Securing The Foundation: The Unforgettable Scene
The recent resurgence of debates surrounding Jerry John Rawlings’ legacy underscores the struggle to reconcile Ghana’s past with its present. The foundation of Ghana’s Fourth Republic—built on democratic principles—was in part shaped by Rawlings’ leadership, yet the unforgettable scenes of his early rule continue to provoke strong emotions.
From the dramatic executions of military leaders in 1979 to the structural economic shifts under his tenure, Rawlings left a mark that cannot be ignored. The recent controversy—where an MP labelled his daughter the “daughter of a murderer”—shows how deeply personal and unresolved these historical wounds remain.
In securing Ghana’s democratic foundation, it is crucial to critically examine, rather than selectively remember, the past. The allegations of human rights abuses, the privatization of national enterprises, and even the complex geopolitical manoeuvrings—including the Sharon Scranage espionage case—illustrate that history is never one-dimensional.
As social media revives these conversations, Ghana faces a key question:
How do we secure a foundation for the future without ignoring the unforgettable scenes of the past? The answer lies in open discourse, historical accountability, and a commitment to truth—no matter how uncomfortable it may be.
How the CIA Traded Ghanaian Lives for Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings to Come to Power:

One of the most controversial allegations against Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings is his role in the executions of military leaders in 1979, supposedly to restructure Ghana’s economy. However, labelling these events solely as Rawlings’ doing ignores a deeper and more disturbing reality—one that has been buried within Ghana’s history and data archives.
The greatest danger lies in the fact that Ghana’s national database holds inaccurate and incomplete records about its history and citizens. Many Ghanaians remain unaware that the CIA played a significant role in orchestrating the circumstances that led to the dramatic executions of military leaders. This critical data, which could expose the true forces behind these events, remains hidden from public access.
The Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) did not seize power on their own—CIA intelligence operatives were working behind the scenes to support their rise. The narrative being pushed by the media and some Members of Parliament, branding Rawlings as a murderer, is based on unfounded gossip, rumours, and speculation rather than documented historical truth. The real concern is that Ghana’s historical records have been manipulated, shielding those who were truly responsible for the killings while placing the blame solely on Rawlings.
This distortion of history has done more than just tarnish Rawlings’ name—it has divided Ghanaians, fostering mistrust and misinformation. The challenge now is to uncover and confront the hidden forces that shaped Ghana’s past, rather than relying on fragmented and misleading accounts that serve external interests.
Securing the Foundation: Confronting the Unforgettable Legacy of Jerry John Rawlings:
The recent resurgence of debates surrounding Jerry John Rawlings’ legacy underscores the ongoing struggle to reconcile Ghana’s past with its present. The foundation of Ghana’s Fourth Republic—built on democratic principles—was, in part, shaped by Rawlings’ leadership, yet the unforgettable scenes of his early rule continue to provoke strong emotions. From the dramatic executions of military leaders in 1979 to the structural economic shifts under his tenure, Rawlings left an indelible mark on Ghana’s history. The recent controversy—where an MP referred to his daughter as the “daughter of a murderer”—highlights how deeply personal and unresolved these historical wounds remain.
CIA Influence and the Forces Behind Rawlings:

While there is definitive proof that Rawlings was directly controlled by the CIA, several reports and classified documents suggest that foreign intelligence agencies played a role in shaping Ghana’s political trajectory during his rule. U.S. intelligence had a history of involvement in Ghanaian affairs, most notably in the 1966 coup that overthrew Kwame Nkrumah.
Names such as Philip Agee, a former CIA officer who exposed covert U.S. operations in Africa, and Robert Papp, a known operative stationed in West Africa during the late 1970s and early 1980s, have been linked to broader intelligence activities in the region.
Additionally, the case of Sharon Scranage, a CIA clerk found to have been spying for Ghanaian intelligence, suggests that Ghana was both a target of foreign surveillance and an active participant in Cold War intelligence battles. Some analysts argue that Rawlings’ early coups—especially the 1981 takeover—aligned with broader U.S. geopolitical interests in countering socialist movements in West Africa. While there is a smoking gun proving direct CIA orchestration, the influence of foreign forces on Ghana’s political direction remains a critical area for further investigation.
Reckoning With History:
As social media revives these conversations, Ghana faces a key question: How do we secure a foundation for the future without ignoring the unforgettable scenes of the past?

The answer lies in open discourse, historical accountability, and a commitment to truth—no matter how uncomfortable it may be. Understanding the full extent of foreign involvement in Ghana’s political transitions, as well as the domestic motivations behind Rawlings’ actions, is essential to making sense of his legacy. The renewed debates should not only focus on Rawlings as an individual but also on the larger forces—both domestic and foreign—that shaped Ghana’s path.
That’s a sharp and necessary question—how can an uninformed population discern fact from fiction when the media itself is compromised?
When the storytellers are given invisible threads to weave a tale, how can the people tell the difference between truth and deception? If the Emperor’s New Clothes is what they’re being sold, how do they know if it’s a fine garment or a cheap fabrication from a sweatshop?
This article does not focus on Jerry John Rawlings simply for the satisfaction of labelling him a murderer. That narrative—whether true or false—has been deliberately manipulated to sow hatred and division, a tactic long used in the CIA’s “divide and conquer” playbook. The real focus is on the manipulation itself—on how history has been rewritten, on how Ghanaians have been fed selective truths, and on how media and political interests continue to shape the legacy of Rawlings and others before him. This is not just about one man’s actions; it’s about understanding who controlled the narrative and why. So, the question remains: How does an uninformed populace recognize the difference between truth and propaganda? The answer lies in questioning everything, digging deeper, and refusing to accept history at face value.
Dialogue: Securing the Foundation – The Unforgettable Scene
Act 1: Opening the Conversation

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu (smiling, but with a serious undertone):
“Welcome, my young visionaries, to this pivotal conversation. Today, we are not just discussing history—we are uncovering its hidden layers, confronting its distortions, and challenging the world to rethink what they know about Jerry John Rawlings and Ghana’s political past.”

(She pauses, looking at each young participant.)
“Before we begin, let me ask you this: If history is written by the victors, then how do the defeated ever tell their story?”

Okomfo-Black (leaning forward, eyes sharp):
“Ms. Assumpta, that question alone exposes the root of our struggle. Ghana’s history has been selectively written, leaving out the invisible hands that shaped our fate. Rawlings was either a hero or a villain, depending on who tells the story—but what if he was neither? What if he was simply a tool in a larger geopolitical game?”

Abena Oforiwaa (nodding in agreement):
“Exactly! And the most dangerous thing is that the people being told this history—the average Ghanaian—have no idea that parts of it have been altered or erased. The CIA’s involvement in our political affairs is not a conspiracy theory; it is documented. But how many Ghanaians even know the name, Philip Agee? Or Robert Papp?”

Titan (his voice calm but firm):
“And this is not unique to Ghana. As an American, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful nations manipulate narratives to serve their interests. The CIA has operated in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East under the same strategy—installing leaders, funding uprisings, and then erasing their fingerprints when history is written. If we are to secure the foundation of truth, we need to ask: Who benefited from Rawlings’ rise? And who suffered?”
Act 2: The Emperor’s New Clothes—A Media Illusion?

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu (leaning back, her voice steady):
“So let’s strip away the illusion. If Rawlings wasn’t acting alone, who were the real forces behind him? And why do we still hear the media and politicians labelling him as a murderer while ignoring the larger forces at play?”

Okomfo-Black (passionately):
“The answer is simple: Divide and conquer. That has been the CIA’s playbook for decades. Rawlings and the AFRC did not just wake up one day and decide to execute Ghanaian military leaders. There were intelligence operatives behind the scenes, pulling strings, shaping the narrative, and ensuring that Ghana took a specific direction—one that aligned with Western economic and political interests.”

Abena Oforiwaa (firmly):
“And now, decades later, the same forces are at work, keeping us divided. Instead of investigating the real orchestrators of those dark days, we are busy fighting over whether Rawlings was a saint or a monster. Meanwhile, the documents, the hidden archives, and the names of those who truly controlled Ghana’s fate remain buried.”

Titan (thoughtful, yet assertive):
“This is where media plays a dangerous role. When the storytellers are given invisible threads to weave a tale, the people only see what they’re told to see. If Ghanaians are being sold the Emperor’s New Clothes, how can they tell if it’s a fine garment or a cheap fabrication from a sweatshop? This is not just about history—it’s about who controls the truth.”
Act 3: The Call to Action—Securing the Foundation

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu (her voice commanding, yet hopeful):
“Then, the question is this: How do we break the cycle? How do we reclaim history, challenge misinformation, and secure a foundation for future generations?”

Okomfo-Black (determined):
“We must demand transparency. If Ghana’s archives hold classified information about foreign interference, we must push for their release. The truth cannot remain hidden forever.”

Abena Oforiwaa (with conviction):
“Education is key. We need to teach young Ghanaians that their history is not just what they read in textbooks. They must learn to question, to research, to think critically, and to connect the dots that others have tried to erase.”

Titan (nodding):
“And it’s not just Ghana. Across the world, young people must wake up to the reality that history is often written to serve the powerful. We must challenge that—to uncover the hidden narratives, to give voice to the unheard, and to ensure that the next generation inherits truth, not propaganda.”
Final Words—A Message to the World
Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu (standing, her voice resolute):
“And that is why this conversation matters. Not just for Ghana, not just for Africa, but for the world. Because if we allow history to be rewritten by those in power, then we allow deception to shape our future.”

“So, to everyone reading this newsletter: We challenge you. Question what you’ve been told. Demand evidence. Seek the truth. Because only by securing the foundation of history can we build a future based on justice, accountability, and true independence.”
(She looks at the young visionaries, who nod in agreement. The world is watching. The conversation has begun, but the real fight—for truth, history, and justice—is just starting.)
