AFUA:
From a young age, I was steeped in the rich tapestry of Ghanaian traditional music and storytelling. Born into a family with a deep love for Ghanaian cultural heritage, my musical upbringing was an immersive experience that would shape my artistic trajectory.
Growing up in a small village in Ghana, I was surrounded by the vibrant sounds and rhythms of her ancestors. My family, particularly my grandparents, were revered custodians of the ancient traditions passed down through generations. Their evenings were often filled with mesmerising performances, where each family member played a vital role. The rhythmic pulse of the drums, the melodic plucking of the kora, and the resonant voices telling tales of their history and culture became the soundtrack of my childhood.
My parents recognized my natural talent and encouraged me to explore my passion for music. At the age of six, i began taking formal lessons on the xylophone, an instrument deeply intertwined with Ghanaian traditional music. Under the guidance of my family and local music teachers, I quickly honed my skills, absorbing the intricate techniques and nuanced expressions that were the hallmark of my cultural heritage.

Music was not simply an art form for my family; it was a means of preserving their cultural identity and passing it on to future generations. Their performances were not just captivating spectacles but immersive journeys into Ghanaian folklore and mythology. The stories they shared came alive through the cadence of their voices and the emotive melodies played on their instruments. It was through this powerful storytelling that I learned the importance of music as a vessel for preserving history and igniting social change.
As I matured as a musician, my artistic trajectory became deeply entwined with my family’s love for Ghanaian traditional music. I saw my music as a bridge between the past and present, a medium through which I could connect with my cultural roots. It became my mission to preserve and elevate the rich musical heritage that had shaped my upbringing.
Guided by the spirit of my ancestors and inspired by their artistic legacy, I embarked on a journey to share my music with the world. I merged the traditional sounds of Ghana with contemporary influences, crafting a unique sonic identity that resonated deeply with audiences. Through my performances and compositions, i aimed to not only entertain but also educate and inspire, encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cultural traditions that had moulded me.
My musical upbringing and the love my family had for Ghanaian traditional music played a pivotal role in shaping my artistic trajectory. It was through their passionate performances and captivating storytelling that I discovered my own voice. Today, as a celebrated musician and custodian of my cultural heritage, I continue to immerse my listeners in the enchanting world of Ghanaian music, ensuring that the legacy of my family’s love for their roots lives on for generations to come.

Just like you, Afua, I have discovered that many musicians had the power to illuminate and elevate their own life. It became a medium through which they could express their deepest emotions, find solace during challenging times, and celebrate the beauty that surrounded them.
With each chord and lyric, they became more connected to their own purpose and mission. The more they shared their music, the stronger their own voice grew, and the more confidently they navigated the complexities of life.
In the end, the journey of music was not only about creating art for the sake of art, but about using our talent as a tool for positive change. It was about honouring our ancestors, embracing our heritage, and leaving a lasting legacy of love and unity for future generations.
Through music, we can find our true calling, and the melody of peace and happiness continues to resonate in every aspect of our existence.
“Singing with hope and words of brilliance, the value and beauty both exist in the songs we play. Singing a song is a serious task, just as choosing the right words to create a song. Life is also a battle of winning in the present moments, not ‘sometime’ but now, not ‘someone’ but you, Afua Asantewaa. Keeping your determination in mind, you persistently carried out your activity, seizing the moment you won the singing competition, surpassing the Indian Guinness record holder.”
