted to carry.
Early on, I realized that my passion for racing wasn’t just about winning; it was about inspiring others, breaking down barriers, and showing what’s possible when you believe in yourself and put in the hard work.

During that time, I also learned to block out negativity and focus on my goals. Knowing what I value—like resilience, equality, and perseverance—helped guide me through the toughest moments. That clarity gave me the strength to keep pushing forward, even when the odds were stacked against me.

Tsasi: Thank you, Lewis. Your insights and journey are truly inspiring. I’m sure our readers will gain a lot from this. We look forward to sharing your story in Assumpta Sports Magazine’s Special Edition: Championships!

Lewis Hamilton: Thank you for this conversation, Tsasi. It’s been meaningful to reflect on the journey and the values that have shaped me both on and off the track. Staying grounded, believing in myself, and never giving up have been key to everything I’ve achieved.
As the article title says, it’s all about “Learning From a Champion”—and that’s something I hope others can take away from my story too.

Tsasi: Thank you, Lewis. Your insights and journey are truly inspiring. I’m sure our readers will gain a lot from this. We look forward to sharing your story in Assumpta Sports Magazine’s Special Edition: Championships! Thank you, again, for sharing your wisdom and vision. I know this special edition of Assumpta Sports Magazine will touch countless lives.
