The Hand That Turns Gossip Into a Reputation
Gossip and complaining are often viewed as negative aspects of human behaviour—frequently dismissed as petty or destructive. However, Kelly Weekers, renowned author and life coach, challenges this perspective. In her latest work, she invites readers to reassess these social behaviours, suggesting that when approached thoughtfully, gossip and complaining can serve as powerful tools for building connections, sparking change, and even enhancing reputations.
Gossip: A Social Glue
Weekers argues that gossip is an inherent part of human society, often acting as a social glue that strengthens relationships.
“Gossip is simply sharing stories about others, and those stories shape the reputations that influence our decisions,” she explains.
Similarly, she emphasizes that complaining, when constructive, can highlight important areas for improvement rather than being purely negative.
Kelly Weekers: A Trailblazer in Psychology & Coaching

After earning her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Neuroscience in 2011, Weekers took a sabbatical year to engage in full-time Miss Netherlands activities and modelling. She later completed her master’s degree in Clinical and Health Psychology, finalizing her studies in March 2014.
Since then, Weekers has become a bestselling author, selling over 250,000 books and founding her own publishing house, Moonshot Publishing, along with Moonshot Coaching.
Bestselling Books & Global Recognition
As of November 2022, she published her bestseller “The Power of Choice.”
As of April 2023, her other bestseller, “Happy Life 365,” is available worldwide.
According to the CPNB Top 100, Kelly’s book ranked #3 among the best-selling non-fiction books in the Netherlands.

A Fresh Perspective on Gossip & Complaining
In her books and seminars, Weekers encourages a balanced approach: Instead of shunning gossip and complaining, she urges individuals to reflect on the intent behind their words.
Are we using them to harm, or are we using them to connect, solve problems, or initiate growth?
By reframing these behaviours, Kelly Weekers challenges the traditional negative perception of gossip and complaining, inviting us to see them as tools for strengthening relationships and fostering mutual understanding.

Illuminating an Era of Misinformation
Gossip, Complaining & Misinformation—How They Shape Society
What do gossip, complaining, and misinformation have in common? They are all deeply woven into the fabric of our daily lives, influencing public perception, decision-making, and trust within our communities. In an era where false narratives and deception spread rapidly, it is crucial to recognize how these elements contribute to the larger issue of misinformation and, more dangerously, disinformation—the deliberate spread of falsehoods.

Renowned author Kelly Weekers and celebrated media personality Berla Mundi lead a compelling dialogue on the impact of gossip, complaining, and misinformation, offering insights on how to identify and combat them with faith, wisdom, and discernment.
The Power and Danger of Words
Kelly Weekers, a psychologist and bestselling author, challenges the one-sided negative perception of gossip and complaining. She argues that while these behaviours can spread misinformation and harm reputations, they also serve as mechanisms for social bonding and problem-solving—but only when approached responsibly.

“Gossip is part of human interaction. It’s how we share stories, build trust, and navigate relationships. However, when twisted into misinformation or fueled by malice, it can destroy reputations and mislead entire communities,” Weekers explains.

Berla Mundi, a respected voice in journalism and advocacy, emphasizes the media’s role in shaping public discourse. She warns that in a world dominated by social media and sensational headlines, misinformation can distort reality, leaving individuals confused, misled, and divided.
From Gossip to Disinformation: A Society Under Siege

Berla-Mundi : Consider the environmental crisis in Ghana—issues such as Galamsey (illegal mining), water pollution, and the energy crisis. When forums and exhibitions seek to educate citizens about these pressing issues, misinformation often arises in an attempt to suppress the truth.

Galamsey and Environmental Destruction: While activists expose the devastation of lakes and rivers, certain groups spread conflicting narratives, creating doubt and inaction.
Energy Crisis and Economic Challenges: Rather than fostering solutions, misleading reports can incite fear and frustration, diverting focus from accountability and real progress.
When misinformation is deliberately weaponized, it becomes a tool for manipulation, fear-mongering, and control. Weekers and Mundi both stress that combating misinformation starts with awareness, critical thinking, and faith in truth.
How to Identify and Combat Misinformation
1. Verify Your Sources – Not every news article, social media post, or WhatsApp message is credible. Seek out trusted sources and fact-check information before believing or sharing it.
2. Question the Intent – Ask yourself: Is this information meant to inform or to manipulate? Is it driven by truth, bias, or an agenda?
3. Engage in Constructive Dialogue – Instead of blindly accepting or spreading rumours, engage in open conversations, listen to multiple perspectives, and promote truth over sensationalism.
4. Have Faith in Truth and Integrity – In a world of confusion, faith and wisdom can serve as guiding principles. Upholding truth requires courage, discernment, and responsibility.
A Call to Action
As Kelly Weekers and Berla Mundi illuminate the era of misinformation, they encourage individuals to become agents of truth—to challenge falsehoods, foster constructive conversations, and build a society based on facts rather than fear.
Join the conversation and be part of the change. Truth matters, and so does your role in upholding it.
Peacemakers in the Face of Opposition: Lessons from History and Nichiren Daishonin
Throughout history, activists, educators, writers, and exhibitors have faced relentless opposition in their efforts to bring about change. From the struggle for Ghana’s independence to modern-day advocacy for justice and transparency, those who stand up for a better society have often become targets of slander, suppression, and hostility.
As Assumpta Newsletters have previously highlighted, many who sought to challenge corruption and uplift Ghana were vilified by the media, undermined by external forces, and betrayed by those driven by greed and jealousy. The oppressive tactics of the corrupt elite and the meddling CIA—from the colonial era to the post-independence years—illustrate a broader pattern: those who fight for peace and justice inevitably face resistance.
A Spiritual Perspective: Nichiren Daishonin’s Teachings

This struggle is not unique to Ghana’s history. Nichiren Daishonin, the 13th-century Buddhist reformer, wrote extensively about the obstacles that arise when one works for good. His teachings remind us that resistance is inevitable when truth and justice challenge entrenched power structures.
“There is something extraordinary in the ebb and flow of the tide, the rising and setting of the moon, and how summer, autumn, winter, and spring give way to each other. Something uncommon also occurs when an ordinary person attains Buddhahood. At such a time, the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat.”
Nichiren describes the Three Powerful Enemies—those who slander, manipulate, and conspire against those spreading the truth. As Daisaku Ikeda, a modern Buddhist leader, explains:
“Without seeking to confront the Daishonin in person … They went crying to the authorities. Moreover, and most cowardly of all, they did so under the guise of ‘appealing for justice.’ Since this lobbying took place in clandestine meetings, the Daishonin and his followers who were the target of the slanderous rumours did not even have the opportunity to make a rebuttal.”
Modern Parallels: The Battle for Truth and Justice
This pattern is eerily familiar. When we look at the environmental activists fighting against Galamsey, the journalists exposing corruption, and the leaders advocating for economic and social reforms, we see the same tactics used against them. False accusations, media smear campaigns, and secretive efforts to discredit their work are common.

Three African Women Advocating for Social, Economic, and Environmental Reforms.
But just as Nichiren Daishonin teaches, such obstacles are proof that the movement for truth is progressing. The wise understand that opposition is not a sign of failure but a confirmation that their efforts are shaking the very foundations of corruption and injustice.
A Call to Persevere
As we navigate an era where misinformation, deception, and opposition seek to undermine those working for peace and justice, we must remain steadfast. Whether through faith, education, activism, or journalism, we must recognize that these challenges are not signs to retreat but opportunities to reaffirm our commitment to truth.
“Just as Nichiren clearly explains, devilish functions are to be expected as we advance peace.”

The fight for a just and prosperous Ghana—and a better world—continues. And history shows that those who persevere in the face of slander and adversity ultimately shape the future.

Berla Mundi: Kelly, it’s great to have you here! Your insights on gossip, complaining, and misinformation have challenged a lot of people to rethink the way they engage with words and narratives. Today, I’d love for us to explore how misinformation has shaped history and continues to shape our world today.

Kelly Weekers: Thank you, Berla! It’s a pleasure to be here. Misinformation is one of the most powerful forces in society, and understanding how it works is key to reclaiming truth and integrity.
Illuminating an Era of Misinformation

Berla Mundi: You’ve often spoken about how misinformation isn’t just a modern issue—it has shaped entire civilizations. Can you share a perspective on this?

Kelly Weekers: Absolutely. Let me tell you a story that illustrates this perfectly.
The Story of a Boy Who Lied:
“It started with a boy who wanted to build a superior civilisation—not by embodying its ideals, but by manipulating perception.
He wanted admiration, love, and respect, but his actions bred contempt and destruction. He stole, killed, plundered the environment, and trampled on human dignity—all while weaving a grand illusion.

His so-called ‘civilisation’ was supposed to usher in an era of rationality, justice, brotherhood, and equality. But what followed?
- White supremacy and colonization
- Predatory capitalism
- Hundreds of millions of deaths from war
- The rise of PR and propaganda industries
- Misinformation and control of truth
- Unprecedented wealth concentration in the hands of a few
- Income disparity beyond imagination
The very ideals he preached became tools for domination and control. Monarchs and popes of the Dark Ages never dreamed of wielding such power. And then, as civilization advanced, people called it ‘progress.’ Technology flourished, but at what cost?
It was driven by the war industry, brutal resource extraction in exploited nations, and by mining that destroyed lands and lives. And in the name of progress, he built weapons capable of annihilating all human life on this planet. Yet, he still call it prosperity, progress, and security. Is that truly what enlightenment is?”
The Power of Perception

Berla Mundi: That story is incredibly powerful, Kelly. It shows how entire systems of oppression, inequality, and destruction were built on misinformation. And yet, many still believe these narratives without question.

Kelly Weekers: Exactly. The greatest trick misinformation ever played was convincing people that oppression was progress. That’s why we must constantly question the narratives presented to us—who benefits from them? Who suffers because of them?

Berla Mundi: This ties back to what you say about gossip. Words have the power to build or destroy. The same goes for misinformation—it can create illusions that justify injustice. So how do we fight back?

Kelly Weekers : 1. Question Everything – Always ask: Who is telling this story? What is their agenda?
2. Verify Information – Don’t just accept things at face value. Seek out multiple sources.
3. Understand Intent – Is this information meant to inform or manipulate?
4. Have Faith in Truth – Integrity and discernment are our greatest tools against deception.
A Call to Action: Reclaiming Truth

Berla Mundi : It’s clear that misinformation is a powerful tool for control, but it’s also clear that awareness and critical thinking can help dismantle its effects. Before we close, what would you say to those who feel powerless in the face of so much deception?

Kelly Weekers: You are never powerless. Truth has a way of surfacing, but it needs people who are willing to seek it, share it, and stand by it. Start by questioning. Start by thinking critically. Most importantly, never be afraid to challenge narratives that feel incomplete or misleading.

Berla Mundi: Kelly, this has been an incredible conversation. Thank you for sharing your insights and this powerful story. I hope our readers take this as a challenge to think deeply, question boldly, and reclaim the truth for themselves.

Kelly Weekers: Thank you, Berla! It’s these conversations that light the way forward.
Final Thoughts: This dialogue between Kelly Weekers and Berla Mundi reminds us that misinformation is not just about false news headlines—it is a powerful force that has shaped history and continues to define our world. If we truly want enlightenment, we must ask: Are we consuming narratives, or are we questioning the forces behind them?
