THE POWER OF BREAST MILK:
STRENGTHENING THE BOND BETWEEN MOTHER AND BABY
Mother and Child Relationship: The Breastfeeding Journey
When it comes to the mother–child relationship, the key to transformation is courage. Breast milk is not only the ideal source of nutrition for infants, but it also plays a vital role in building a strong and loving bond between mother and baby. The act of breastfeeding fosters emotional connection, promotes hormonal bonding, and builds trust from the earliest moments of life.

Breastfeeding: A Tradition and a Biological Practice;
Breastfeeding has long been recognised as both a biological necessity and a cultural tradition:
- Biological Practice:
At its core, breastfeeding is a natural process that nourishes infants and supports their healthy development. - Cultural Tradition:
Across many societies, breastfeeding is influenced by cultural beliefs and values, such as how long to breastfeed, where it is considered appropriate, and the societal support (or stigma) surrounding it. Some cultures celebrate breastfeeding openly; others place restrictions or taboos around it. - While breastfeeding is biologically universal, the way it is practised, perceived, and valued is shaped by culture, courage, and often, faith.
Breastfeeding in Times of Crisis
During times of war or displacement, many mothers chose to breastfeed their babies despite overwhelming hardship. Even while wounded, exhausted, and in flight from danger, they prioritised their children’s well-being with nothing more than courage and faith in their innate strength and purpose.

These acts of love and resilience are a testament to the unshakable power of maternal care. In the darkest moments, breastfeeding became not just a means of survival but a deeply human act of hope and connection.
Such faith and courage are essential—not only for the happiness of children and families, but also for nourishing the deep, enduring bond between mother and child.
Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu on Courage: What Is It?

Courage is often linked to heroic acts, reserved in our minds for the few who seem born to face danger. But in truth, courage is something much more subtle—and far more universal.
It is the quiet decision to act despite fear, uncertainty, or discomfort. It’s the choice to do what’s right, even when it’s hard.
As this article explores, every mother carries courage within her, especially in moments of crisis. Even those facing danger and the risk of losing their lives find the strength to breastfeed their children, choosing love, sacrifice, and connection over fear.
10 Practical Tips to Improve Motherhood
- Embrace Imperfection
Allow yourself to make mistakes. You’re growing just as your child is. Grace over guilt. - Prioritise Bonding Time
Daily eye contact, gentle touch, and presence—especially through breastfeeding or cuddling—strengthen emotional connection. - Listen Before You React
Tune in to your child’s cues, words, and emotions. Responding with understanding builds trust. - Practice Self-Care Without Guilt
A healthy mother nurtures a healthy home. Take care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. - Choose Nourishment Over Appearance
Whether it’s breastfeeding or meal preparation, prioritise your child’s growth over societal beauty standards. - Build a Support Circle
Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage your motherhood journey—family, friends, or other mothers. - Educate Yourself Continuously
Stay informed about child development, health, and parenting practices. Confidence grows with knowledge. - Trust Your Instincts
No one knows your child better than you. Let your maternal intuition guide your decisions. - Lead by Example
Children imitate what they see. Model the courage, kindness, and discipline you want to instil in them. - Choose Courage Over Fear
Whether it’s breastfeeding in public, saying no to societal pressure, or facing motherhood challenges, choose faith and courage every time.
At its heart is a deeper message: Courage is available to all of us. Often, it is expressed in the most ordinary yet powerful ways, like nourishing a child.

As the Principal of Babies and Toddlers Daycare, I’ve spoken to many parents about the kind of faith-driven courage it takes to choose breastfeeding. It’s not always easy, and the pressures of modern life, appearance, and self-image can sometimes interfere with that choice.
But as women and mothers, we must ask ourselves:
Do I have courage in my heart at this moment?
Am I choosing faith in my child’s needs, or am I choosing doubt and fear, perhaps even prioritising physical appearance, worrying about keeping my breasts firm, or being attractive for “Mr. Man”—over what my child truly needs?
True courage in motherhood is the decision to give your child what is best for their growth and nourishment, even when it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, or misunderstood.
Let us not shy away from that courage. Let us embrace it.
For our children. For ourselves.

By MzBel:

As a mother, the bond between a mother and her baby is profound and unique, and breastfeeding plays a crucial role in nurturing this connection. Breast milk is not only a complete and balanced source of nutrition for infants but also a powerful tool for strengthening the bond between mother and baby.
1. Emotional Connection
Breastfeeding creates an intimate and emotional connection between a mother and her baby. Through close physical contact, eye contact, and the loving act of nourishing her little one, a mother establishes a deep and nurturing bond. The physical closeness and warmth provided during breastfeeding foster a sense of security and comfort for both mother and baby.
2. Hormonal Bonding
Breastfeeding triggers the release of oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone.” This hormone promotes feelings of love, relaxation, and bonding for both mother and baby. The act of breastfeeding not only nourishes the baby but also enhances the emotional connection between the two.
3. Building Trust
Breastfeeding helps build trust between mother and baby. As the baby relies on the mother to provide nourishment, they develop a sense of trust and security in their caregiver. This trust forms a solid foundation for the future relationship and strengthens the bond between mother and child.

Featuring MzBel & Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu:
An intimate conversation on courage, breastfeeding, and motherhood in modern times;

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu:
Good morning, and welcome to Assumpta Live. I am Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu, co-founder of Assumpta Newsletter Publication Magazine and Principal here at Babies and Toddlers Daycare. It’s a joy to have you with us today for a special edition on motherhood and the transformative journey of breastfeeding.
I’m joined by a very special guest—MzBel, a renowned Ghanaian musician, outspoken voice for women, and now, a mother with fresh insight. Thank you for being here, MzBel.

MzBel:
Thank you, Ms. Assumpta. It’s truly a privilege. As an artist, I’ve shared my truth through music, but becoming a mother opened an entirely new chapter. I’m honoured to be part of this important conversation—because motherhood has humbled me, challenged me, and transformed how I understand love and strength.

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu:
And that transformation—so often born out of courage—is the heart of our dialogue today. In our latest feature, The Power of Breast Milk, we explore how breastfeeding is more than nutrition; it’s an emotional and spiritual bond that begins at the earliest moment of life.
MzBel, you wrote so beautifully about trust and hormonal bonding through breastfeeding. What was that journey like for you?

MzBel:
At first, I was overwhelmed. I didn’t expect how emotional it would be. But every time I held my baby close, felt her heartbeat against mine, and watched her calm down just by nursing, it hit me. This isn’t just feeding. This is connection, healing, and a kind of silent communication. That’s when I began to understand what you mean when you say, “Courage is choosing love even when it’s uncomfortable.”

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu:
Exactly. Many women struggle with the societal pressures that make them question their choices, whether it’s breastfeeding in public, body image concerns, or fear of judgment. I often ask mothers here at the daycare: Are you choosing faith in your child’s needs, or fear based on how the world might see you?
We must be gentle with ourselves and bold in our decisions. Breastfeeding, especially during difficult times, is an act of quiet heroism.

MzBel:
That resonates deeply with me. There were moments I felt unsure—was I doing enough? Was I doing it right? But I came to see that it’s not about perfection. It’s about presence. That’s what my daughter feels most. And reading your 10 Tips to Improve Motherhood—I wish someone had handed me that list in the delivery room!

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu:
(Laughs) I hear that often! But motherhood isn’t a formula. It’s a relationship. We all learn as we go. That’s why I believe strongly in building support systems. Whether it’s a daycare, a mother’s group, or even online communities—no one should walk this journey alone.

MzBel:
Absolutely. And we need to change how we speak to mothers—more encouragement, less judgment. I think what you’ve done with Assumpta Weekly Magazine is so vital. You give voice to real stories. Real emotions.

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu:
Thank you, MzBel. And thank you for using your platform to speak up about what so many mothers experience in silence. Before we close, what message would you give to mothers around the world—those navigating the early days, perhaps in doubt, or even in fear?

MzBel:
I’d say: You are enough. Trust yourself. Tune out the noise and focus on your baby’s eyes, heartbeat, and inner knowing. Whether breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, exhausted, or still figuring it out, you are doing something extraordinary. That bond, that courage—it’s already inside you.

Ms. Assumpta-Gahutu:
That is beautifully said. To all our readers, wherever you are in the world, may you find strength in your journey, courage in your choices, and joy in the small, sacred moments of motherhood.
