“Two Pieces of Mirror” – A Conversation Between Queen Máxima and Berla Mundi
When Two Brilliant Minds Collide to Shape the Future
What happens when two visionary minds come together to discuss a transformative concept that has reshaped societies?
On Monday, April 7, 2025, Berla Mundi, one of Ghana’s most distinguished broadcast journalists, sat down with Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands for an insightful discussion on the theme “Two Pieces of Mirror.”

Before she became Queen Máxima, she was a young girl born and raised in Argentina, where she witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of inequality. The brokenness she saw in her country became a mirror that ignited a lifelong mission—to champion financial inclusion for all, regardless of background or circumstance.
This is more than just an interview—it is the story of resilience, purpose, and impact, a journey that has transformed millions of lives worldwide.
Queen Máxima and Her Centered Philosophy:
Her Majesty has devoted her advocacy to transmitting respect for life and human well-being through financial inclusion. She believes that peace begins when every individual is allowed to recognize and develop their full potential as a human being.

One of her key priorities is eliminating wage inequality—working towards pay equity. The Netherlands was one of the first countries to legally enforce equal pay for men and women, a groundbreaking step in addressing systemic disparities in the workforce.
But why was this legislation so crucial? Queen Máxima’s philosophy centers on identifying and uplifting professions that require high responsibility, skills, and education but remain undervalued and underpaid.
Her vision extends beyond economics—she calls it the Well-Being Economy: “People’s happiness must.
A Dialogue on Gender Equality and Well-Being:

Berla Mundi: Your Majesty, you have been advocating for a well-being economy to gender equality. Could you share your vision for the future?

Queen Máxima: The well-being economy agenda aims to build a society where people’s happiness is the foundation, rather than just economic metrics. Traditional indicators like GDP, inflation, and interest rates are important, but we must also measure health, education, and well-being. Are people satisfied with their lives? Do they have access to quality healthcare, safe housing, and education? Are they able to enjoy culture and community life?
Environmental sustainability also plays a crucial role. We must ask: How much waste is being recycled? How are we addressing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions?
Above all, gender equality is essential to constructing a society where people can live happily. Achieving this requires a long-term commitment, yet political challenges often push leaders to prioritize short-term results. However, I hope we will see the values of a well-being economy become deeply ingrained in global governance.

Berla Mundi: In one word, what does gender equality mean to you?

Queen Máxima: Opportunity.
A Conversation Between Berla Mundi and Her Majesty Queen Máxima;

Berla Mundi:
Your Majesty, it is truly an honor to sit with you today. Thank you for taking the time to have this important conversation.

Queen Máxima:
Thank you, Berla. The pleasure is mine. I am delighted to be here and to discuss a subject that is very close to my heart—one that shapes not only economies but also the quality of life for people around the world.
The Road to the Economy of Human Well-being

Berla Mundi:
Your Majesty, you have long been a champion of financial inclusion and economic reforms that focus on human well-being rather than just economic growth. Could you share what “The Economy of Human Well-being” truly means and how this title encapsulates the philosophy of happiness and prosperity for all?

Queen Máxima:
Certainly, Berla. Historically, economies have been judged by their GDP, stock markets, and trade surpluses. However, these indicators do not reflect the true state of people’s lives. What is the meaning of economic success if millions still live without access to basic healthcare, financial services, or dignified work?
The Economy of Human Well-being is a philosophy that shifts focus from financial accumulation to human prosperity. It ensures that progress is measured by how well people live, not just how much money is made. A truly successful economy is one where:
- Every individual, regardless of background, has equal opportunities to thrive.
- Financial systems are inclusive and accessible, providing security for all.
- Economic policies prioritize happiness, dignity, and human fulfillment rather than mere profits.
This philosophy redefines success—one that ensures economies work for the people, not just for corporations and the privileged few.
Why “The Two Pieces of Mirror”

Berla Mundi:
The title of this feature, The Two Pieces of Mirror, is both symbolic and thought-provoking. Could you explain what it represents?

Queen Máxima:
Absolutely. The Two Pieces of Mirror reflect the duality of perspective in human progress—how our understanding of inequality and justice is shaped by what we see and experience.
One piece of the mirror represents the brokenness of the world—the inequality, suffering, and financial exclusion that trap millions in poverty. It is the harsh reflection of a system that prioritizes wealth over well-being.
The second piece of the mirror is the vision of what could be—a world where economic systems are built on fairness, dignity, and inclusion. When we put these two pieces together, we see the full picture: why change is necessary and how we can create it.
My journey mirrors this concept. Growing up in Argentina, I saw the first piece of the mirror—the deep economic disparities, the struggle of families without access to financial stability. But instead of accepting it as reality, I looked towards the second piece of the mirror—the possibility of an economy that serves everyone.
The Heart That Diminishes Posterity;

Berla Mundi:
That is a powerful analogy, Your Majesty. Our special edition also features a section titled The Heart That Diminishes Posterity. Could you share how this theme connects to your work in financial inclusion?

Queen Máxima:
The phrase The Heart That Diminishes Posterity speaks to the consequences of neglecting future generations. Every decision we make today—about economic policies, financial inclusion, environmental protection, and human rights—directly impacts those who come after us.
A society that ignores inequality, wage gaps, and financial exclusion is a society that fails its future generations. When access to education, healthcare, and financial services is denied to millions, we are not just failing them—we are diminishing the potential of entire future generations.
That is why financial inclusion is not just about economics—it is about preserving the dignity and prosperity of future societies. Every child born today deserves to grow up in a world where they have:
- Access to financial tools that allow them to build secure lives.
- Opportunities to thrive regardless of their gender, race, or background.
- A future that is not defined by the poverty of their parents.
True leadership means thinking beyond the present moment—ensuring that the policies we implement today uplift those who will inherit the world tomorrow.
Pioneering Global Ethical Principles :

Berla Mundi:
Your advocacy extends beyond financial inclusion; you have also championed Global Ethical Principles, which focus on four key areas:
- Respect and care for the community of life
- Ecological integrity
- Social and economic justice
- Democracy, nonviolence, and peace
Why have these principles been central to your mission?
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long. Welcome, Assumpta! You are the beautiful soul who inspired me with your grace and beauty to embark on this journey. Welcome, my dear—let’s continue what we started together.”
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long. Welcome, Assumpta! You are the beautiful soul who inspired me with your grace and beauty to embark on this journey. Welcome, my dear—let’s continue what we started together.”

Queen Máxima:
These four principles are the foundation of a sustainable and just world. Economic success means little if it does not respect human dignity, environmental sustainability, and global peace.
- Respect and care for the community of life means recognizing that economic policies must protect all people and the planet, not just corporate interests.
- Ecological integrity ensures that financial systems do not exploit natural resources at the cost of future generations.
- Social and economic justice demands that everyone, regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic background, has access to the tools they need to succeed.
- Democracy, nonviolence, and peace remind us that a just economy cannot exist without a fair and stable society.
Without these ethical foundations, we risk creating a world where financial success benefits only the elite while leaving millions behind.
Building a Well-Being Economy :

Berla Mundi:
Your Majesty, you have spoken extensively about the well-being economy. Could you share your vision for the future?

Queen Máxima:
The well-being economy is about building a world where financial success is measured not just by numbers but by people’s happiness. Traditional indicators like GDP, inflation, and trade balance are useful, but they do not tell us:
- Are people satisfied with their lives?
- Do they have access to healthcare, housing, and education?
- Are they financially secure?
- Can they pursue careers and dreams without systemic barriers?
Additionally, environmental sustainability must be a priority. We must ask:
- How much waste is being recycled?
- What is the state of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions?
Above all, gender equality is fundamental. No society can claim to be just or progressive if women continue to face wage disparities, financial exclusion, and limited access to leadership roles.
However, achieving this vision is a long-term commitment. Political systems often prioritize short-term economic gains over lasting change. But I am hopeful that as we continue these conversations, more leaders will adopt the values of a well-being economy into their policies.
