The Power of Compassion in Journalism

“Compassion is rooted in respect for the inherent dignity of life — our own and others’ — and a desire to see that dignity triumph.”
Serwaa Amihere shares: “A Buddhist friend once told me that true compassion is not sentimentality or pity. It is empowerment — believing in people’s potential and ensuring they have the tools to thrive.”
As a journalist, her mission has always been to inform, educate and uplift. But as she witnessed Ghanaians unknowingly using products made with harmful materials, she realised it was time to do more than just report.
She stepped into advocacy and ethical advertising — determined to ensure that everything we use daily, from what we cook with, clean with, wear or furnish our homes with, is healthy, safe, and of the highest quality.

Serwaa Amihere: Journalism with Integrity. Advocacy with Compassion.
Introduction: A Journalist’s Mission Beyond the News

In a world where information shapes destinies, journalism becomes more than storytelling — it is a force for justice, empowerment, and change. Few embody this better than Serwaa Amihere, a journalist whose compassion extends far beyond broadcasting.
As an advocate for health, transparency, and consumer power, she has spent years informing Ghanaians with truth. But beyond breaking news and hard-hitting interviews, she has committed herself to improving everyday life — ensuring that the products we rely on are safe, ethical, and beneficial.
This Special Edition of Assumpta Weekly explores her mission, featuring Everyday Essentials — a collection of premium Ghanaian products curated for health, beauty, and lifestyle.
From Flora Organic Diapers & Tissues, Sankofa Spices, Tango Soaps, Oh-My-Hair, Officeandcobysa, to Kitea Household Furniture, Serwaa Amihere is connecting Ghana to the world — not only with words, but with action.
Serwaa Amihere: My Journey From Journalism to Purpose-Driven Innovation

After spending years in journalism, I made a bold decision — to challenge myself and achieve something remarkable in advertising and marketing. I began to feel a strong sense of purpose, which made me realise that although I was thriving professionally, my life lacked a deeper mission.
Even though I was doing well in my journalism career, I didn’t have big dreams or a clear direction. I had become too comfortable — and that comfort created a fear of trying new things.
When I stepped into the world of advertising, I was struck by the overwhelming number of foreign products entering Ghana, products we knew very little about — especially in terms of quality and safety. That concern lit a fire in me.
I felt compelled to take action — to use my journalistic skills to stop inferior products from flooding our market.
My solution was to co-found and partner with companies, ensuring that the products we offer Ghanaians come with undeniable proof of quality and integrity.
I deeply believe Ghana’s journey toward true innovation cannot succeed without accurate information. In the past, we didn’t know what these products were made of — which meant we couldn’t trust them. But today, through my new path of innovation and entrepreneurship, I’ve helped make that information available to consumers, companies, and even the government.
With this inspiration came courage — the courage to fight for what once seemed unimaginable.
My dream now is to become one of the leading CEOs in Ghana. Not for the title — but to prove that when we put human happiness and values at the centre of everything we do, we can achieve the unthinkable in every area of life.
(1) Leading With Value – Turning Problems Into Opportunities
True leadership is not about position — it’s about impact. Leading with value means stepping into every space with the intention to uplift, enrich, and improve the lives of others. Instead of running away from problems, visionary leaders face them head-on and see them as opportunities to create solutions. In my journey, every challenge I encountered — from unsafe imported products to lack of consumer education — became a chance to innovate, educate, and build something meaningful for the people of Ghana.
(2) Entrepreneurship Rooted in Integrity
For me, business is not just about profit — it is about purpose. Entrepreneurship rooted in integrity requires honesty, authenticity, and a genuine commitment to doing what is right, even when no one is watching. Every product I co-found or endorse must reflect the values I live by: transparency, safety, and excellence. Building trust with the Ghanaian public is my top priority, because I believe that business without integrity is simply unsustainable. Long-term success is only possible when people know that your word, like your work, is good.
(3) Identifying Gaps & Filling Them with Excellence
Innovation begins with observation. I paid attention to what was missing in our society — whether it was quality diapers for infants, natural spices for our kitchens, durable soaps for our homes, or products that genuinely represented Ghana’s potential. Instead of waiting for others to solve these issues, I chose to become part of the solution. My focus has always been to close these gaps — not with shortcuts or cheap substitutes — but with premium, world-class products that Ghanaians can use with pride and confidence. Excellence is not a luxury; it is a responsibility.:
OVERVIEW – Why Serwaa Amihere Is a True Innovator

Serwaa Amihere’s evolution from celebrated broadcast journalist to purpose-driven entrepreneur has redefined what it means to be an innovator in today’s Ghana.
Unlike traditional entrepreneurs who focus purely on product and profit, Serwaa’s innovation begins with human value — understanding that real change starts when we use our talents to solve the problems others choose to ignore. She is not merely offering products; she is delivering solutions rooted in compassion, integrity, and national pride.
By leading with value and turning everyday problems into opportunities, Serwaa saw gaps in the market — unsafe diapers, questionable everyday essentials, and a lack of trust in product origins — and transformed them into platforms for empowerment. Instead of waiting for change, she became the change.
Her entrepreneurship is deeply rooted in integrity, ensuring that everything she puts her name behind is transparent, ethical, and beneficial to society. At a time when profit often overrides principles, Serwaa proves that integrity is not a weakness in business — it is a winning strategy.
Most importantly, she excels at identifying gaps and filling them with excellence — taking the issues affecting Ghanaian consumers and turning them into opportunities to create premium, home-grown brands that compete on a global scale. By setting new standards for quality and accountability, she inspires not just women, but an entire generation of Africans to dream bigger and demand better.
In a landscape where replication is common, Serwaa Amihere is an innovator because she dares to do things differently — not just for herself, but for the future of Ghana.
Dialogue – Assumpta Weekly Lifestyle & News Magazine
Special Edition: Everyday Essentials

Frema Adunyame:
Good day, distinguished readers across the globe — and welcome to a very special edition of Assumpta Weekly Lifestyle & News Magazine! I’m your host, Frema Adunyame, a Ghanaian broadcast journalist with over two decades of experience in radio and television, best known for my work in shaping impactful conversations on culture, lifestyle, and national development.
Today, I have the honour of sitting down with a woman whose voice, vision, and values have elevated her from the newsroom into the league of powerful African innovators. She is an award-winning journalist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist — a woman driven by purpose and compassion — Serwaa Amihere.
Frema Adunyame:
Serwaa, welcome to the dialogue. You’ve been fondly called “The Innovator”. What’s crucial for you, you once said, was to end the rise of substandard products in Ghana as quickly as possible. You have reported on many of them as a journalist — but this time, you decided to act differently by implementing innovation to check product quality, while also showing compassion by exposing a competition many of us didn’t even know existed in our markets.
Serwaa Amihere, can you tell us more about this?

Serwaa Amihere:
Thank you so much, Frema, and thank you to all our readers around the world for joining us. It’s a real privilege to be here.
To answer your question — yes, what many people don’t realise is that bad products don’t just enter a country — they stay and grow — because we lack sufficient systems to question, test, and reject them. As a journalist, I spent years uncovering these stories. But I reached a point where exposing the problem wasn’t enough — I wanted to be part of the solution. That is what led me into entrepreneurship and innovation.
My mission became simple: use journalistic investigation, data, and consumer advocacy to ensure that anything we call “essential” is actually safe, beneficial, and proudly Ghanaian. That is why I partner with product makers, not to compete — but to raise the standard. I believe we cannot talk about development while our people are unknowingly consuming harmful or low-quality items. Innovation, for me, is not about gadgets — it’s about creating systems that protect people.

Frema Adunyame:
And what a beautiful mission that is.
Welcome once again to Assumpta Weekly Lifestyle & News Magazine – Special Edition: Everyday Essentials — Bringing Ghana’s Finest to the World.
Featuring the outstanding and compassionate broadcast journalist Serwaa Amihere, this edition highlights how she is connecting Ghana to the world through quality everyday products, including:

Radiant. Resilient. Revolutionary.
Serwaa Amihere continues to prove that true innovation begins with character, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the people of Ghana.

Frema Adunyame:
Serwaa, your journey clearly goes far beyond entrepreneurship — it is deeply spiritual, compassionate and people-centred. You’ve said before that “this isn’t only business — it’s a movement.” What does compassion truly mean to you in the context of journalism and entrepreneurship?

Serwaa Amihere:
For me, compassion is power — not a weakness. It’s the courage to look at people and say, “You deserve better.” As journalists, we are trained to investigate, expose and inform — but it reached a point where I felt I needed to do more than just tell stories; I had to become part of the story. People assume entrepreneurship is about making money, but I see it as another form of journalism — I’m still advocating, still protecting the public. The only difference is that now I’m using products as the medium to uplift lives.

Frema Adunyame:
That gives so much meaning to your work with “Everyday Essentials”. You’re not only curating products — you are building trust. Speaking of that, why should readers and consumers worldwide choose products that are curated by Serwaa Amihere?

Serwaa Amihere:
Because every item I put my name on goes through a process of integrity. I don’t choose products just because they are profitable — I choose them because they’re safe, useful, and genuinely enhance people’s lives. From Flora Organic Diapers and Sankofa Spices to furniture, soaps, and haircare — these are everyday essentials that symbolise a better quality of life. I believe Ghanaians — and Africans by extension — deserve world-class products rooted in our values. So when I support a product, I am putting forward something I would confidently use in my own home.

Frema Adunyame:
Beautifully said. This brings us to your powerful call to action: creating a healthier Ghana. Do you believe Ghanaians are ready for this movement — to choose products that prioritise quality over convenience?

Serwaa Amihere:
Absolutely, Frema. I think Ghanaians have always wanted quality. The problem wasn’t desire — it was access. We didn’t always have the information or the options. Now, through this mission, we’re giving people both — and once you know better, you begin to demand better. That’s why I always say: this is not just about selling products; it’s about raising consciousness. When we insist on high standards, we protect our health, grow our economy and build national pride. That is true innovation.

Frema Adunyame:
Powerful. And that is exactly what this Special Edition is all about — awakening that consciousness. Serwaa, your journey is so inspiring. Many people dream of making a difference, but very few actually take that leap. What was the turning point that made you decide to leave journalism and dive into entrepreneurship with such purpose?

Serwaa Amihere: Frema, it was a combination of discomfort and clarity. In journalism, I was thriving professionally, but I started asking myself, “Is this enough? Am I contributing to something bigger?” Then, when I saw the influx of imported products in Ghana — many of which were substandard or unsafe — I realized that I could use my skills to protect people, inform them, and create real impact. That was the spark. I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone and channel my purpose into action.

Frema Adunyame: It’s fascinating how you turned what could have been a problem into an opportunity. Can you tell us more about your philosophy of “leading with value”?

Serwaa Amihere: Absolutely. To me, leadership isn’t about the title or the accolades — it’s about the tangible difference you make in people’s lives. Every challenge I’ve faced, whether it was ensuring product safety or educating consumers, became an opportunity to innovate and create something meaningful. Leading with value means asking, “How can I make this better for others?” and then building solutions around that. It’s about impact, not image.

Frema Adunyame: That’s such a powerful approach. And you mentioned integrity as a cornerstone of your entrepreneurship. How do you ensure that your businesses stay true to that principle?

Serwaa Amihere: Integrity, for me, is non-negotiable. It’s about transparency, honesty, and accountability in everything we do. Every product we co-found or endorse is vetted rigorously — it has to meet the standards I would expect for my own family. Trust is the foundation of long-term success. If people can’t trust your product or your word, nothing else matters.

Frema Adunyame: And you’ve also spoken about identifying gaps in the market. How do you spot these opportunities, and what drives your decision to fill them?

Serwaa Amihere: Innovation begins with observation. I pay attention to the everyday experiences of Ghanaians — what’s missing, what frustrates them, what they need but can’t easily find. From diapers to spices, I’ve asked myself, “How can we offer solutions that are not just adequate, but excellent?” I focus on closing gaps with quality and integrity. Excellence isn’t optional; it’s a responsibility to the people we serve.

Frema Adunyame: It’s incredible how you’ve combined journalism, entrepreneurship, and social impact. Looking forward, what’s your ultimate vision for your journey?

Serwaa Amihere: My dream is to become one of Ghana’s leading CEOs — not for the title, but to show that when we put human happiness and values at the center of business, extraordinary things are possible. I want to inspire a new generation to see problems as opportunities, to lead with integrity, and to innovate for the benefit of our country, not just themselves.

Frema Adunyame: Serwaa, your story is a testament to what courage, integrity, and vision can achieve. Thank you for sharing your journey and showing us what it truly means to innovate with purpose.

Serwaa Amihere: Thank you, Frema. If my story encourages even one person to step out of their comfort zone and make a difference, then I know it’s worth sharing.

Frema Adunyame: Serwaa, it has been such a pleasure having you on the show today. From your journey in journalism to becoming a purpose-driven innovator, you’ve truly shown what it means to lead with courage, integrity, and vision.

Serwaa Amihere: Thank you, Frema. It’s been wonderful to share my story. I hope it inspires others to pursue their purpose and turn challenges into opportunities.
