The Coco Flower in Full Bloom: Fulfilling My Potential
By Assumpta Sport Exclusive
In a moment that transcends sport, Coco Gauff stands radiant with her trophy in hand — a symbol not only of athletic triumph but of personal evolution, strength, and deep inner values. The powerful imagery of Coco smiling, victorious and grounded captures a journey far more profound than the final score.

Rising Like the Lotus
The headline, “The Coco Flower in Full Bloom,” is more than poetic. It is symbolic. Like the lotus flower — revered in the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism — Coco’s rise has emerged not from ease, but from challenge. The lotus blooms only from muddy waters, a reminder that our greatest potential is often forged through adversity. Coco, in her grace and grit, reflects this truth.
Her composure on the court and the joy in her victory illustrate the quiet strength of someone who has not only fought battles in the physical realm, but also within, against doubt, pressure, and the weight of expectations. Through it all, she stands rooted, resilient, and blooming.
Strength Inspired by Legends
Coco’s admiration for Serena Williams is well known, but it is also deeply resonant. Serena, too, embodies power, dignity, and defiance in the face of obstacles — and has been a beacon for the next generation of athletes. Coco doesn’t merely follow in those footsteps; she redefines them with her values, her own voice.
Much like Serena, Coco brings with her a strength that is internal and spiritual — a reflection of belief systems that teach one to turn pain into purpose, and obstacles into fuel. This isn’t just about sport. It’s about becoming.
A Message for All: Cheerful Progress
The cover line, “A Cheerful Progress,” says it all. It is not only the celebration of a win but a nod to the journey of self-fulfilment, the joy found in growth, and the courage it takes to keep showing up — not just to compete, but to evolve.
This message aligns seamlessly with the essence of “Fulfilling My Potential.” It’s not simply a personal mantra, but a universal one — that we are all, in our ways, flowers in bloom, capable of transcending the mud, finding light, and radiating it forward.
More Than a Champion
Coco Gauff is a champion, yes — but more importantly, she is a symbol. Of youth with wisdom. Of success with humility. Of dreams with discipline. She represents what it means to strive not just for greatness in the eyes of the world, but for wholeness within oneself.
And as she continues to bloom, she inspires others to do the same — to grow with grace, stand with strength, and fulfil the beautiful potential within.
A Cheerful Progress: My Journey as a Lotus Blooming from the Mud.
By Coco Gauff

My dream of becoming a world champion has been nothing short of a joyful progress. Just like the lotus flower, I’ve had to transform in the mud — facing challenges, doubts, and setbacks — in order to bloom with beauty and purpose.
I am not just a tennis player. I am a female tennis artist — someone who creates value through the game. I picked up a racket when I was just 6 years old, back in 2010. Now, in June 2025, I’m 21 and have been playing this sport for 15 years. I turned professional at the age of 14 in 2018, and I’ve been working incredibly hard ever since — pushing myself so that my dreams could start coming true, one after the other.
Today, I have trophy rooms filled with memories — symbols of victories that reflect not just wins on the court, but milestones in my personal growth. While the trophies are impressive, what moves me the most is the journey behind them — my path of self-mastery. That means more than improving technique; it means learning how to challenge and revolutionise myself from within. As Nichiren Daishonin teaches, real change starts from inside. When I transform my inner life, it shows up in everything around me — including how I play.
I now understand the meaning of the article title: “A Cheerful Progress.” It’s the joy that comes from choosing growth, even when it’s tough. It’s the strength that comes from falling and standing again. And I’m grateful I’ve discovered this truth.
As a Black female tennis player, my story symbolises the lotus flower. I bloom through the mud, carrying beauty, strength, and purpose into a world that often misunderstands or underestimates both.
Recently, I reached a major milestone by winning the 2025 French Open Women’s Singles title. In a thrilling final, I defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 6-7(5-7), 6-2, 6-4. This was my first French Open title and second Grand Slam singles title, following my 2024 victory. That day, I didn’t just win a match — I overcame years of pressure and pain to prove to myself that I belong here.
Representing the United States of America on the global stage has been an honour. My encounters with opponents are deeply meaningful to me. Through them, I’ve discovered my turning points, faced my fears, and refined my art.
There are times, like during my match with Sabalenka, when tension ran high. She claimed I didn’t play well enough to beat her. But I didn’t need to argue. I didn’t focus on proving her wrong. I focused on what I’ve always trusted — my legs, my strength, my rhythm. I knew that once my long legs warmed up, they would chase down every shot she hit. I knew they would carry me, again and again, until they couldn’t anymore.
And when the match ended — with her in grief and disbelief — I was left wondering if she understood what she had witnessed: a lotus flower blooming from the mud, not to defeat others, but to inspire joy, courage, and hope.
This is my art. This is my purpose. And this, truly, is my cheerful progress.
Prologue: The Mud, the Racket, and the Bloom.

Before the cheers, before the trophies,
There was silence.
There was a struggle.
There was mud.
Not the kind you see on shoes after rain —
But the kind life is placed at your feet
When you’re born into a world
that doubts what a Black girl can become
With a racket in her hand
and a dream in her heart.
I didn’t start this journey to prove anyone wrong.
I started it to prove myself right.
To answer a quiet voice that said:
“You are more than what they see.”
And every early morning,
every sore muscle,
Every missed shot —It
was a part of my transformation.
I am not just a tennis player.
I am an artist.
My canvas is the court.
My strokes are movement, rhythm, and will.
And my masterpiece?
Is not a title,
but a life lived with purpose.
This is not just a story of winning.
This is the story of becoming —
like the lotus that rises through the mud
not to escape it,
But to bloom because of it.
Welcome to my cheerful progress.
Certainly! Here is the dialogue introduction and opening exchange between Berla Mundi and Coco Gauff, crafted in a rich, engaging, and internationally accessible format. It blends personal storytelling with warmth, symbolism, and insight — perfect for a feature interview in Assumpta Sports Magazine.

Berla Mundi Opens the Conversation:

Berla Mundi: Welcome, Coco. It’s an incredible honour to share this space with you in Assumpta Sports Magazine’s special edition — The Coco Flower in Full Bloom. Your tennis initiative represents your commitment, not just as a world champion, but as a radiant force — a flower blooming in full colour and noticeable light in the world.

Not all of us know about the Lotus -Flower a flowers that bloom in the muddy pond. In adversity, how did this colourful flower live through tough times, and show its true value, especially during the French Open, when you beat Aryna Sabalenka to become visible to the world?
Before we dive into that powerful match, could you first tell our global readers about your background? That will be a good way for us to understand the roots of the Coco flower.
Coco Gauff Responds.

Coco Gauff:
Thank you so much, Berla. It’s a real joy to be with you, and I want to sincerely thank Assumpta Sports Magazine for hosting me in this beautiful feature. I’ve followed your work, Berla, and to be in this dialogue with you — someone who champions young women and truth — means so much.
Let me begin by sharing a bit of my journey.
I was born in Delray Beach, Florida, in 2004, and I picked up a tennis racket at the age of six. My parents — both former athletes — supported me from day one. They didn’t just see potential in me; they nurtured it. But the truth is, it wasn’t always easy. Growing up as a young Black girl in a sport that’s often elite and exclusive came with its struggles. There were doubts, quiet judgments, and plenty of pressure. But those moments — muddy beginnings—were where my roots grew deep.
In 2018, at just 14 years old, I turned professional. That moment wasn’t just a career milestone — it was the beginning of my spiritual and emotional training, too. I learned that tennis is more than a game. It’s an art. And I’ve always seen myself as a tennis artist — someone who doesn’t just play for trophies, but plays to create value, joy, and inspiration.
And now, in 2025 — at 21 years old — I look back on a journey filled with hard work, human revolution, and growth. My trophy room is full, yes. But it’s the process that truly moves me. Every loss taught me. Every win refined me.
This Thursday, June 12, 2025, we’ll unveil The Coco Flower in Full Bloom — and honestly, I think that title captures everything. Because I bloomed, Berla. Through it all. And not just for myself — but to bring something beautiful into the world.

Berla Mundi
Coco, thank you for sharing your background so openly. You’re not just a champion of tennis, but of spirit, too. Now, let’s revisit that powerful moment in Paris — the 2025 French Open final. You faced Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s No.1. There was so much pressure, expectation, even some tension in the air.
How did you ground yourself in such a charged atmosphere? And what did it mean for you, emotionally and symbolically, to emerge victorious?

Coco Gauff
That final was more than a match. It was a moment of truth.
I remember standing on that clay court, not just with a racket in hand — but with everything I’d been through inside me. Years of doubt, sacrifice, training, and growing. And yes, I knew Sabalenka was coming in strong. She had confidence, power, and presence. But so did I — and mine came from within.
You see, the title of this feature, “The Coco Flower in Full Bloom”, it’s not just poetic — it’s personal. Like the lotus flower, I’ve grown through mud: the pain of being underestimated, the sting of defeat, the challenge of finding joy in pressure. But instead of letting that mud bury me, I let it nourish me.
When Sabalenka questioned my performance — implying I didn’t play well enough to beat her — I didn’t respond with anger. I didn’t need to.
Because I know my body. I know my spirit. Once my long legs warmed up, I could chase every shot she hit. My movement, my rhythm — that’s my art. I didn’t need to play her game. I played mine. With joy, with strength, and with love for what I do.
And when I won — 6-7(5-7), 6-2, 6-4 — it wasn’t just a scoreline. It was a message:
That beauty can rise from struggle. That grace can come through grit.
That a Black girl with a dream and a fire inside can bloom on the biggest stage in the world — and do it with light.

Berla Mundi
That was breathtaking, Coco. You speak with the same power that you play with — from the soul.
So let me ask: looking back now, how has your mindset evolved from that 6-year-old girl with a racket to the young woman standing here as a two-time Grand Slam champion?

Coco Gauff
That’s such a meaningful question. When I started, I just wanted to hit the ball over the net. Now, I want to move mountains — for others, and myself. Tennis gave me a platform. But faith, family, and self-mastery gave me my foundation.
I’ve learned, especially through the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, that real change starts from within. I work on my spirit the same way I train my backhand. I challenge fear. I transform pain. And the more I change on the inside, the more it shows on the court — and in life.
This journey has never just been about trophies. It’s about becoming — becoming someone who lives with purpose, leads with compassion, and never forgets where she came from.

Berla-Mundi
That is the essence of A Cheerful Progress, isn’t it? Growth not without struggle, but because of it. Coco, your story is more than inspiring — it’s necessary.

Coco Gauff
Thank you, Berla. If one young girl reads this and feels like she can rise through her own mud — then my bloom means something.

Berla-Mundi:
Before we close our dialogue, I’d like to ask a personal question. I believe it will be a beautiful way to introduce you to our readers. You’ve journeyed through trials and lessons, and though still young, you did not escape the difficult circumstances life posed to you.
Today, you’ve become a flower of hope. Many watch you on tennis courts, through TV screens—finding joy and strength in your presence. With all those voices applauding you, what would you like to say to them?

Coco Gauff:
My journey in tennis is more than just performance—it’s a promise. A promise of a new tomorrow. I stand not only as an athlete but as a symbol of hope for Black girls and women around the world. People may be oppressed, but they can rise. They can merge into something stronger.
I have deep respect for Serena and Venus Williams. They weren’t just champions; they were visionaries who broke barriers with unmatched courage and passion. They exceeded every expectation placed on them.
By continuing their legacy, I’ve chosen not just to chase titles, but to honour what they built. Their story wasn’t just personal—it was communal. They stood for the unheard. I want to do the same.

Berla Mundi:
Of course. If we were to list Black female tennis players who didn’t come from privilege but became legendary inspirations, Serena and Venus would be at the top.

Coco Gauff:
Exactly. As you mentioned, in the adversity of how flowers survive and bloom, the Williams sisters appeared in difficult times and illuminated the courts. Their true value, as humans and pioneers, is something we still feel today.

Berla Mundi:
Creating value in an age of oppression demands tempered discipline and resilience. I believe any flower that blooms—whether in spring or autumn—endures harsh winters, storms, and strong winds. But when it blossoms, it becomes a source of joy.
You understand, both professionally and personally, what you stand for. In our next issue, we’ll explore your mission more deeply. But for now, I leave you with a quiet prayer for continued strength.
[Final note:]

Berla-Mundi:
Your handwritten note isn’t just charming—it’s a testament to belief, intention, and the quiet rituals that anchor champions. It’s a heartfelt reminder: big dreams often begin with small, consistent affirmations. 📌 Want to share?

Coco-Gauff:
“Victory is written before it’s earned. My simple affirmation—‘I will win French Open 2025’—is proof: manifest your dreams, then live them.”
“I will win the French Open 2025.”
— from my handwritten sheet, my pen repeating the affirmation with quiet conviction.
“Eight times, I wrote it. ‘I will win the French Open 2025.’”
2025’—is proof: manifest your dreams, then live them.”
will win French Open 2025.” A champion builds belief long before match point.
