Introduction / Review:
“In The Days of Loss, Grief is Love Unspoken beautifully encapsulates the profound connection between love and grief. When we lose someone we care about, the love we have for them doesn’t simply vanish; instead, it transforms into grief. This grief often represents unexpressed feelings, unsaid words, and the memories that linger in our hearts.
Grief can be seen as a testament to the depth of our love. It signifies the void left behind and the emotional turmoil that arises from that loss. The love we hold for the departed often goes unspoken, in the sense that we may wish we could share our feelings with them one last time. In this way, grief becomes an expression of the love we still feel, even in our absence.

Interview: Tsasi in Conversation with Princess Catherine Amelia

Tsasi: Princess Catherine, thank you so much for joining us today. The theme of this edition is grief, and you have spoken before about the depth of grief being a reflection of love. Can you share a personal moment that shaped your understanding of this?

Princess Catherine Amelia: Thank you, Tsasi. Grief is something that touches all of us in different ways, but there is a moment that stands out for me. Some time ago, a friend of mine recalled a smile I had on my face. She asked how I could smile, knowing the tragedies unfolding around us. I remembered that smile vividly because it was during a time when many children, innocent civilians, and UN workers in Palestine and Lebanon were being killed. It was a time of great sorrow, and their lives were tragically cut short. But I smiled because, despite the immense grief, I felt a deep determination to honour their memory.

Tsasi: That’s incredibly powerful. How did you navigate that grief, knowing the loss was so great?

Princess Catherine Amelia: Every action we took in the palace during that time was marked by a desire to transform that overwhelming grief into something meaningful. I believed then, as I do now, that misfortune, no matter how devastating, can be an opportunity to expand our lives. We decided to channel our shock and heartbreak into a renewed determination to bring joy and peace—not just to those within the palace, but to the world. It was about turning grief into a force of action, a reminder that these brief, brilliant lives were not lost in vain.

Tsasi: That’s a profound approach—transforming grief into purpose. It seems like you drew strength from a deeper place of faith during that time. Would you say that helped you maintain resilience?

Princess Catherine Amelia: Absolutely. Despite the devastation, I found solace in a spiritual truth I’ve long held close. These beautiful beings who were so innocently killed had, in a sense, completed their mission in this existence. They had left behind a legacy of love and innocence that we, the living, needed to honour. During those dark days, I returned often to the words of Nichiren Daishonin, words that kept me grounded:
“Though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one might bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun rises in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered.” (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 345)

These words gave me hope, reminding me that even in the darkest moments, our prayers and efforts are never in vain. Our grief becomes an expression of the love we carry for those we’ve lost, and from that love, we can create something beautiful.

Tsasi: It’s remarkable how you’ve framed grief as not just a burden, but a catalyst for growth. How do you believe this transformation of grief can affect those around us and even the wider world?

Princess Catherine Amelia: Grief, when embraced and transformed, has the undeniable power to expand our lives and the lives of others. It connects us to the profound truth that our existence is intertwined with those we’ve loved and lost. When we consciously choose to use our misfortunes as a source of strength, we invite others to do the same. In the palace, we made it a point to foster an atmosphere of hope and joy, despite the pain we felt. We saw that the world around us began reflecting that transformation, even in small ways. When we can rise above our losses and turn that pain into compassion, we change and the people and communities we touch.

Tsasi: Your words remind us that grief can indeed be a force for good. In your experience, what is the key to transforming such deep sorrow into something that enriches life?

Princess Catherine Amelia: The key lies in accepting that grief is a form of love. It’s love that can no longer be expressed directly to those we’ve lost, but it’s still present, still powerful. When we hold on to that love and allow it to guide us, grief becomes more than just sorrow—it becomes a force that pushes us to grow, to act, and to uplift others. The human spirit has the remarkable capacity to take misfortune and turn it into an opportunity for expansion, for creating a more compassionate world. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s deeply fulfilling.
To reflect on Dutch history, I might draw inspiration from the resilience of the Dutch people during pivotal moments when we transformed grief and hardship into strength and progress.
“As the next Queen of the Netherlands, I feel deeply connected to the history of our nation, a history that is rich with stories of resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity. One moment that stands out, and which I often reflect upon, is the aftermath of the catastrophic North Sea Flood of 1953.
I can display specific historical photographs, of the aftermath of the 1953 North Sea Flood in the Netherlands.

The flood caused widespread devastation in the southwest of the country, particularly in Zeeland, South Holland, and North Brabant. Broken dikes led to the flooding of around 1,365 km² of land. Over 1,800 people lost their lives, and tens of thousands of animals perished. Villages and towns were submerged, with homes and infrastructure heavily damaged. The scenes were of destroyed buildings, collapsed dikes, and displaced residents being rescued by boat.
During that devastating disaster, over 1,800 lives were lost, tens of thousands of homes were destroyed, and entire communities were left in mourning. The grief across the country was palpable, but out of that sorrow, the Dutch people did not fall into despair. Instead, they channelled their grief into action, into love for their country, their communities, and future generations.
From that tragedy arose the Delta Works, one of the most impressive and advanced flood protection systems in the world. The Netherlands transformed the grief of that national loss into a determination to ensure that such a disaster would never occur again. The creation of Delta Works stands as a testament to how, as a people, we can take our deepest pains and turn them into something that not only protects but uplifts and secures the future.
The Dutch have always been a people who understand that loss can spark renewal, and that misfortune can catalyze progress. This is a part of our heritage—the ability to transform grief into a constructive force, one that builds, heals, and sustains the country. That same spirit of resilience and love for the land is something I hope to carry forward in my role as Queen. It reminds me that no matter the hardship, we have the power to rise and create something lasting and beautiful from our pain.”

Tsasi: In recounting this moment in Dutch history, you not only highlight the transformative power of grief but also demonstrate your deep connection to the country’s past and your vision for leading with compassion and strength in the future. And in conclusion, you remind us that grief is not just an end, but a testament to the love that endures. It is a force that, when embraced, can propel us forward, expand our lives, and allow us to create a world filled with more compassion, more joy, and more meaning. Even in the face of tragedy, the human spirit is capable of transforming sorrow into a powerful catalyst for growth.

Princess Catherine Amelia:
“The story of the North Sea Flood and the creation of the Delta Works reflects the deep resilience of the Dutch people. It reminds me that grief, when embraced as an extension of love, has the power to transform. Just as the Netherlands used the tragedy of 1953 to build a stronger future, we can each take our losses and create something meaningful out of them.
The title of this edition, The Days of Loss: Grief is Love Unspoken, captures this perfectly. Grief is not simply an end—it is the continuation of love in a new form, one that moves us to rebuild, act, and honour those we’ve lost by creating a better world. In the same way that the Dutch transformed their grief into one of the most remarkable engineering feats in history, we can all turn our sorrows into opportunities for growth and expansion.
The strength of the human spirit lies in its ability to find hope, even in the darkest moments. And as a nation, we have always embodied that spirit. This is a lesson I will carry forward as Queen, knowing that from grief comes love, and from love comes the power to transform the world.”

Tsasi:
“Thank you, Princess Catherine, for your profound insights. Your words remind us that grief, while painful, can indeed become a source of renewal and strength—both personally and collectively. Your vision for the future of the Netherlands as one grounded in resilience and love will no doubt inspire many. This conversation has truly brought the meaning of The Days of Loss to life.”

Princess Catherine Amelia : “Thank you, Tsasi. It’s been a pleasure to share my thoughts, and I hope that this message of transforming grief into love speaks to many hearts.”

Tsasi :
In this closing exchange, the title and theme of The Days of Loss: Grief is Love Unspoken are woven seamlessly into the broader narrative, emphasising how both individuals and nations can transform their grief into strength, hope, and lasting progress. It leaves readers with an uplifting sense of the potential that comes from embracing grief as a powerful form of love.
That’s a beautiful message, Princess Catherine. Thank you for sharing your story and your wisdom with us today. Your perspective on grief offers hope and a way forward for so many who are struggling with loss.

Princess Catherine Amelia: Thank you, Tsasi. I hope my words can provide comfort and inspire others to see that even in the most difficult moments, we can find strength, purpose, and a deeper connection to life itself.
